Any voices of rationality in her head were formed but unable to pierce the veil of her present lunacy. Kagami's father embraced his wife and daughter and smiled. The weeps from the enchantress continued steadily until she could somewhat regain her composure. She let her parents go before looking at them. Kyoka and Suigetsu Hari were a handsome couple and some of Kirigakure's most loyal ninjas. Once Kagami was able to return to her usual poise she would ask the one question she always wanted to ask. The mother and father remained silent and waited in anticipation of her speaking. There was certainly love in their faces but their eyes displayed a flicker of disappointment. It was as if they knew what their daughter was doing while they were dead and were awaiting her confession. "Why did you throw your lives away for a dying village? You left me behind." She spoke with a pained tone that was held back and then released with a sigh. They sighed in return before speaking in unison. "We did what we were supposed to do. Kagami, protecting Kirigakure also meant protecting you." Their synchronized speech and out of character mannerisms were not to be questioned by Kagami. She was choosing to play into the fiction unfolding before her until she stopped doubting. "I got enough of my revenge on this world for what happened to you two. But it was all for naught in the end anyway." Kagami then matched the phantoms of her parents' alien vocal tonality. "Kagami, we know that you can make all that you have done wrong right again. Just keep accepting, close your eyes, and give in. Just let go of the grip binding you to rationality and take the power it offers." Kagami nodded in acceptance as the ephemeral phantoms fleetingly dissipated. She ran forward in an attempt to hug them goodbye before they were gone. Closed and teary eyes then opened to reveal blood-red eyes with green line pupils. The Ketsuryugan was now awake.

The laughter from her prior fight still echoing in her ears at varying frequencies, Kagerou walked quickly through the roots of the Sero. She had defeated the dog, entered the Sero, and with some manipulation of the Sero's security that had been meticulously planned in advance, acquired access to the normally forbidden lower root levels. Voices of stories long gone, whispered through the cracks of the throbbing laughs that filled Kagerou's heads. Though, in due time and with due temperance, this disturbing distraction faded into nothingness.
There was only one time when Kagerou's even tempered calm was disturbed. A hoarse voice that rang so familiar yet so different caught her attention as something more than the illusions the Sero tempted her with. Her head raised, but by the time she turned around to see what had caused her to feel that something was odd, the flash of silver hair had wholly disappeared around the corner. She gave herself two seconds to contemplate what had happened. After the two seconds, she tore herself away. Whatever she was thinking, she had to place the living, breathing Kagami over some ghosts and hallucinations of the past.
After the usual harrowing gauntlet that the Sero tended to throw at those who tried it, Kagerou finally came upon Kagami. An obvious black wall of some sort of immaterial substance like solid smoke blockaded the path in front of Kagerou. On the other side, she could feel Kagami's chakra. It could be a trap, but Kagerou wouldn't know until she tried. After some hesitation, during which time Kagami finished her meeting with her parents on the other side, Kagerou took her chances and stepped through the veil.
When she saw Kagami on the other side, even discounting the strange red eyes she had now, Kagerou breathed a sigh of relief. "You are alive," Kagerou's level voice nonetheless lilted happily as she celebrated Kagami's health with words, "Are you hurt anywhere?". [18 sentences]
__ Kagami sank to her knees as green-lined but mostly red eyes flooded with tears beyond control. She began wheezing as if she had a mouthful of smoke, but instead, the cries of her hate turned into gasps of regret. The face of every person she killed or affected because of her actions in Kogarashi overwhelmed her mind. The mass displacement caused by her attack on Uzushiogakure and the images of Chie and Chouga's corpses among others. This tragic scene of immense regret is what Kagerou would approach. Her words were not heard by Kagami although she did open her eyes to acknowledge her presence. She then held her hands in front of her in horror as if seeing the blood that coated them. "What have I done? Good God...what have I done? I've become an enchantress of vengeance who's hurt far more than she's helped." Her words of regret finally pierced through the overwhelming and raw expressions of sorrow. Every brick in her fortress of rationalization crumbled around her. Her new eyes offered new visions and she did not like what she saw. But what she did not realize, as the first Ketsuryugan wielder, was that her secondary ego had now fully taken control. The dark enchantress was being completely suppressed by the kind priestess of her girlhood. In her current state of mind, she could not detect the change for she was just experiencing a suppressed part of herself. No matter how deeply buried, this was who she was as well so she could not tell the difference. Kagami's "blood dragon" was her own conscious that she abandoned long ago. Her mind turned from hopelessness at her, now recognized, fall from grace to trying to desperately make reparations. "I need...to right the wrongs I've made. How? Konohagakure needs reparations certainly. But, that'll be impossible. Toso! He should know what I need to do, right?" Kagami looked up at Kagerou from her seated position. Now she was decisively on the path to redemption and she needed Toso to guide her but she also desperately required Kagerou's support. Whether or not Kagerou was sure that she could trust the seemingly new person suffering before her.

