Fiendsworth
sunran
I will give you, Fiendsworth, a lesson in presentation!

Ah, well. This is a discussion for another time and another thread, although by "another time," I mean "never," and by, "another thread," I mean... uh... "never."

Give me a break, I just got back from a big party.

1. I'll discuss YOU! *shakes fist* I should make sure that this thread is discussed regularly, in fact....

2. I *know* you just got back from a big party, because I do believe I drove you home from it xp I also believe i was with you at it, and I'm certain that you bought me breakfast/lunch.

3. My post wasn't meant to be for when you got back from said party; I think I posted it a few days ago...

Wow.

o.O

Talk about this thread being the 'Convention for Grammar and Punctuation Whores and Pimps'! And as a simple add-on to this entire gathering of suggestions, there is Dictionary.com that has a dictionary and thesaurus on it for the pleasure of mistake correction.

Ok, I will definitly agree on l33t that's just rediculous, if you intend for people to understand you then there are letters on a keyboard for a reason, but I would like to add that guilds are supposed to be fun and conversational! People need to feel comfortable typing and the way this sticky is presented is intimidating! So people don't capitalize their I's, so they miss spell a couple of words, does that mean they shouldn't post? When your holding a conversation with someone in real life are you at all concerned with your grammer? Maybe if it's a glaring mistake like "I is at the movies with yous sister", but you don't have someone edit your conversation. I know I'm a noob in this guild so it's a little presumptuous of me to say anything but when I first read your post it was scarey and scarey doesn't attract new members! I was afraid if I slipped up someone was going to come after me, delete my post and berate me. My point being maybe there's a nicer way to say all of this and maybe the guildlines are a bit harsh. I for one can still tell what people are triing to say without capitalization and as long as people sound out what they're triing to spell I can still understand miss spelled words. This is a guild not an english essay, so smile and relax!

I do agree that guilds are supposed to be fun, but I still think that there needs to be a standard for communicating. Mostly I feel this way because of the nature of this guild. It's for giving artistic advice, and when you are doing something like that it is important to be as clear as possible.

If the thought of having to use proper grammer and such scares people away, I'm sorry. However, I'd rather have less people and more readable on topic posts than a whole slew of members I can't understand.

I mean, take a message like this;

"1 4/\/\ 700kin t4 ge7 5u/\/\ h7p 4 ma dr4\/\/nz. P7z h7p me1"

Terrible. Even a message like this;

"i wan u 2 look @ my drawnz lol." makes my eyes bleed.

We're not asking for you to be perfect. We're just asking that you try. Everyone in this guild is intelligent and capable of typing decently well. I don't mind spelling mistakes. Heck, I make them all the time. Just keep them to a minimum. As for capitalization, I don't think there is an excuse to skimp on that. We all know where the 'shift' key is and I'd be happy to help anyone who needs to learn how to use it.

I'd never hold it against you if you can't spell 'ostentatious' or a big ol' word like that. I won't begrudge you some slang. I'm even happy if you capitalize at least u of the time. That being said, if we ease up on our rules, where would it stop? We can define good grammar, punctuation, etc, but if we said something like 'okay grammar' or 'mediocre grammar'. It's a little harder to let people know just what we expect from them.

Just do your best. A slip-up is just that, I'm sure it won't be held against you. If you're unsure about something grammar-wise, just post in this thread and someone will help you fix it.

I have my own rule of grammar, aside from those listed here of course:

Never use a big word when a diminutive one will suffice.

Wow......that was a bit weird........Ok, "I" am not going to say anything mean","but some people just enjoy reading posts when "they're" not grammatically correct. Does anyone else really care if "I" is not capitalized?
PostPosted: Sun Sep 05, 2004 6:13 pm

Yes. Yes I do. I like the thought of at least one place on the internet where I can read something legible. It's not like it's hard! Hit the little shift key, take five seconds to go over you post before you hit 'submit'. I don't think it's too much to ask. Our society is growing so lazy. People think that asking the least bit of effort from them is a huge insult. If the rules anger you so much, why did you join when they're posted clearly?

I agree with you on the correct grammar thing but give the other people a break. I mean some people can make mistakes sometimes (especially when capitolizing i) or when you slip and make an error like accidently typing g instead of h for 'hey'. So lighten up on the correct grammar just a little bit please? Because when you're typing there can be mistakes and you might not know it.

You should understand that Fiend is not an angry blood hound who will rip your throat out for a mistake. The point of the grammer list is to allow people to read the guild's threads without over exerting themselves to find out what people are trying to say. Mistakes happen, but that's not what this is about, this is about abusing the threads and typing incoherently simply because you don't want to put any effort into your typing or you're just a jerk.

So I say to all you, chill. stare

Maeth knows what's what, folks. Listen to the wise one.

To all of you who posted "Oh my God, don't be so cruel to the newbies, you horrible, evil man," I would like to say something profound and meaningful.

A guideline is not a rule.

I posted this guide to grammar in order to properly communicate the simple fact that badly written posts are what make the Internet suck. If you make sucky posts, you are building a sucky Internet, and I hate you so much.

I will not be a Nazi about a few "i's" or the occasional "hay guys." I will not try to crucify your family if you post, "I went to this concert one time man it was cool." However, I will ban the crap out of you if you constantly post illegible garbage with no intention of improving it at all.

My duty as a moderator of this guild is to maintain a happy, efficient, intelligent, and friendly atmosphere. I might not be terribly good at the whole "friendly" thing, but by Zeus, I will battle stupidity and laziness wherever it rears its ugly head.

Does that clarify things? I might rant a bit here and there, but I'm really a gentle and harmless creature who will only destroy someone's pitiful and meaningless existence if I recieve complaints about that person generally being a moron.

Ignore me, Fiendsworth, I just had to give the 1337 talk a try. Haven't typed incoherantly for three years, and I am beginning to miss it thanks to this thread.
