Dr. Maria Hendricks The officer may not have noticed, but as a doctor, Maria was familiar with the human body and recognized the muscular tension instantly. Her brows drew down with concern; had he suddenly had a bout of pain? Although she knew the importance of the statement for the police, she nearly stepped forward to check on Firo. Only because he lacked other signs of distress did she wait.
Officer Bickman scrutinized Firo. "What gave you that impression? Was there something about their clothing, or did they say something that made you think that? Anything you can remember, anything at all, will be helpful." Outside the window, the sky had begun to tinge with pink, a sign that the sun was finally about to rise. The night had been long, and it still was not over for Maria. She had another three hours to her shift, then she would be able to go home and sleep for six-eight hours without being called in. Calling her attention back to Firo, she tore her gaze from the impending sunrise to watch his response to the officer.

Firo MartilloFiro shook his head as he closed his eyes, trying to remember what the Gandor men looked like. He let out a sigh of defeat, " I'm afraid I don't remember much of what they look like. I just remember there were three of them. My apologies, Officer. I think I was just too scared that I assumed it was Firo Martillo and a couple of his men. Maybe it was just a couple of kids trying to make a quick buck," Firo answered, letting out a heavy sigh. This officer was persistent. He needed a way to get rid of him and get Antonio and Silvio down there quickly. Opening his eyes again, Firo looked over to the doctor, smiling politely at her, " Would it be alright to call my brothers?" he questioned, " I gave everything that I could remember, and I honestly don't think I could be of much more help to the officer." The officer scrunched his nose at Firo, closing the memo pad and stuffing it into the pocket of the black shirt he wore, " I can take the hint, Mr. Green. I understand that you'd rather spend time with your family than with an officer. However, if you do happen to remember something about the people who shot you, please call us," he told him, before turning to leave the room. He nodded his head at the doctor, smiling at her as he walked out of the room.

Dr. Maria Hendricks Maria nodded at Firo's question. "Of course, just a moment." Maria responded to Officer Bickman's nod with a nod and a smile of her own. She knew law enforcement officers often had difficult jobs, more than her own in some ways, less in others. Her head turned to watch the officer leave, but as soon as he was gone, her attention reverted to Firo. She walked to the bedside table, which held a room phone. Knowing how difficult it would be for Firo to reach it with his wounds, she moved it to the bed beside his legs on his good side. "Just dial 9 before the number you want to call. I have to go check on other patients, so just hit the nurse call button if you need anything."
She walked to the door, her mind already going through the list of everything she needed to take care of before she left, but her steps slowed and she caught the doorway with a hand instead of leaving. She stood there for a long moment, her eyes searching the hallway as her mind searched for the words she wanted to say. After a long minute, she turned to look over her shoulder with a smile. "It was a miracle that none of the bullets hit anything vital. You must be a really lucky person. I'm glad." Her piece said, she turned and disappeared into the hall.

Firo MartilloFiro nodded as the doctor pulled the phone closer to him. He smiled up at her, " Thank you so much for everything. If I could, I would donate to this hospital, just to pay you back for saving my life," he told her, smiling. Firo quietly watched her walk out, waiting patiently until she was out of earshot before he picked up the phone, dialing Antonio's number. He held the phone up to his ear with his shoulder, waiting impatiently as he heard a grunt on the other end. " Ciao?" Antonio greeted in a deep, husky voice. " Don't you 'ciao' me, lard a*s! You and Silvio need to come over here right now and act like the concerned brothers you are!" Firo hissed lowly, trying to keep his voice down. Antonio gasped, " Boss, is that really you?! I heard Gandor men shot you down! We were trying to decide what to do if you didn't make it out alive," he explained. " Well, I am alive, and I refuse to die until you and Silvio get over here! And remember... Don't use my real name. You two are my brothers, so act like it. My alias is Francis Green Remember that!" Firo ordered, hanging up the phone. He only hoped Antonio and Silvio were smart enough to remember his alias. Even though they were his blood brothers, they got on his nerves a lot.

Dr. Maria Hendricks The rest of Maria's shift passed by in a mercifully quick fashion. Before she knew it, she was headed home to pass out for as long as she could manage. As she parked her little car in front of her apartment, her stomach gurgled as a reminder that she hadn't eaten in hours. It also reminded her that she had been at the hospital too much this week to bother grocery shopping, and her pantry was as empty as the Sahara Desert. Her feet dragged on her way into the apartment. None of her leftovers would be any good by now.
The despair of having no food dragged over her as she entered her apartment until she glanced at her food shelves and realized she had a pack of ramen left. It wasn't much, but it was more than she expected. Thirty minutes later, she had little trouble falling asleep despite the morning sunshine through the windows. *** Ten hours later, Maria went through her rounds at the hospital. Dr. Thompson had wanted her to follow up with all the patients in the ICU before joining him in the ER. Her first several patients had been doing very well, and she found herself at the door to Firo's room once again. With a gentle knock, she opened the door and stepped in. "Good evening, Francis. How are you feeling tonight?"
