"Corporal!" The Sergeant's voice broke the few moments of morning silence, and all three of men under his command flinched themselves awake at his shout. "Time?"

The tallest among them lifted up his arm and pushed the sleeve of his jacket back, looking at the worn and dying watch on his wrist.
"My watch says it is six thirty in the morning, sir." He answered, turning a small dial on the side of the watch. "Last night it was about twenty minutes late, and guessing by the rate the battery is--"

"I asked for the time, Jeff, not your watch's life story." The Sergeant growled, impatient for an answer.

"Approximately seven in the morning, sir." Jeff replied, crossing his arms behind his back.

"I'll have to assume we're a bit off schedule then." The Sergeant grunted as he leered at the main entrance of the store they were taking refuge in. Never in his life did the Sergeant think he'd be grateful for Macy's. The sheer size of their store in this mall provided plenty of room for the soldiers, and any survivors who came stumbling through. It also left a lot possible openings too though for the infected to come through. With two large entrances - one in the mall itself and the other leading outside - was troublesome enough, but then there was upstairs level. It had been a few days since he last personally checked all the entrances, and the Sergeant made a mental note to change that.

"Alright men," he turned back to his soldiers, grinning dangerously at them. "You know the drill. Jeff," he pointed at the Corporal then the entrance he had just been staring at, "you're taking watch today of the main entrance. I want you completely focused on the halls. No plotting schemes or thinking of new inventions like last time or else I'm throwing you at the next crying commie I see. Got it?"

Jeff bit down his lower lip, trying to keep himself from frowning at his orders. Him not thinking about plans or improvements was damn near impossible. His mind was always buzzing. So what if he sometimes wrote on the walls when a pen and paper weren't available. At least he was continuing his thoughts!
"Yes sir!" He sighed as he saluted his commanding officer. Once he was nodded off, Jeff left the squad to gather his weapons.

"John!" The Sergeant's finger now went to scarred Specialist, who looked back at him rather dully. "You're with me today. I want to triple check every door, every vent, every single hole in his God forbidden Hell hole and kill every commie in sight, even if they're on the outside."

John rose his eyebrows curiously, "Boom?"

"Not today." The Sergeant's grin widened, as the thought of setting some things off to blow up sounded fun. But he kept his mind focused on the tasks at hand. "Not unless we need to anyway."

The Specialist pouted and moaned in disappointment, before shuffling himself off in the same direction Jeff had gone.

"What am I doing today, sir?" The last and smallest of the men asked, childishly smiling with hope and optimism at his CO.

"Boy, you're getting the most important job of all today." He replied, unable to hold back his sense own joy as the Private lit up even more at his response. "Today you get recon!" The Private's face immediately plummeted into disappointment and dispair.

"Re-Recon?" He repeated, his face becoming a bit pale. "Again? I-I don't think.. I'm not sure about that, sir."

"Ah," The Sergeant waved his arm as he took a few steps to the younger man, "you'll be fine, kid." He wrapped an arm around the trembling boy's shoulders, almost crushing his small frame, and crouched down slightly to be level with him. "I have complete faith in you, Private. Besides, I'm not sending you in alone anyway. That would be suicide!" He squeezed his arm around the boy's shoulders, earning a small groan in pain.

"Who am I going with then, sir?" The Private asked as the Sergeant released his hold around the boy, and he was afraid he already knew the answer to the question. It was always the same...

"That Alan kid from the Devil Dogs." The Sergeant replied happily, to which the Private groaned.

"...What?"

---

"The mighty hunter stalks her prey!" Hanna said aloud as she walked crouched across the ground on her hands and feet, slowly walking up on her "unassuming" older brother who made the mistake of turning his back on her.

"The prey has no idea that it is about to diiiiieeeeee." She continued her mental documentary as she inched closer and closer to her "unsuspecting" victim.

Jackson stared down at the parameter around the Mall from the rooftop through binoculars, silently. He was scanning as to just how far the Zombies were from their location.
He gave a grunt, reaching to his ear and pressing a button.
"North and West sections clear. Save a few shufflers near the Hotel. How's your end, Jugg?"

"Quiet." the man questioned replied.
"I don't see why we don't just go clear out another block."

"Because they just come back, and we just lose ammo." Jackson replied.

"Fine, fine..." Jugg grunted.

"Are you SURE I have to look after the kid?" Wheelman groaned into the communications.

"You're still going on with this?"

"Yes. You have to."

"WHY!?"

"You want D.C. doing it..?"

"......"

"Well..?"

"If I said yes, does that mean I can take the morning off?"

"No."

