Anna Adair Age: 11 Hogwarts Student Slytherin ______________________________________________________________________ Anna walked up to grab a feather. She was still debating on if she was going to attempt some practice before actually trying. When she got back to her seat, she sat down, took a few notes on the paper about the spell and started to move her wand in the motion shown. She then looked at the feather and pointed her wand at it."Wingardium Leviosa" Anna spoke as she did the wand movement. The feather did not even quiver. She looked at the wand motion again to see what was wrong. She attempted and failed a few more times before the feather quivered. She focused harder, attempted the spell again and the feather rose with her wand. When it rose she smiled and the feather just swayed. After a few seconds she decided to practice a few more times, casting the spell and watching the feather move up and down.OOC: =Text =Speech =Thoughts

Listen to me, please sit down and stay- I'm gonna build a house and hide away! Gather timber from the ground... I'll build a castle that won't fall down. And when I'm done the clock will stop and from, Our heads will come bright flowers. E L S B E T H L Y N W E N S H O I C H E T BLOOD TRAITOR β FORMER HUFFLEPUFF β CHARMS PROFESSOR Elsie sat at her desk, marking down each student for attendance as they entered the classroom, and waited until most of the seats were filled before rising from her seat, textbook in one hand, wand in the other. "Accio homework," she said cheerfully, collecting the papers, and turned to the correct page in the book as she wrote REPARO - THE MENDING CHARM on the board in bright red chalk. "Good morning everyone! Today we'll be learning about and attempting the mending charm, which should prove extremely useful to you over the course of your years at school." The blonde witch remembered being a gawky teen herself, and the sheer number of things she'd broken by either forgetting she'd left them somewhere, tripping over them... it went on.
"The mending charm was invented by a resourceful witch named Orabella Nuttley, who worked for the Ministry of Magic as a member of the Improper Use of Magic Office in the 1750s. When the Colosseum- yes, the one in Rome- was accidentally destroyed by magic, she created this charm to repair it. When cast effectively this spell can do amazing things- restore houses after natural disasters like earthquakes or floods, repair roads and bridges, and so forth. Obviously today we'll be practicing on a much smaller scale," Elsie added reassuringly.
"Reparo will return any broken object to its former state, and works on most everything.... with the exception of cursed or enchanted objects. However, and this is very important, so I want you all taking notes- this charm can only be used on inanimate objects. You cannot cast it on a person or animal. It won't work properly and you could scar someone terribly. Now, the pronunciation is reh-PAH-roh, and the incantation means 'to repair'." The professor turned back to the board, and sketched the wand movement of the charm:
"I have a number of broken items up here in this box on my desk- teacups, spoons and forks, plates, eyeglasses, latches... Come up and pick out something, and then you can get to work practicing." I don't know, I can't contain my heartbeat- I am dancing, shrouded by green trees! I am whirling, wearing my sun feet; And humming children to sleep. I love to watch the light you spread to the room... See how it dances from you to me to you.

Lydia supposed this was a spell that was actually useful, and seemingly benevolent enough. She couldn't really think of any way a mending charm could be used for ill, anyways, and she didn't think God would mind terribly if she did ever use this one, although she never practiced magic outside of class, and reasoned that she had to obey her professors in class, so it wasn't really her fault. Dad said submission to authority was important. It built up character. The bible said you shouldn't listen to teachers of evil, either, but.... she didn't want to get kicked out. Somehow Lydia was still convinced she'd be in heaps of trouble, even if it was because she was a complete failure of a witch. "Reh-PAH-roh," she uttered cautiously, delicately trying the zig-zagging wand movement, and was shocked when the broken cup in front of her mended itself instantaneously. We all are running our very own races, Set upon the most dangerous of places. We are left with a void in our chests we're aching to fill... The doves come to gather our every need; they lift them up- To Heaven through the mouths from which we speak.