Kagami's sudden change had stalled Kagerou, quickly removing the smile that had only just managed to return. She'd stopped in her tracks, and prior to approaching, quickly cast a hand seal out in open view. The simple, modified sensory technique returned to Kagerou with Kagami's information. All vitals stable, but a sudden surge in power of her bloodline, a conclusion further supported by their new coloration. It was a given that she couldn't be sure if she could even trust this own information of hers. They were deep in the Sero and Kagami was a master enchantress.
However, Kagerou stepped forwards regardless. Five years. Over five years of facing the Sero every year and stepping into what she already half expected to be a web of lies wasn't something new to Kagerou. If this was truth, then Kagerou couldn't ignore such a strong plea for help. If this was an illusion, then Kagerou couldn't take her chances of ignoring someone in need of help and regret her choice later. From Kagerou's sensory technique all the way to the emotions that welled up in Kagami's very words, Kagerou could find nothing wrong with this reality other than the suddenness of the change. If the advanced doujutsu, which was a mystery to Kagerou, had amped Kagami's power to this stage, then Kagerou could only accept defeat and fall to the illusion. Hopefully, in such a case, Kagami liked her boobs too much to off her.
By the time Kagami looked up, Kagerou would be kneeling besides her. In the enchantress's state of weakness, she had found an opening to lightly grip her wrist and quickly check her pulse. The warm, soft feeling of flesh beneath her fingers, pulsing with the steady beat of the veins beneath the skin. Kagerou's own concerned, confused, and yet ultimately steady emotions in these circumstances. These details, the kunoichi registered while still listening to what Kagami had to say.
Looking up into those lost eyes, Kagerou had to admit that she was inclined to hug and comfort Kagami. However, out of caution and some respect for Kagami's personal space she held back. Instead, she gave a simple smile and limited physical contact to one hand on Kagami's wrist and one hand tucking the loose strands of Kagami's hair behind the ear. For the moment, Kagerou decided to hear out more of Kagami, so speaking softly she rationally advised, "How much do you think an Arashikage can help an internationally wanted criminal?" while keeping her eyes steady on Kagami's and all of the myriad lights that reflected off of it. Her presence was soothing to her and she also concentrated on her breathing to calm down further to think rationally. After many minutes, she was finally ready to think this through. "Not much. I know that I need to non-lethally resist arrest. The moment I turn myself over they'll put my head on a spike. As a mother, I can't let that happen." She needed to live on with her guilt for Satoshi's benefit and well being. Before she gained motherhood she would have accepted her execution. "All I can think to do is pay my reparations to the villages and find a way to keep my son safe if anything happens to me in the process. Naoki can care for and protect him in the short term, but it would be unfair to force both of them into that kind of life for my mistakes." Kagami continued to unravel every logistical problem. She was practically staring into the whirlpool of her sins. "It's going to take me paying for what I've done for the world to move on from Kogarashi. That'll probably result in my death one way or another. If that happens my blameless child will need the Arashikage's protection." She wiped the tears from her new eyes as she reasoned the only way forward. If Toso gave her assurances that her son would be safe in Arashigakure then she would do what needed to be done to help the villages from the outside.

"She has a kid?" the question tore through Kagerou's head, even more of a bombshell than hearing how chummy she was with Toso. It was news to her, despite her unrippled appearance. Alright, Kagami had a kid. No one said that she couldn't. Likewise, no one said that Toso and Kagami couldn't be buddies. You know, minus the literal war Kagami brought to the village Toso was supposed to protect and serve, but well... The reason she was less surprised that the Arashikage befriended what should have literally been his sworn enemy was because Kagerou found it surprisingly easy to imagine. Kagami promised to turn over a new leaf, perhaps because of this child, and Toso chose to give her a chance, fake her death, and possibly even assist her escape. Then, if she attempted contact with him shortly after, Kagerou knew he would have been unable to say no. That man seriously needed to learn how to say no.
