Churro watched the squirrel and the iguana climb into the tree, but their words were what interested her more. It was an interesting idea, but one that seemed too vague to comprehend.
"Well we are all as different as the animal kingdom is diverse, so it can't just be our species. And we are all. . . you know," she halted mid sentence. Saying that she was dead was harder than thinking it. It was like admitting it would only make it more real. But maybe there as some other common factor that linked them.
"I'm Churro, of the River clan," she introduced herself, standing up and placing one hand over her heart. "Who are you, that do not wander blindly into the light?"

Wulfy looked over at the otter who had given her name. Churro was an odd one, but he himself was named Wulfy after all so who was he to judge. He saw that he was larger in stature to these animals like normal even in this form, but ignored it as he went to speak in his gruff tone. "Wulfy, no clan, just a pack." He says crossing his arms.

Rick listened as two of the people introduced themselves. his tail swaying calmly off the branch. "Rick, Oracles of the Trees." Rick stated turning over a bit on the branch he was on to look at the people better. The Oracles weren't a pack or anything like that, it was more of just a small group of iguanas that came together to give reports on what was going on in their given areas. He was given charge of an area after his father had passed and thus became one of the oracles. Given their situation, Rick found that similar to himself the group didn't seem all that nervous or panicked about whatever was going on.

"Wulfy, from the pack and Oracle Rick from the trees. We are in a predicament, it seems," she stated quizzically. "Somehow, in our own ways, we have come to this place, perhaps before our time, perhaps because of it."
It was a strange sight indeed, that they should be here, at the crossroads of life and death. The how of getting here was obvious, but why was a more appealing mystery.
"The light pulls at us, even now I can feel it," Churro admitted with a shutter as she wrapped her arms around herself. "But I'm not ready to go. Not yet." There was still one last thing she must do before she could allow herself to rest in peace.

Hazel waved as she looked around at the others. "Hazel of the Nut clan." She looked as happy as a clam in the tree. Like nothing that was currently happening bothered her. As Churro mentioned it, she could still feel the light pulling her, and she glanced towards it before shaking her head. "I'm not ready to go either. I don't know why, but I'm not ready to be done just yet."

Wulfy Sighed and looked at the otter. "So what are you saying we should do then? I don't see a way out other than up or across this long tree. I mean if you haven't noticed, this light is urging us all to come and all these others are mindless."
He had a bite in his speech without purpose. He didn't mean to be mean, but it was how he was and was most likely one of the reasons he was here in the first place. He hated the feeling of the light pulling on him, but he ignored it, not really knowing why.

Rick nodded, he could feel the light pulling slightly at him, but something in his head had no intention of going over to it. Looking up through the trees branches he smiled a bit "I wouldn't mind climbing up." he said letting out a small chuckle. As long as it didn't get cold, Rick figured he should be fine. These people seemed like the only other ones like him, free from the trail of moving spirits, and they didn't seem to be interested in harming any other the others.

"Climbing up sounds like fun! I can try it!" She also volunteered, her hand shooting straight up like a first grader in class. Before anyone told her otherwise, she jumped to her feet and scrambled farther up the tree. If there was anything Hazel was good at, it was climbing trees, not matter what kind it was. This tree proved no problem so far, which was good, right?

"All I have are the stories of my clan. We do not normally commune with our dead, unlike some of the other animals. We look to the waters for wisdom and guidance," she explained to the gruff wolf. Churro hadn't exactly expected kindness from him, but was glad for the curb to his hostility. The otter could only guess that all the predators were that way.
"Hazel of the nut, wait!" she called out when the squirrel darted into the higher branches. Although it was leafless, the bows proved to be dense, causing them to lose sight of her within moments.
"Who dares to scratch at my bark?" a raspy voice croaked irritably. The bare limbs of the tree began to sway in a nonexistent breeze. With a creak and a groan, one of the higher limbs whipped at a sharp angle, smacking the offending rodent away.
A fissure in the trunk started to morph, revealing a gaunt face with a jagged maw. It had no eyes, but it looks towards the group as if it knew they were there despite its blindness.
"Who rests at my roots instead of making the endless march?"

