Brian rolled his eyes as he entered the office, he had gotten that nice pay off from the Kraut but now he would have to see that damn lady who called it in. As he entered he saw she was sitting at the reception desk and he gave her a smile as he walked past her like she was nothing. Considering his father's 'war record' in this department she would find it hard to get him in trouble no matter what. As he passed the secueity gate he stopped and looked at the new face. "Who the hell are you?" He asked the man with the eye patch. He could not be a suspect or he would have the cuffs on, and Brian did not recognize him as any of the officers he new from the city.

"Oh hey Sheila, did my wife call for me? She's supposed to when she gets back from the doctor's," Sam said as he entered the building removing his hat. He flicked it a few times to try and get the rain off of it. "Hope you guys brought your coats, it just started coming down. I swear, just when I think I know this city it goes and becomes unpredictable again." Sam chuckled and put his hat back on. He noticed Brian in his usual tough guy mode giving the new guy some trouble. "Oh ease up Brian, he's probably just new to the department. Hey there friend, coffee is just in the break room. It's through those doors and to the left."

Sheila smiled at Sam. He was one of the few people she could think of that almost always had a smile on his face, but today he had even more reason. "Your wife is healthy.." She said as she looked through her note to find the message she took down. As she handed it to him she added. "And it would seem congratulations are in order. How many is that now Sam?" She asked even though she knew she might never hear the end of it.

"Heh," Sam rolled his toes bashfully, "it's two now. Maria's getting big though, they do grow fast." He walked up and leaned on the desk, getting out his wallet he pulled a crisp and clean photo out. "This was taken on her last birthday, when she turned eleven. It's a thing my wife and I do every year. Almost time to take a picture of her again. My little angel. You know she's one of the brightest in her class? Nothing like her dad, she gets that from her mom." Sam chuckled again.

Closing his eyes and squeezing the bridge of her nose he huffed. Why did she have to ask him about his family? Deciding to cut it off quick he smiled over at Sheila and Sam. "Oh, we know she could not have gotten the brains from you. Or do you just not know about Sheila's not the friendly type." As he turned to get his coffee he added. "So how long before she is a swinging flapper at a speak easy?" His tone was playful enough and he just wanted to see the reaction he would get. This was Brian's way he always had to know just how much he could push a person before they snapped, and what buttons would make them go off.

"Long after we become old men and you'll have nothing to do with her Brian," Sam laughed as he straightened up and put the picture back and put his wallet away. "Well, I'm not sure about the rest of you, but I need a cup of joe. It's going to be a long day if Brian is in." As he walked for the door and opened it slightly he turned. "Anyone else want one? How about you Sheila? Or maybe the new guy? I know Brian's going to need all the coffee he can get."

"No thank-you I only drink tea." Sheila said as she returned to her desk. Back to her desk and back to typing up the transcripts from interviews, confessions and crime reports. Or better yet the chicken scratch, scrawled notes from the guys walking beat2 around Chicago.

"Oi, boyo, I'm patches Mchoulihan, and ye jest crossed da wrong madderfooker."
White waited a beat, and then grinned wide and extended his hand in greeting.
"Hello, son. I'm Agent Silas White, here to facilitate some business with the heads of our enemies and the business end of a .30-06. Nice to meet you."
White nodded to the secretary and the other officers briskly.

"So, you one of Hoover's boys?" He asked extending a hand to White. This was indeed unusual and he wondered how much he already knew. Hopefully it would not be too difficult to find out and if he was an undercover agent that information could be worth a lot of money to him.

White glanced cautiously at the man.
Something about him seemed a bit off. White would need to manage this carefully.
"I've met Hoover, yes. I don't report directly to him, and have very little Agency experience. Most of my expertise comes from lessons learned in the Belleau woods and at Soissons. My skill set is putting bullets into anything the command deems an enemy without them ever knowing I was there."

"So, your just another soldier looking for the next war like my brother and old man." He responded gruffly. Great this was going to be tough, more eyes to watch him, it would be harder to get things done. It would be different but, manageable. The important thing would be what sort of missions he would have in mind. Perhaps he could get paid by one side if he helped knock out some competition. This idea appealed ti him greatly.

Sam came back with his coffee in hand. He was smiling and sipping away, allowing the coffee to warm his bones and his hands. He took a seat in the reception area to continue conversation with the others. It was a lot better than just staying in the empty break room. He wondered about how the rest of the day would go, and where the new guy was going to be posted.

A month has passed in the windy city of Chicago. It is now early April Spring may be here but there is still a n** in the evening air. It leaves you raw much like the long held tension of the uneasy truce between the gangs. The only question now is who will strike first and where?

She was working at her desk when the call had come in. Officer Samuel Brown had been found dead in the train yards. She had gotten to know Sam and his wife Sonya well over the years. Sonya had just had their second child a month ago, she knew this would be hard. Sheila prayed that she would get through it for the sake of her daughter and infant son. As she called the other officers together she could feel er face get red with anger. If this didn't light a fire under the 'boys' around the office than not a damn thing would. So much for the 'peace treat among the gangs.' Sheila thought to herself as she called a meeting over the intercom.

I sat in the conference room, my hat on the table, coffee in my hand. Sipping it I waited for something to break the silence. Nothing much to it. We all knew why we were here, just nobody wanted to say it. A cop had gone down in the line of duty and we were all here waiting for the verdict: war or passive aggression. Whether we'd start putting bullets in gangsters or just bumping up their tickets a few bucks. Still we all stayed silent, and the coffee still tasted terrible.