Kagerou nodded her way through what Kagami had to say. It was depressing, and one could only get the impression of a cornered animal from the way she spoke, but it was also all true. Kagerou still did not think this change natural, the vivid eyes that gleamed through the strands of blue hair were a constant reminder, but this kind of resolve and these sorts of plans were not something that could be thought of in mere moments. Kagami, even as her first chaotic self, had been considering this sort of path long and hard. Perhaps she genuinely felt this way. Perhaps she had carefully orchestrated this trap to pull in suckers like Kagerou.
Skin: warm, no anomalies. Pulse: even, no anomalies. Through the fingers Kagerou had on Kagami's wrist, she could feel the unmistakable workings of the person of interest's body, even down, and in the details, she found no mistakes. If even this much showed nothing wrong, not an inaccuracy in Kagami's biological rhythm or any signs that she was lying, then the only other thing she could do was cast a sensory technique to pick up if she was in a genjutsu. Kagerou allowed her guard to drop slightly.
"I don't know if you can ever find peace through forgiveness, but perhaps through forgetfulness," Kagerou put in her two cents, focusing on what she did know in this strange mess, "However, no one knows about your son. If we can hide his traces to you, then he could lead a peaceful life." She was offering advice, but she didn't even know her side, much less position, in all of this. Obviously, not the side that wanted to kill Kagami, but could she say she was on Kagami's side? That was difficult to say right now.
It was inappropriate, Kagerou knew. She should not be interrupting Kagami's greater worries with her own small questions, but she felt like she needed an answer to this question at least. A little out of the blue, with her hand still holding Kagami's hand, Kagerou looked Kagami in the eyes and asked, "But Kagami, why the sudden change in heart? And what are those eyes?". __ It was true that Kagami needed desperately to find a way to distance Satoshi from herself. He would almost certainly need to be adopted by another family. The idea of another person raising her son was yet another dagger in her heart, but it seemed like a necessity for his safety and quality of life. "The world will never forget Kogarashi. Not in this lifetime, at least." She responded quickly and woefully. When Kagerou asked her questions she raised an eyebrow before creating a small mirror in one of her hands. It was shocking that her eyes were now blood red with green lines. "I...don't know." She examined them and it was clear that she still had her Sakkakugan. The eyes were the same feeling but somehow stronger. It was then that she remembered what Evergreen told her. It took her a long pause to reason through the various possibilities as she stared pensively into the mirror. "Before we attacked Arashigakure, Evergreen told me that there was a greater power in my eyes that I needed to discover. That must be what these are." She did not know the name of such eyes as knowledge of the Sakkakugan's evolution was lost across the long years until Evergreen brought them back. She would need to learn more about them on another occasion. "I remember that the reason I came here was because of my powerful connection to the Sero. I thought that it would help me awaken the power Evergreen told me was dormant. It looks like I succeeded. But the Kagami Hari you interacted with before feels disconnected from me. She's like a mirrored image, the opposite but the same. Does that make sense?" What she was going through with her opposite ego taking over was impossible for her to adequately describe.

A greater power in the eyes... Kagerou could only assume that meant that Kagami's doujutsu, the Sakkakugan, also had a second form to it. It wasn't a far fetched answer. In fact, it made more sense for it to have one than not, when the two other known doujutsus also had their own secondary forms. Kagerou simply nodded to the revelation, and asked no more about it. Any more, and she was afraid she would be prying too much.

I would have expected it to bring out something... darker... but perhaps that was merely a misconception of our understanding of the doujutsu. Rather than an evil force, it merely brings out a persona that is opposite of its bearer... Or perhaps I'm overthinking it and this is just random." Kagerou quickly corrected herself. Kagami had been the one to describe her alter ego as a mirror image first, but that didn't prevent Kagerou from feeling uncomfortable at the implications of suggesting that this current, undoubtedly good Kagami was a mirror image. That would mean the original Kagami was rightly considered "evil." It wasn't right to label an individual as such.
Still no signs of a lie. After going this far, Kagerou couldn't find any good reason to continue observing with such scrutiny. The medic gently lifted her hand off of Kagami's and stood up before extending a hand for Kagami to take.
She would no longer scrutinize, but that did not stop Kagerou from gently observing Kagami. "... You have a hard path in front of you, but I would like to get to know you more, Kagami. All of you, the you here and the you from before," Kagerou admitted as her eyes observed the small details, "and personally, I'm of the mind that the less hate there is in the world, the better. If you really, both parts of you, don't desire to cause any further harm to others, then I don't mind helping you." If she thought about, even the "dark Kagami" earlier showed no intent to harm her.