Hikaru arrived later than he had hoped but from what he could tell he wasn't late. He had stayed up to finish a book and he had been paying for it. He was ready for not taking. He had so much parchment filled from his notes of various classes, he could likely make a book. When it came time for practical he goabbed a pair of broken eyeglasses. He set them carefully on the desk. he had figured out if he was too nervous he couldn't do the spells right. sometimes his wand seems to protest too. He made sure he was good and ready this time. this time his first time he made sure he was confident on what to do, and it payed off! He now had a pair of fixed eye glasses!

It was Tuesday morning, which marked Elsie's second day of classes. Luckily, her only class today was the first years, and if she'd handled the second and fifth year yesterdays, she was sure she'd be fine. She rearranged her desk for the millionth time, made sure the door hadn't swung shut on her, and began to write on the board as students began to file inside; the 8 o'clock bell was sure to begin to toll within a minute or two, marking the beginning of the first period of classes. When she was done writing she turned to face the class, wiping a bit of errant chalk dust off of her jeans. In one corner of the board the class rules were neatly outlined; in another the homework assignment, in yet another the supply list, and in the final corner, a doodle that looked like it had been scrawled by a student and smudged over. In the center WHAT IS A CHARM? was written in bright yellow chalk, and underlined. Twice. "Good morning everyone," Elsie said brightly, hoping she didn't sound condescending or as if she expected them all to chorus 'good morning' back. "I hope you enjoyed your first day of classes yesterday. This is Charms, and I will be your Charms instructor for the rest of your time here. My name is Professor Shoichet. I have a list with all of your names, but I'd like to put names to faces, so if you could all go around the room and tell me who you are and your house, that would be excellent. No need to stand, just be loud and clear. And ten points to the house of anyone who can tell me what a charm is while they're at it, alright? The tall blonde woman sat rather casually on the desk, long legs easily touching the floor, as she went down the list with her wand, looking up at the sound of each student's voice. I don't know, I can't contain my heartbeat- I am dancing, shrouded by green trees! I am whirling, wearing my sun feet; And humming children to sleep. I love to watch the light you spread to the room... See how it dances from you to me to you.

βββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββββ Daniel resisted the urge to yawn as he entered the Charms classroom and took his seat. Last night, he had his first astronomy lesson which finished close to midnight and so he found himself going to bed much later than he usually did back home, and combined with Charms being the first class in the early morning, it led to one exhausted student. At least the professor seemed really nice, and very pretty.
He copied notes from the board while more students entered the class and when the class seemed full, the professor started the lesson. To his dismay, they were asked to introduce themselves, although Daniel was unsurprised; they'd already done this in the previous classes and they'd probably do it for the rest of the week as well. "I'm Daniel Jacobs, from Hufflepuff," he announced when it was his turn, hoping his voice didn't sound half as anxious as he felt. He didn't even try to answer the question Professor Shoichet asked, partly because he was unsure of the answer and partly because he didn't want the attention he'd inadvertently get.

