the names for each country are chosen by naoko, no by the companies.
it's interesting all that you say, i'd like the original names, i don't know why they change them.

I f Naoko chose the names, fine then, but the translations need not call her bunny in one page, usagi in another and serena in another... it is very confusing!

michiru kaioh is ... sea king. I don't really know what michiru means. I will have to check my japanese dictionary
haruka= I have no idea and tenou is sky king

Michiru means to be full/complete, to rise (tide), or to mature. A rough translation of her name could be "complete sea king".

Haruka means distant, and her name translates to "distant sky king".

You've missed an important part.

Tsukino-
Tsuki means moon in japanese.

Serenity and Selenity are the same in Japanese because there, they pronounce Rs and Ls the same. xp

I'm not surprised they went into some detail with the dub names; however, I wish they hadn't been changed at all.

I grew up with the dub and it's only now I have a chance to watch the subbed version; and I realise how much better it would have been with the original names.

Ah well, c'est la vie.

ACTUALLY you got some of the english name meanings wrong.

Amara comes from the latin verb amare, meaning "To love".

Serena is the name Selene (Macedonian moon goddess) prounounced with a Japanese accent.

I got it all from Behind the name site. << Though each name has different meanings in different parts of the world if you think about it.

*and some of the names I got from different sites.*

Also, Serena -can- be known as 'Serene' which means Calm as it is also a variation of the name.

i'm sure everyone knows this already, but the names in japanese are puns that supposedly have something to do with the senshi's element... But what does Haruka have do with the sky? her powers involve the earth