Ian just gave a sigh, as he sat in a chair, staring down at a book calmly, even though 'impending doom' was nearing him from behind...

"Sir, can't I just go with John today? Or even Jeff?" The Private was pleading as he followed his CO in the weapons cache area, which was originally nothing more than a broom closet prior to the infection outbreak.

"Nope!" The Sergeant answered immediately, leaning into the closet, grabbing both his and the private's weapon of choice. "You know how it is, Private." He held out the boy's battle rifle, who reluctantly took it and frowned. "We all have to take turns budding up with the other boys for the recon missions, and this time its your turn."

"But I always get Alan, sir!" The boy whined, stomping his foot down to add emphasis to his protest. "I end up doing all the work while he lazes around, and if any.. Any... Any..." He began to stammer, trying to hold back horrific memories of the creatures he witnessed at military base.

"Private," The Sergeant sighed and placed a hand on the boy's shoulder. "James, you'll be fine, kid. You've handled yourself before just fine against the commies, alone to boot." As James looked up at him, he forced a smile. "Think of him as bait if things really get bad."

James looked at the commanding officer with a puzzled expression. "Shouldn't I try to work with him instead of feeding him off?" He asked as the Sergeant forced him to turn around and gave him a gentle push forward.

"Eh, he will be missed. Now get moving! If you're late for meeting up with the lazy sack of s**t I'll make you run laps."

---

"The might hunter prepares for the pounce." On cue, the child sucked up her legs closer to her chest, getting in stance for an on the spot long jump. And for a few moments, she was quiet.

Suddenly, she yelled out as she lunged forward toward her brother, fingers out and extended so her claws would be ready to dig into flesh.

Wheelman gave a grumble, waiting near the Stryker for the Private to show up.
"This better get done with soon. I have too much lazing about to do to be working!" he whined aloud.

Two beeps were heard on Tom's radio.
"This is Jackson. All clear on the outside. The recon can go out at any time." he said into the radio.

"You sure the kid's up for it? He looks rather shaky with the zombies."

--

Ian nonchalantly leaned to the right to avoid the lunging predator, still transfixed into the book he was reading.

It had been clear he had been waiting, as in his sister's path was a pile of stuffed animals to land in.

As James went to the outside exit of the store, Tom sighed in worry for the young soldier. The kid had faced a traumatic event all by himself just barely a week ago, and Tom was admittedly impress how well he was handling it. Sure, the kid got the shakes every time he thought of the infected, but at least James stopped begging to have his rifle every time that happened.

The radio on his hip beeped, surprising Tom out of his thoughts. With a slight groan of annoyance, he grabbed the radio and pressed his thumb down to active it, "Great. The Private is heading out now to rendezvous with Alan." He replied as John approached him, lifting up his rifle slightly to show he was ready to begin. Tom nodded and took point, heading for the stairs.

"And the kid will be fine." He answered confidently, but Tom felt the same doubts. He couldn't allow such weakness to show though as the commanding officer though. "He.. He had a pretty rough intro to this fiasco when we found him." Biggest understatement of the year. Tom snorted at the twisted humor. "He's a capable solider though. James isn't afraid to shoot down some commies. He'll be fine."

James let out a defeated sigh when he saw Alan had - somehow - beat him at the meeting point. Please don't tell Tom.. He mentally pleaded the other soldier as he approached, frowning with worry and his usual disappointment with being partnered with the laziest man in all of existence.

"We have to do this every morning, no matter how long it takes," James told him, as he always did every single morning. Before a reply could be given, James had begun walking down the patrol route, taking point - like always. It was the only way he learned to get Alan moving, or else they'd spend all morning arguing about his damn laziness and take even longer to do a simple recon.

---

As she flew by her brother Hanna let out a disappointed whine. How could I have missed? He was right in front of me! When she landed in the pile of soft toys, a few flew up into the air upon impact.

"Ian!" Hanna whined, quickly turning herself around and sending a few more stuffed animals into flight as she flailed about. "Ian, you moved! You're not suppose to move." In anger, she grabbed an elephant and threw it at her brother's head. "You cheated!"

PostPosted: Fri Sep 14, 2012 2:07 pm
"Hope you're right." Jackson replied through the radio.
"Would hate to lose another good soldier." he added, before a pause came over the communications.

"I'm sending D.C. over to give you and John another pair of hands....It's best his aren't idle..."

Wheelman just gave a groan, following after James.
"It's still bullshit I have to walk around instead of drive!" he whined.

"We siphoned all the fuel within a few hundred miles, so it's not like we're running on fumes!"