I don't have time for dancin' That's just gonna have to wait a while Ain't got time for messin' around And it's not my style... Calliandra sat calmly in a desk, reading over the rules in written out on the board. They seemed simple and straightforward, the kind of things that she expected to be required to do. Quietly, she set her wand on the desk in front of her. When the professor told them they would be introducing themselves, Calliandra fought the urge to sigh. Public speaking, ugh.
When her time came, Calliandra folded her hands in her lap before speaking up. βI am Calliandra Acton, Slytherin, and a charm is a spell which affects the behavior or other aspects of an object without changing it's...β Calliandra paused, looking for the right word. She could feel a flush coming to her cheeks, and she started wringing her hands in her lap. Embarrassment grew making her want to hide. Finally, the word came to her, and Calliandra took a deep breath before finishing, βbasic nature.β Calliandra fell silent, keeping her eyes fixed on her professor as she waited for her comments. And I'm almost there I'm almost there People down here think I'm crazy But I don't care... OOC: Say anything. Anastasia was eager to enter her first Charms class. This had always been her mother's favorite subject at Beauxbatons and Ana wondered if it would have the same feeling for her here. Strutting casually into the classroom, she noticed that she wasn't the first one, it mildly irked her. She would have liked her seat where she wanted without having to calculate the proper amount of space between people. Sighing lightly, she found a space in the middle row more towards the right side of the classroom and settled her things down. Placing her bag down beside her, to the right, she digs around for her necessities for this period. Her wand being one of those. She was really growing close with her wand. The shape, texture, and feel of it was really forming to her. She was glad it chose her.
Once everyone in the class was seated and prepared it was time to start. The professor spoke lightly and with vigor, Ana smiled keenly, she would enjoy this class at the start of her days. The energy Professor Shoichet projected was like a jolt of happiness. It was evident that she enjoyed her profession. Just as she had expected though, there would be introductions an also a question attached to it. Ana straightened herself up, and prepared to answer the question. Alas, she wasn't quite in line for that. A girl a few seats before her answered first. A Slytherin first year by the name of Calliandra Acton. She would have to remember her. Huffing softly, hiding her inner spoiled brat, she awaited her turn to speak.
Finally making it over to Ana, she smiled sweetly and spoke clearly and with a slightly elevated tone. "My name is Anastasia Whellworth and I am a Hufflepuff." She spoke. Her eyes directly linked to where the professor was seated and her hands folded in front of her. She kept herself up to code in the eyes of authority figures. It seemed to have no purpose than the screw with students. He grabbed a seat near the back. The teacher asked the class to lightly introduce themselves and asked to define a charm. Gertrude Laura Adelwood Adopted Muggleborn First Year Hufflepuff I go by Gertie... Oh and I'm 11 years old... Location: Charms Class - Tuesday @ 8:00am Gertie practically skipped into class. She was excited to learn about spells. Course she was even more excited for potions later that afternoon. Seeing a few of her Hufflepuff friends, she skipped over to Daniel who appeared to be rather tired. βGood morning Daniel! You seem pretty tired. Astronomy, wear you out last night?β She asked brightly before class began. Taking the seat next to him Gertie was super happy. She glanced at the board before taking her stuff out for class. The Hufflepuff turned her attention to her professor when she spoke. βGood morning Professor,β Gertie greeted her right back with eagerly. This was so exciting! Introduction was probably the best part of the week. Gertie loved introducing herself she always did it in the same upbeat way. βMy nameβs Gertrude Adelwood, everyone calls me Gertie. Iβm in Hufflepuff.β She told Professor Shoichetβs brightly. Status: Class... Excited Wearing: Hufflepuff Uniform With: Daniel OOC: ---No one's doubting your brains or creativity But it's your heart I'm interested in Ravenclaw's nice, but I believe you'll flourish best in Hufflepuff!

Thus far, the class was perfectly polite, and seemingly eager to learn. "Ten points to Slytherin for your answer, Calliandra," she said with a reassuring smile. "Simply put, a charm adds certain properties to an object or creature that were not there before. For example, a heating charm would warm up a room- the object is the room, the property the added warmth. Many of you, especially those who have grown up around magic, may be under the impression that charms are rather simple spells generally used for housework and such, and quite easy to cast."
Her tone was a bit dry, although her voice remained as calm as ever. "While it's true that there are plenty of very straightforward charms, I want to warn you all now that taking any particular branch of magic as simplistic or 'fluff' can be a very big mistake. Charms gone wrong are every bit as dangerous as any other spell. You would not want a fire-casting charm to backfire on you, or a shield charm to fail in the midst of defending yourself. There are some incredibly powerful and dangerous charms out there, and it would not bode well for any capable witch or wizard to take them too lightly." She stepped up to the board, a piece of chalk in hand, and wrote CONCENTRATION, WAND MOVEMENT, PRONUNCIATION, VISUALIZATION underneath WHAT IS A CHARM?, then turned back round to face the students. "Those are what are required to successfully cast a charm. We will not be performing any charmwork in this class until you are confident enough in those four aspects to do so, and I am confident enough in your abilities to trust you. You will be learning those four essentials for homework in the first chapter of your textbook. I would advise you not to blow it off, or you will not participate in any spell-casting next class. Any questions?" I don't know, I can't contain my heartbeat- I am dancing, shrouded by green trees! I am whirling, wearing my sun feet; And humming children to sleep. I love to watch the light you spread to the room... See how it dances from you to me to you.

