Marius sighed softly. There was one line that always stuck with him from a book. "We're all freaks, just some of us are more obvious than others," he murmured, thoughtful.

Alia looked back at where she had left him, feeling a strong pull to go back to him. She felt unsure of what she should do. She felt like she should be with him, but he was a human and was a mermaid. She was bound to the sea like he was bound to land, there was nothing that could be done.

Marius shifted, his gaze flicking toward the small castle on top of the cliff. His 'parents' asked him why he always went out into the ocean, and he rarely answered with something that seemed to satisfy them, partially because he wasn't really sure why he went himself. I just feel free in the ocean, that's the main reason, though I have no idea why, he thought as he stood, then leaped off the rock into the water.

Alia looked back at where he was again, she wanted to be a part of his world, but she didn't know what she would do. She swam up close to him again, her eyes still looking over his markings. She sighed, "I wish I could have legs and join you on land...but..." she sighed again and then she turned around to swim away

Marius saw what the girl really was for the first time. "I know something of that," he murmured, holding his breath. "I wish I knew why the ocean calls to me so," he murmured. He felt out of place on land and especially in the castle, yet here... in the ocean, he felt at peace.

Alia blushed looking away from him for a moment, "I should go. You have to return to your world up here..." she then dived back under the water again and this time, really swimming away from him. She knew that she should just forget about the land above, and stay in the sea where she belonged. But, she longed to be up there and free of the world she lived in. She knew that nothing could help her. Her Father already forbid her to do anything that had to do with living on land. She knew that he would lose it if he discovered the things she had gotten from when people of the surface dropped things in the ocean. She didn't know what most of them were, but they made her feel connected to up there.

Marius sighed, a streamer of bubbles escaping his lungs. He knew she was right, yet... he couldn't explain his connection to the ocean, even to himself. I know she's right, and I can't stay under forever, yet I want to see what secrets the ocean hides so badly I can't really think of anything else, he thought as he lightly pushed off the side of the rock, heading toward the surface and shore, though he knew all too well what waited for him. They're gonna chew me out over what happened to Carmen even when I've told her over and over to be in something less.... restrictive, he thought, knowing his thoughts were more grumbling than anything.

Alia sighed as she continued to swim home to Coralia. She really didn't want to go back right away, since she knew that her Father was just waiting for her to come home so he could discipline her. She swam towards her hiding place, a small cave where she hid her treasures. She went in and sat down on one of the rocks there. "I know Father has found another suitor by now...why can't he understand that I don't want to be married yet."

Marius walked up the cliffside path toward the gates of the castle, rolling his eyes at the guards, who shook their heads as if bored. They likely saw what happened, though I doubt they'll call witnesses in; I'm certain they're just gonna chew me out because their 'precious' princess was too damn stupid to listen, he thought. He was right. A short time later, he was half lying, half sitting on one of the windowsills in his chamber, sighing. "They claim I am related to them through a prince that died some time ago, though his daughter vanished," he muttered. He clenched one hand, thinking. The rumors were that the prince's wife had once been a 'mermaid princess' and part of the ocean. If that's true, and I am related to those people they talk about... it would explain my connection to the sea, he thought.

Alia sighed as she looked through some of the items she had gathered. She sighed, she wished that could be like the mermaid she heard about in Atlantica, who was able to go on land and be with the one person she was destined to be with. Coralia was not that far off from Atlantica, but the people there had been at war for so long. Alia just wished that they would stop already. Trident had claimed that the people of Coralia had stolen his granddaughter, but that wasn't true. Alia would have known if that had happened. Her Father had been trying to reason with him, but, the merman wasn't good with talking to others. She sighed again and looked up, "Ariel...what should I do...? I know that you wouldn't let this happen...but, what can I do to help? How can I make my dreams come true like you did?"

Marius shifted, pulling out what seemed to be the head of a trident, though it was made of some kind of clear crystal that held an odd ethereal glow. It was the only thing he had of his past before being adopted. He remembered something he had found in a crevice and pulled out a dirty, stained shell that looked oddly like a necklace, though it fit perfectly in his palm. He flicked the catch as the pale glow formed an odd spiraling palace of gold; the entire miniature scene wavered as if underwater. "Melody," he mumbled, thinking of the name inscribed on the bottom of the shell. Why does that name sound familiar? he thought. He glanced at the crystalline trident head and blinked. It's never reacted like that before, he thought, staring at the soft golden glow coming from the small keepsake.

Alia sighed again before laying back on the rock. She swam around for a while in the cave, "Ariel, I wish you were here to stop your Father...but...no one here will stand up to him and get him to stop. I'm the Princess of Coralia...but, that doesn't mean anything to me. My Father wants me to marry someone of strength, or someone of Atlantica to stop the war, but...I want to marry the one I love like you did. Ariel...please, tell me what I can do to stop this, this war...I'd give up anything just to be happy."

Marius cocked his head as he stared at the crystal trident. He felt a strong compulsion to leap into the sea holding both the necklace and the trident. He took off his nightclothes and put his shorts on, sliding a belt over his shoulder and letting the pouch hang by his side, which to him felt natural. He placed both items into the pouch and slipped out of the window, barefoot. He quickly slid down a rope he kept in a small niche for just such an occasion, glancing upward. "Not like you'd understand or care about my past... or about me," he muttered as he turned away, slippng into the waves, unaware something else was watching him as well. He didn't notice the sharkfin cresting the water or the large shark that followed. He had no idea the shark watching him was once a cohort to a certain thin multilimbed sorceress, but now had a new mistress.

Marius glanced around, taking a deep breath before he slipped under the surface of the water, pulling out first the necklace, then the crystalline trident. Both ignited in a clear golden glow as the soft music of the necklace played in the water.

Alia paused as she heard music playing through the water. She then swam through the water and began to head towards where the sound was coming from. She knew that song, she knew that she did. She then came upon him and saw him in the water again. She approached him cautiously, "You..." she looked at what was in his hands, "W-Where did you get those?"

"The trident is basically the only link I have to my past, which to me is a blank and those royal pain in the arses up topside aren't about to say anything to me if they can avoid it," he murmured. "The necklace I found in a muddy crevice with an eel in it; I coaxed the eel out with a sardine from the market and snagged the necklace... it feels familiar... as if I should know it... and the name on the bottom... 'Melody'.... I've heard it somewhere before," he said softly. He saw her eyes widen as if shocked at the name. He remembered several years before when the royals had adopted him the 'doctor' had said he had amnesia from a likely head injury.