--

Ian didn't even move when the toy was thrown, which bounced off of his head, making a squeak on impact, and when it hit the ground.
"Didn't know prey couldn't move. Must not have read that in National Geographic..."

"I have complete faith in my Private!" Tom answered defensively, glaring down at his radio as if it were Jackson in his hand instead. "You should too.

"And are you sure about sending your explosive expert?" He asked, looking warily at John, who was grinning ear to ear. Tom briefly shuddered, knowing nothing good laid behind the Specialist's toothy smile. "I already have my own bomb nut coming with me, I don't need a second."

James let out an irritated sigh in response to the whiny voice. He was normally a loving and calm sort of person and got easily with others. Alan though was somehow impossible for James to like or get along with for very long, especially when they were on duty.

Every single time the guy had to complain about EVERYTHING.

"It is still a waste of fuel." James answered through clenched teeth as he struggled to keep face, and not unleash his darker words and thoughts upon Alan. "We have to conserve our supplies in case of an emergency, not waste it away so you can continue to grow fat." James stole a glance back at Alan, and snorted lightly.

"And you could use some exercise."

---

"You know I can't move, Ian." Hanna whined, grabbing another stuffed animal to cuddle with as she slumped into the pile of toys. Predators were suppose to be toughest thing in their world, always watching the prey and winning another meal. Hanna always pretended she some large cat - a lioness or tiger, depending on her mood - while Ian was always a silly little and helpless frog. A one sided match in nature. Yet she could barely manage to even touch her brother whenever she played animals with him.

"...Ian," she mumbled his name as she buried her face into the stuffed animal in her arms, "when are we stop being animals?"

PostPosted: Fri Sep 14, 2012 8:24 pm
"Already here." D.C. told Tom, now behind him, and quickly passing a small box to John.

"He doesn't want me to help fix the broken barricades." he added, crossing his arms.

"Yeah? And you need to grow some and get taller. Neither are happening, so I'm not gonna bother with effort here." Wheelman grunted, rolling his eyes.

Afterward, he began to stare at a particular building near the Mall, which seemed to have sounds coming from the inside.
"...Looks like we have company.."

--

Ian rolled his eyes at the whole 'not moving' bit. If prey wants to live, it has to move fast. But, he did not feel like arguing with his sister right now.

He rose an eyebrow, listening to her question.
"What do you mean? We're not animals."

"What the?" Tom quickly spun himself around, shocked and surprised that Dexter had managed to sneak up on him without causing alarm. "How did you--? When did you--?" At a loss for words, Tom was almost speechless at the small box given to him, which was immediately taken from his hands by John.

The Specialist was grinning dangerously at the box, as many theories and wonders ran through his head of what it could have possibly been. All of thoughts were related to a bomb, of course, but all the different hows and sets up ran through his head, and made John very excited.

"Boom?" He asked hopefully, shaking the box frantically.

"DON'T SHAKE IT!" Tom immediately snatched the box away from John, who whined and pouted in response. "Here!" The gift was given back to Dexter, along with a glare from Tom. "What the Hell is in that thing?"

"I'm not that short!" James protested with a childish whine, giving Alan the meanest glare he could make (which was rather pathetic compared to most other peoples' looks). He continued to retaliate, "and Tom says its not the size of the soldier, its the amount of damage that he does against the enemy that counts!" From all his fussing, James hadn't heard anything out of the ordinary, and looked at Alan skeptically, and a bit hurtfully.

"You're not even listening to me?" He looked at the building that had Alan's attention, then back at the other soldier. "Its just a toy store. There's nothing important in there."

---

"We're not human." Hanna pointed out with a heavy sigh, looking sadly up at her older brother. "If we're not human or animals, what are we?"
PostPosted: Sat Sep 15, 2012 12:44 pm
"It's a new problem solver." D.C. replied simply.
"Yeaaah. Jackson didn't like the last one...Or the one before that..... Probably won't like this one too, so I didn't tell him about it yet." he added, tilting his head in a different direction with each part.

He then looked to John.
"Not boom. Boooooooooooooooooooooom."

"Yeah, yeah. d**k analogies all around. I heard movement. Buuuut, if you want to walk away and back to the Mall.....Fine by me!" Wheelman grunted, looking around some more.
"Oh hey, look. A DQ stand........Now I want ice cream."

--

"Tell you what, Hanna." Ian said, closing the book and standing up, walking over to his sister afterwards.
"When I come up with an answer, I'll tell you my findings. Until then, how about we just be superheros, huh?" he asked her, grinning.

