I would agree with Byakko Tasutsuki on the pictures. I also voted "Other" since there wasn't an all of the above option. Personally I usually describe my character because I can't draw, and my characters are hard to find already existing pictures for. The one of the guilds I'm in prefers not to use anime pics because, as Da Canuck said, they find it hard to connect with the character. But they don't forbid others from using them. That being said- Kay9214 has a point. Having an anime picture does not automaticly make you bad at RPing. The player is either good or bad and no picture can change that fact.

When it comes to Role Playing though- I usually prefer modern-fantasy style. It gives you the freedom to have fantasy characters, with modern ones and modern tech, and in some cases even ones from space depending on when you set the time period. Lots of fun, but there is nothing like that here. So far the Drow RP is the only one I might join, though I haven't decided yet. If not then I'll just leave. No point in being here if there's nothing to do but lurk.

Byakko Yasutsuki
Something occurred to me.

Now I mean no offense by this, but being against anime pictures for RPs on a website that is an Anime RPing site could be construed as hypocritical.

Just something to consider.

Also, 'Depthless Imagination' shouldn't mean 'state-limited imagination'. :l

This was to get a general consensus not to make an absolute ruling. Some anime is ok I just am not a fan of some of the images. As I said before I use anime myself sometimes.

i would say mostly real but i could see anime.
for Real mostly cause it gives the emotions and feeling to it and people get more attatched to the character and their personality. Thus making the role play more realistic feel and awesome.
for anime:
not so much attached to chacters cause the picture is usually not emeotioned or too fake causeing and still boreing effect.

-just realized i sounded like a complete nerd :/
it cause im a graphic comic fan and those r more realistic than anime mangas

I have been reading the post and keeping my opinion to myself. I fear this may cause a split in the guild. The question is not for or against anime pictures. It's if do we want to use these pictures in the guild. It is as a few have expressed a situational thing. When it comes to past or present based RPs it should be a real picture. Only because a person may have looked like that. As for a future based RP anime might be fine. As long as it is not a little kid firing to guns at once or a person carrying something that doesn't seem real like a women lifting a nuclear bomb over her head. So as long as it seems realistic I don't see why not give the option. But we must remember this decision could split the guild right down the middle. Creating something that no one can foresee destroying our wonderful guild.

I whole heartedly agree with this perspective. I prefer 'more realistic' images myself but I am also a fan of Heise's work and have used some of those images. I thing Ghosts point about some character who looks like they are 5, yet has the figure and outfit of a stripper and a scythe that looks like a telephone pole I am a little leery.

I have difficulty taking character's seriously when they use anime pictures, because often the characters I see are just ripped from said anime. Not every does it of course, but I see it quite often.

As well the lack of distinguishing features outside of hair colors makes it really difficult for me to identify the character and distinguish them from one another. Every male character looks the same, every female the same. They just blur together. As well when I'm trying to imagine a realistic setting in my mind with everything going on, suddenly there is this bright pink little girl that flies in the picture just clashing with everything else. I suppose I'm just too old fashioned, but it does really bother me. There are times of course when I can overlook it, when people use artwork that has a lot of detail and hard work put into it. I don't mean someone with a dress with a million things going on in it. But a character who looks like a normal dressed guy, with a very really well drawn face with proper features which you can identify, normal sized eyes, clothes that are realistic but also show off their clothing style. But I find it incredibly rare to see a character using such an image.

I'm okay with anime pictures as long as they're serious. I don't want to see Chibi or anything ridiculous like that. I like having my options open when it comes to which character I play. One of my characters has an anime picture, another is a real life photo, and yet another is in a serious western painting. Each character has a different art style because the picture I use for the happens to be absolutely perfect for the job of depicting that character's look and feel.

When I see a demand for a certain art style I feel pigeon-holed into a certain character or I have to go looking for the perfect picture to depict the character I have in mind all over.

I prefer anime images or CG or drawn. Just not real pictures. It's a roleplay where the situation most likely is one that isn't likely to occur in the real world so why have people stick to using real images. Not to mention I see real people every day. I know what they look like. I am a real person so why would I want to RP as a real person. I want to see something of fantasy in a made up RP world. Seeing images of real people just kind of ruins the concept of using my imagination (that being said I don't mind a good, detailed character description like we used to do back in the day. some characters just don't exist on google, believe it or not). I honestly don't care what images others want to use (be they real, anime or something else of their desire) though I refuse to use real images. The closest to real I'll get is using a CG image of an anime or video game character I like.

To be honest my reason for not liking real life images is kind of silly, but it just kind of bugs me. The idea of RPing as an actual living person is just kinda creepy, its like stealing their face and using it as your own. I dunno maybe I'm weird, its just kind of unsettling. With anime its ink and paper, they are who you want them to be, but when I see RL pics I can't get over the fact that who I'm seeing is a real person that I could randomly pass by on the street, that their face is being used to represent something or someone they're not. Also I suppose it stems from the types of rps I tend to do. I rarely do realistic settings, so I have no need for realism, and anime pics are just more aesthetically pleasing for me.

I agree. I feel more comfortable RPing a character rather than attempting a historical or pre-existing character. It's usually because I don't feel qualified to wear that mask. It feels like I am being dishonorable toward the source.

Does it matter?

Use whatever fits your preference and everyone one wins. *sips tea*