War criminal? Well, yes, that did put a damper on starting any sort of friendship. However, Kagerou really couldn't put up a genuine antagonistic front for long. [30 sentences]
__ Kagami took Kagerou's hand and rose to her feet in front of her. She allowed the mirror in her hands to shatter onto the floor without cutting her hand. What Kagerou was saying about the Sakkakugan rang true to her. It was a very misunderstood dojutsu which led to the stigmas associated with it. However, when she stated that she wanted to learn more about the old her she shuttered. "I don't want you to know more of her. I can't go back to that mindset." Kagami was resolved that she was going to do whatever possible to keep her eyes from reverting. "By the way, I'm sorry for what I was saying earlier. Who you are on the inside is more important." She gave her a gentle smile before looking around curiously. She was uncertain of what to do next at the Sero. Surely they still had a mission of some sort to complete but she was certainly not paying much attention to whatever the instructions were earlier for two aforementioned reasons. Even though the path before her was going to be a challenge it was better than wallowing in her guilt. She rubbed her eyes one final time before looking at Kagerou for direction. "So, what's next?" She rocked back and forth anxiously on her heels with a smile on her face waiting for the next task.

In Kagerou's opinion, Kagami's choice was not the healthy one. Attempting to suppress and ignore what was part of oneself sounded like it would only lead to an eventual meltdown. If not that, then at the very least, just how long will Kagami be able to hold this advanced stage two of her doujutsu? Avoidance was only a short-term solution.
However, who was Kagerou to say anything about this matter to Kagami? It wasn't like she knew her, and what little she did know of her only supported the argument that the dark Kagami must never see the light. Keeping her position in mind, she kept quiet on the matter.
Kagami's anxious smile was reciprocated with a soothing smile from Kagerou. "Don't worry, it didn't really bother me," Kagerou assured, nodding at Kagami then turning her head around to survey her surroundings after speaking. The Kagami from earlier had only been interested in her physical self. Such shallow attraction didn't affect Kagerou much at all. Though, she had treated it as valuable information about someone she knew so little about.
The answer to Kagami's question took a little longer to answer. They were so deep down already, this far down the roots, they could quite possibly be close to the core of the Sero. What Kagerou would give to be able to extract a sample from there...
She mentally shook her head, an action she refrained from showing outside of her mind. No, who knew how much time had passed, and since entering the roots, she had lost all contact with the other group, so she didn't know if they had succeeded. The mission had to take priority.
"We need to reach the kage's office. If it's like the last time, a portal should appear there that we need to seal off," Kagerou explained as she considered which direction to go in, before turning back to Kagami and asking with complete seriousness, "Do you happen to know a genjutsu that makes someone think they found the right way to their destination?". __ Kagami tapped her chin and mentally examined her vast roladex of genjutsu knowledge. "There are several genjutsu that change paths and confuse people. That could make them think they're going the right way when they aren't. Is that what you mean?" She humbly asked for additional clarification as she pondered further possibilities. She desperately wanted to be helpful to Kagerou because she had been so supportive of Kagami despite her horrible reputation. Kagami felt Isobu as her mind filled with questions about the portal. It was clear that the sanbi was not comfortable with returning to its former prison or at least the place that the demon's chakra fueled.

"Yes," Kagerou nodded in affirmation as she pointed at herself with, "That should do. Please use that genjutsu on me and make me think I found the right way out." Showing a nonchalant smile, she added, "Sometimes in this village, illusions become reality and reality illusions. I'm not sure if this will work, but I think it's worth a shot." She had, earlier, explained this very phenomenon to Kagami. Though, she wasn't sure if Kagami remembered. [6 sentences]
__ Kagami laughed a little at Kagerou's request. "Sorry, I don't think anyone's ever asked me to put them under a genjutsu before. Usually it happens without their permission." She then thought more deeply about what Kagerou was saying and had somewhat of an ephiphany. "Maybe...I could have Isobu cast it for me while my cloak is active. His chakra might be able to stir this place up even more." Without hesitation she allowed sea-green chakra to cover her body as three tails manifested. There was now a clear disruption in the energy of the Sero surrounding them but how that would manifest was yet to be seen. She then formed a tiger handseal directly in front of Kagerou's eyes. Isobu used his demonic chakra to cast and empower the illusion. It was the sly mind effect enchantment and would change the world around her very discretely. Kagami was then prepared to follow after Kagerou wherever she ended up going.

A thoughtful smile. "You're right, most people don't ask for a genjutsu to be cast on them, but this is the Sero. Sense and nonsense often have no meaning in these events," Kagerou reasoned, if it could be said as such. She nodded in agreement to Kagami's idea, and without offering resistance, allowed the genjutsu to fall into place upon her mind.