Erissa sat quietly in the DQ and kept still, as she thought of what to do now. Ironically, her lab had been close to this mall so she had been trying to get in for a few months since It was the closest thing to shelter around here. She didn't need much food, and she had plenty of water, the only problem was the lurking zombies. She couldn't get deeper unless she wanted to get mauled or have a few limbs ripped off. She sighed again, "should I try and make a run for it?" she whispered to herself. She continued to sit down, deep in thought and her eyes kept lighting up. She knew their were common zombies everywhere, crawling around looking for blood. She couldn't move around and she hoped there were people who weren't infected. She just needed to find them and she knew that if anyone was smart enough, they would seek shelter here since there are stores with great access to defend against any attacks or house multiple uninfected individuals. She noticed something in the distance over by a Macy's store. She tilted her head curiously and she decided that when it was at least safer to move, that's where she'd check first.

"Oh great..." Tom groaned as his worries and suspicions were confirmed. This was exactly what he didn't need - two bomb nuts working to secure their little store.

"Jackson, Dexter made another..." He paused and looked down at the box he forced back into Dexter's hands, regretting the decision to give it back so quickly. He would have taken it back by now, but he was afraid the damn thing was sensitive and would set to go off, if it already wasn't set by John's shaking. "...Problem solver."

John was grinning dangerously at the box Dexter was holding now. It had been three days since something was sent to blow in this Hell hole. THREE DAYS. He was getting a little uneasy, especially since Tom and Jackson were strictly controlling anything and everything that could be manipulated to blow. It was almost depressing.

"Hey," he nudged his bomb nut buddy with the butt of Jeff's rifle, his grin never leaving. "Shall we?"

"What the? What?" James was at a loss for words to respond o Alan. Either the lazy a** hadn't been listening to him, or... No, he must have not been listening, which took a blow at James' self esteem. Everyone was always treating him like a child.

"Are you even listening to me?" He asked with a whine, "or are you too focused on ice cream again?"

---

"Superheroes?" Hanna immediately lit up, lifting her face out of the stuffed animal she had been hiding behind. "I want to be a superhero! Please, please, please, please, please!" She began to bounce in the remaining pile of toys, squeezing the one in her arms even harder. "What's my superhero name? I got to have a really cool name!"

While there was a pause on the radio, D.C. nodded, leading John away from Tom.

"Oh son of a.....TOM. WHATEVER YOU DO, LISTEN TO WHAT I AM ABOUT TO SAY." Jugg yelled into the radio.

"DO. NOT. LET. THEM. OUT. OF. YOUR. SIGHT."

"Yeah, yeah. I'm listening. It's whether or not you are." Wheelman grunted.
"Either check out the DQ or the damn Toy Store. Your call."

--

Ian gave a smirk. This is what he kept pressing on for. His sister's happiness.

"How about we come up with your name together?" he asked Hanna with a chuckle.
"It's always better if you have a say in it, too."

PostPosted: Mon Sep 17, 2012 6:49 pm
"They're not getting anywhere," John motioned his index and middle fingers to his eyes, then pointed them at Dexter as he started to move away.

"And must you really yell at me?" He asked, looking at the radio as if it were Jack instead. "I know you lack control on your voice volume, but God damn. A voice like that could startle a crying commie from a mile away!"

John tilted his head to the side and stared at Dexter for a moment, then his Sergeant. The CO motioned he would be watching them, which John groaned in defeat and protest. He looked back at his bomb nut buddy, and shrugged his shoulders, frowning.

"Nuh uh," he shook his head then nodded it back at Tom. "Watching us."

"If you go the Dairy Queen, you might end up eating all of the ice cream." James sighed in defeat, deciding it was best to give up the previous conversation and just move on with whatever had Alan's attention. It was amazing itself the lazy man had noticed anything.

Then again it was ice cream...

"Try not to get distracted in the toy store." James warned before departing off to the Dairy Queen.

---

"What about...." Hanna's voice trailed off, her eyes darting across the store as she looked for inspiration for her name. Her mind was going berserk with ideas and combinations of the old posters, ads, and toys danced in front of her eyes. It was almost too much for her.

"Uh," she looked around a bit more desperately, before she finally settled with looking at Ian for help. "I can't think of anything! There's too many names to choose from." She whined, shaking the toy in her hands in frustration.

Erissa kept her eye out for any movement that could be seen. She noticed a few common zombies lurking around and they seemed very interested with the toy store. 'weird, almost like they want to play... and I don't think they want the toys to play with...' she thought, sighing. She looked around a few more times and she noticed more movement near the Macy's, 'I wonder... is there maybe survivors over there?' she thought. She held her gun firmly in her hand and reloaded her gun. She then gripped it tightly and simply waited, listening for the right time to make a run for it.