Andy O'Farrell
first year // ravenclaw // muggle-born // gender-fluid
____________________________________________
Andy was late to class - as usual, it seemed, for they had never set foot in such a large castle before (not to mention one in which the staircases moved), and so they seemed to be perpetually losing their way, costing them several minutes of their time, if not more. When they finally walked into the Charms classroom, it was just as the last student seemed to be announcing their name, and Andy's head ducked down as they slid into the first empty seat.
Physically, Andy's gender was unclear, though they chose to wear a male set of Ravenclaw's uniform, their tie done up as neatly as they could (they had never had to wear a tie before). When it was becoming obvious that they were the only one yet to say their name, they murmured shyly, "My name is Andy O'Farrell, Professor... I'm sorry I'm late."
Quickly, they got out their notebook and quill and began jotting down the information written on the board. They had never even heard of a charm before... What were they getting themself into?

Listen to me, please sit down and stay- I'm gonna build a house and hide away! Gather timber from the ground... I'll build a castle that won't fall down. And when I'm done the clock will stop and from, Our heads will come bright flowers. E L S B E T H L Y N W E N S H O I C H E T BLOOD TRAITOR β FORMER HUFFLEPUFF β CHARMS PROFESSOR Elsie was thrilled to be teaching the first years their first official charm today; she was glad she didn't teach a subject that was all lecture, like History of Magic. She wanted to be able to actually see them learning. Once they'd taken their seats and she was done taking attendance, she rose from her desk. "Good morning everyone! Today you will be learning about, and attempting, your very first charm." She nodded to the board behind her, where Wingardium Leviosa was written in neat cursive.
"Before we begin the lesson, let's briefly go over the homework assignment- you should have read up on the four essentials of casting a charm successfully." Textbook in hand, she walked up and down between the desks as she went over the reading. "First, you must focus on your objective when casting any spell. If you are distracted or not paying proper attention to your target, the spell will either fail entirely, backfire onto you, or give you less than stellar results. This is especially important in stressful situations, such as when you are defending yourself or trying to help someone. Second, your wand movements must be precise. Charms is a delicate branch of magic. Many charms will not function properly if the wand was flicked or swirled wildly. Thirdly, you must stress syllables properly. Not pronouncing a charm correctly or slurring or stammering the words is one of the most common reasons for a charm to fail. Finally, visualization, not to be confused with concentration. Technically, you can cast a charm without visualizing it, but it certainly helps to have an idea of what you want to achieve. See it to believe it, to speak," she laughed, and then snapped the book shut, approaching the board once more.
"Right then, if you are all prepared, let's go over the levitation charm, which is what we will be learning today." Chalk in hand, she started to write the charm's definition and lecture simultaneously. "Please take notes, everyone, it will help with your out of class practicing. Simply put, the levitation charm can be used to levitate any object, including, with enough practice and skill, things that a human being would never have the strength to lift on their own, such as heavy furniture, downed trees, vehicles, and so on. The object levitated can be lifted as high as the caster is able to see. The only thing the charm cannot lift is humans- it only effects the clothing worn."
The blonde turned to face the students with a small smile as she recounted the charm's history. "It was created in the sixteenth century by a wizard named Jarleth Hobart, whose goal was to attempt human flight. He failed, and broke sixteen bones for his trouble- as well as a penalty for 'Extraordinary Stupidity' from the Chief Warlock of the Wizengamot. However, the charm survived his embarrassment, and is one of the most common, well-known charms in the wizarding world."
Turning back to the board, Elsie sketched the wand movement of the spell:
"The pronunciation is as follows; Wing-GAR-dee-um levi-O-sa. The incantation essentially means, 'lift up high'. Now, if everyone feels ready, please come up and take a feather from this box on my desk." She indicated the box, containing various feathers of all shapes, sizes, and colors, sitting on the desk beside her. I don't know, I can't contain my heartbeat- I am dancing, shrouded by green trees! I am whirling, wearing my sun feet; And humming children to sleep. I love to watch the light you spread to the room... See how it dances from you to me to you.
