Boats. Siddie stared dismally at the little rowboat, remembering how many of the little boat models in class had sunk so easily. These, at least, were real boats. They'd hold up. ... Right?

She climbed awkwardly into the boat, settled herself, smoothed her skirt down, and took hold of the oars. If she rowed evenly, the boat should go straight, right? Theoretically, anyway. ... It seemed to be working. So far, anyway.

Unfortunately, taking a nice, straight, even course wasn't actually a good idea, Siddie discovered. There was a net lurking just under the surface, and the boat came to an abrupt stop. She picked herself up out of the bottom of the boat, peered over the side, and carefully untangled the oars. She could use them to shove the net off.

... Was that a little puddle of water in the bottom of the boat? Oh dear.

It took some shoving and pushing, plus some leaning precariously over the side of the boat and untangling the net and getting her sleeves wet, and some very impolite words before the boat was free of the net. But Siddie was pretty sure she'd done it without cracking anything, either on the boat or on herself. It was a good thing they weren't being timed.

... They weren't being timed, right?

Siddie made sure to glance over her shoulder regularly as she rowed, checking for traps. She wasn't going to get caught again because she wasn't looking. If she got caught anyway, it wouldn't be out of carelessness. She seemed to be making progress again, but she wasn't going to congratulate herself just yet.

Siddie noticed quite suddenly that while she was rowing steadily, the boat wasn't actually going anywhere. She paused, puzzled, and peeked over the side - just in time to see a bright orange tentacle come shooting up out of the water, right at her. She shrieked, and nearly fell overboard in her scramble to get away. Unconcerned, the tentacle simply wrapped itself over the side of the boat.

The boat's hull creaked ominously. Several more tentacles slopped over the sides.

Moure was just entering the classroom when he saw Edel's bright blue hair on the other side of the classroom. As he made his way to the edge, he found himself grinning at her success. Then another thought occured to him, namely that Edel was here and thus if he messed up, she'd see it. He swallowed slightly at that, not sure what to worry more about if he started failing; Edel watching or the actual test.

In any case, he moved to one of the boats, giving it a nudge with his foot. What that thing really supposed to support him the entire time? While kind of doubting that, he finally took a seat in one that looked more or less stable.

Finally, he shoved off and started rowing.

What was this 'exam' supposed to be testing, again?

And then he heard the ominous music as something started to circle his boat-- was that a shark fin?!

Moure stared at the shark fin for a few moments. And then started rowing as much as he could without drawing the shark's attention. Why it wanted to eat something that's been long dead, Moure did not know. All he knew is he didn't want to get eaten.

The music playing from no where really wasn't helping the situation, either.

The shark seemed to lose interest after a moment though, which was good. Definitely good. Moure continued rowing, taking cautious looks around as he did so and hoping for the best.

Shark and ominous music avoided, Moure continued to row his wooden craft. He was on the look out for them now. At least he knew that there were creatures lurking down in that dark water. He wasn't sure how many, or what kinds besides sharks, but they were down there. How had the teacher even gotten the sharks and things here, in the first place?

Moure shook his head slightly, focusing on the challenge once again. Right. Row the boat across the classroom. With that mission set in his head, he continued to row, perhaps a bit harder than before too.

Except he didn't seem to be going too far. With a frown, he turned around in his seat. His mouth fell open as he saw what was holding him back.

Tentacles of something were slowly winding their way around the back of his boat.

Moure's expression was not one of amusement as he took one paddle and slowly started pushing at the tentacles with it. When they wiggled a bit, he took the chance to shove the oar at the curling thing, hoping to push it off his craft. Go away, tentacle thing, go, shoo.

The appendages gave a little writhe before releasing the boat and disappearing back into the water. Moure gave an inward sigh of relief, and returned to rowing the boat.

Moure, now wary also of tentacled sea creatures AND sharks (maybe the sharks have tentacles? WHAT IS THIS?) , continued to paddle. He looked to the areas around him carefully, trying to keep his boat moving toward the other side of the classroom. He'd had no luck so far in this endeavor, but perhaps he'd break that streak now.

Or not. The shark seemed to have noticed him again. The patchwork was not amused.

Time to try slinking away from the shark. Moure moved his oars slowly, waiting for an opportunity to bolt away from the thing that was following him. After a few seconds, he sped forward, hoping to outrun the shark and get it to leave him alone.

The shark lost interest in him after he paddled away, and Moure gave a sigh of relief before continuing on his exam.

Siddie pulled one of the oars out of its spot and whacked at the tentacles frantically. They withdrew, reluctantly, but she heard an unpleasant splintery crack. While she couldn't see what, exactly, had broken, it was obvious that that was Not Good.

When the tentacles had all been beaten back, she turned and found that they had stolen her second oar while she was beating the ones on the other side. Only the relative fragility of the boat kept her fron kicking at the wood in frustration.

It was much harder to paddle a straight course with only one oar. Siddie tried, valiantly, but soon enough she found herself drifting towards another boat, paddled by a zombie boil. ... What was that music that had suddenly started up?

Something bumped the bottom of the boat, and she looked around to see the backfins of an alarming number of sharks gliding smoothly through the water, circling both boats. Oh, no.

Siddie whacked at the water with her oar, hoping to scare the sharks away. Sadly, her attempt had the opposite effect; several of the fins broke out of their circle and came slicing straight towards her boat. She eeped and pulled the oar back hastily. The fins submerged, but a moment later a series of heavy bumps rocked the boat violently.

The water was definitely seeping in more rapidly now. She hoped that she wasn't going to sink, because, well, sharks. At least the bumping had made her boat drift away, the circle deforming briefly around it until she was out. "Sorry," she called back to the zombie, guiltily. "Good luck!"

So far, Moure had managed to flounder around at the starting area for quite some time, but now, now he was determined. He had a goal, a reason to get to the other side. Actually three reasons.

One was blue, one was to get away from this shark, and the last was to not fail.

Good motivation, if there ever was one.

Except apparently Moure's friend the stalker-shark decided it'd be nice to to have him meet the other person attempting this exam. Oh, and he brought friends. How lovely. Moure simply paused for a moment, looking over the sharks with a frown, before starting to slowly paddle away again. There was an unfortunate sound as the shark cracked against the back of his boat, jostling it before abandoning him.