An irritated voice made Hazel pause, which proved to be a mistake. Pain erupted through her as a branch whipped out of nowhere and smacked her off the tree. Gravity still seemed to work there, since she was falling. Hazel hated falling, it never ended up good if you fell out of a tree.
She uttered a scream as she fell, her arms flailing to try and grab a hold of something, anything really at this point. Though she knew she wasn't alive anymore, it appeared that they still felt pain. And Hazel was not looking forward to broken bones on this new adventure.

Hearing a voice, Rick sat up from where he was and looked around. A cry went out above him, and looking up he spotted Hazel falling. Jumping from where he was he managed to catch her and turn face up to guard her from the quickly approaching ground. Hitting the earth harder than he had expected, Rick felt the air quickly leaving his lungs. Looking at Hazel who was on top of him he spoke as he tried to regain his breath "You... you alright?" Rick asked. He was an Oracle, keeping the creatures and land safe came naturally to him, no matter what the cost might be.

Wulfy heard the voice, the crack of a branch, and then a scream from above. He took a step away from the tree as it seemed like a bad idea to rest on it anymore. Looking to the sky he saw the squirrel coming down fast and he was in no hurry to save her. Expecting her to hit the ground he was surprised when he saw the iguana save her and take a good hit.
Looking back to the tree he subdued his low growl. Knowing whatever this was was most likely stronger than him as how were you supposed to hurt a tree? Also without his pack he didn't have a chance he decided to see if it could help. "A wolf, squirrel, iguana, and otter. Now who are you?" He asks with the assumption of if they have to ask questions, why not this thing?

The moment the tree started to sway and speak, Churro leapt from the root that shuttered and groaned beneath her. It was surprising, but no more so than anything else about their current situation. The squirrel and iguana abruptly landed at her feet, which caused her to dart a couple paces back out of reflex.
"Insolent pup, its no wonder you are here. Can't see passed the tip of your nose. This is the road to the Beyond," the great tree stated as if that was a painfully obvious fact.
"I know you. You are the Tide Oak," Churro awed, undaunted by the nearness of the wolf. He suddenly seemed like less of a threat. When the others looked lost at her realization, she explained. " When I was growing up, my father used to tell me and my siblings stories about the Tide Oak and how his strong roots and high limbs protected the river from the raging seas. It was the tallest, strongest and oldest of the all the trees along the river."
Looking over her shoulder to the slowly moving crowd, she made another connection.
"You stop the dead from going upriver too, don't you? Make sure that they keep going with the tide, right?"

Hazel made a noise as she landed on something softer than the ground. Looking down, she was fairly surprised to see Rick the iguana underneath her. She quickly scrambled off of him, apologizing profusely. "I'm so sorry! Are you ok? I didn't break anything did I? Oh god I'm SO SORRY." She rambled, trying to see if he was alright but unsure how to go about it. Her ears flattened onto her head, partly out of embarrassment and out of guilt. If she had just waited, Rick wouldn't have had to break her fall.
At the otter's revelation, she looked over to the other girl, a completely lost look on her face. As the other explained, it changed to one of familiarity. "I've heard stories too of an ancient strong oak, but my clan had forgotten the name ages ago." She chimed in, but more just for her own sake. When Churro mentioned the other purpose of the tree, Hazel's expression darkened. She wasn't exactly one for rules, and the fact that she was dead made her want to rebel even more. "Whaddya mean keep with the tide? You mean we've got no oh her choice?!" Hazel shouted, more loudly than she intended.

Rick the Iguana
Oracles of the Trees
Rick pushed himself up into a sitting position as Hazel got up and started apologizing to him for some reason. He shook his head a bit and gave a small warm smile "Don't worry.... about it.... I acted on... my own accord." Rick said not wanting Hazel to feel guilty as he continued to try and catch his breath. Listening as the others spoke, Rick looked up at the ancient tree suddenly remembering the Spirit Tree in the older legends that his people had passed down. I thought it would have been a bit more.... leafy he thought to himself as he looked up at it. Hearing what the others had called it, Rick couldn't help but to smile a bit finding it pretty cool that the tree had so many different names.