The way out. She wanted to find the way out of this labyrinth of roots and into the main area of the Sero. Kagerou prepared to cast a sensory technique like when she was searching for Kagami before. However, before even that, Kagami's suspicions about the Isobu having an effect on the Sero proved true. The roots some ways down the path groaned and shifted. It wasn't anything big, and earlier, they had frequently moved in this same manner. This time, however, it sounded oddly promising in an inexplicable way. Grasping the feeling without hesitation, Kagerou moved forwards.
The genjutsu had been cast on Kagerou, but its trickery became reality, changing what should originally have been merely a trick of the mind into a reality, and Kagami, following behind Kagerou, was in perfect position to see illusion become reality in real-time. What had previously been infrequently alterations in the path now happened at nearly every turn, sometimes even when Kagerou just so happened to turn her head in the wrong direction. Their way would curve and change to lead them along the journey Kagerou felt like they were going on. She would turn into what seemed like a solid wall, and an opening would create itself as she walked through. Kagerou would turn to look down the wrong path at an intersection and, evidently, it didn't exist in her head, so the now nonexistent path would close up. With each change, of course, the Sero could be heard, loud and clear.
To Kagerou, however it had been awfully quiet, and after what felt like quite some time walking, she commented, "It sure is quiet, huh?". The one entrapped in the illusion, she did not see how the Sero shifted and changed to make it reality. At the same time, however, she had noticed that something was strange, "Though, it doesn't make sense to me that we've been continuing down this way for so far without seeing any splits in the path. Tell me, have we really passed no intersections?". She seemed calm about it all, including how she, under this genjutsu, literally had no choice in where she went other than believing that it was taking her the way out.
As if on cue, though, a door, a worn down but man-made door, finally appeared in front of Kagerou and Kagami, signalling the exit out of the labyrinth. Kagerou held the door open for Kagami while waiting for her answer and quietly kai'd herself out of the genjutsu to see for herself that they had really made it out. Yes, past the door, there was a stairway that led up and, eventually after going through a few more eerily silent rooms and stairways, they would easily make it to the Sero's ground floor. The trip up the Sero proved harrowing, mind-bending, but due to the special flavor of the duo's personalities, all doable. Kagerou was accustomed, and had already switched her mind to blend reality with illusion, accepting both and neither as truth. Kagami was in her element, and didn't simply switch, but fully reveled in the chaos. However, her change of heart remained true, that much could be seen in the travel up. When violence reigned and blood was spilled, the heartless Kagami was never seen. She even dropped to one knee at one point to help up a half-conscious Kagerou that had collapsed after taking a nasty attack and keep Kagerou conscious as the medic healed her own wounds. Trust was difficult to earn, but Kagerou had always easily given friendship and before long, she was treating Kagami as a friend.
They finally reached the Mizukage's office in the Sero's canopy with two of the artifacts. Due to their detour down to the roots, the second group was already present and waiting. All wearing masks, they nodded curtly at Kagerou and offered few words, all professional and business-like. Together, the combined group entered the inner room of the office.
"This time wasn't so bad," one of the masked commented. Another added, "Yes, we still have a lot of time," as he stared out at the darkening but still clear windows. "In that case," Kagerou suggested, "This room will be the most dangerous place. The rest of you should wait outside."
No arguments were given or any admonishments that Kagerou should care for her safety as well. There was merely a quiet stare for a few seconds as they waited for Kagerou to change her mind before the first nodded and left, the rest following. Kagami, whether she wanted to leave, would be stopped by Kagerou, "Except you, you can stay," who had figured out by now that Kagami wanted to learn something from her experience her, learn and bring it back to her, "I don't know if what you see will help you or interest you, but if you'd like, the main show will be in here."
Kagerou smiled and winked playfully, trying to keep her own spirits up. In contrast to her casual expression, her hand loosened smoothly and she moved with the care of a soldier, gathering the artifacts and placing them onto the various sigils on the door. The items reacted, unlocking the entrance to... a vast void. She stepped in, fearing what she would find, but using that fear rather than letting it hold her back.
It would be Kagami's choice to follow Kagerou or wait...
What was certain, however, was that all parties that entered would safely leave the void, physically at least. The door would close behind them, lock, and then fade from existence after turning into a great whirlpool of darkness and psychedelic colors, literally sucking the strangeness out of Kirigakure. The village would return to normal, and a few small moments given to enjoy the brief respite before a great groan sounded from the two great gates of the village. It was their cue to leave lest they be trapped within Kiri until it opened again, so with all haste, the party left. [28 sentences]
