I thought it was supposed to be a secret to everybody...

In all seriousness, a book was not needed. It added authenticity to the world, yeah, but really, who honestly gives a s**t about the time line besides the most hardcore of Zelda fans?

Just play the game, dammit. When it took place doesn't matter.

I think it's strange that The Minish Cap and Four Swords are on the timeline at all.

And yeah, the failing part is weird.

It's only a matter of time before the book is thoroughly translated and posted online, so maybe then it'll clear some things up.

I'm not committing to anything unless I see the book myself and if I have Nintendo's official confirmation.

Also, I'm with Kuzo and Fish on the whole "Link Fails" timeline being stupid.

The Link fails section does make sense if you really think about it. In all of the games under that branch a hero defeating Ganon is never mentioned.
