tab“I’m sure yer fine.” Thresher turned to speak to Miyuki as they walked. Something in her gut told her to console her girlfriend, even if she hadn’t noticed the brunette adjusting her clothes. The Jonin knew how much of a worrier Miyuki could be, even before the artist became Kage. So Thresher reached out and took Miyuki’s hand in her own, away from her clothes so she’d stop fidgeting. “Pa knows wha’ he’s about, an’ not one t’judge wha’ others’re about. Jus be yerself and I know he’ll take a likin’ t’ya.” The Swordsman stopped and suddenly pulled the artist so that she was pressed close to the Hoshigaki’s chest. Thresher smirked down to her girlfriend, completely ignoring any boundaries between Kage and Jonin. It was just Thresher and Miyuki, at least as far as the former was concerned, as she held her lover close and kissed the top of her head. “I know I did.” She added tenderly.
A few minutes after their moment, the duo would reach the Academy of Heiwajima. Much smaller than the school in Arashi, the entrance was a smaller gateway in a wooden arch that led to a wide open training area. In the yard were a couple dozen training dummies with makeshift practice weapons strewn about. The owners, small children with differing animal features, were all piled together. They all seemed to be wrestling a giant of a man that dwarfed even Thresher. With his tan skin and no apparent shark-like features, the only visible relation to Thresher was his size and sharp teeth. But his laugh, loud and distinct, made it known to Miyuki just where Thresher’s father was under the pile of struggling students. “‘Ey Pa!” Thresher yelled which brought an instant stop to the playfighting. The man blinked and looked up at Miyuki and Thresher from his place on the ground with mild confusion before realization dawned on him.
“Thresher!” He exclaimed back with a toothy smile. He rose to his feet, gently removing academy students from him one at a time. Sha Isonade stood a few inches over eight feet tall, even making Thresher look normal sized. Once he’d removed himself from the pile of wrestling students and dismissed them, he grabbed his daughter into a hug that made her squeak air from her lungs. “Didn’t think you’d be back from your pilgrimage so soon!” He continued, swinging her around like a limp doll much to the shinobi’s discomfort. “And who’s this you brought with you?” He asked as he finally placed his daughter back on her feet.
Thresher had to let Miyuki introduce herself as she recovered from the dizzying rib crushing her father subjected her to. She merely limped back to her girlfriend and put her arm around the artists shoulders while gently rubbing her own side with her free hand.

Miyuki took comfort in what Thresher had to say, but she was naturally still doubtful and worrying. After all, it was what she did best. Following Thresher only to find her dad wrestling a bunch of children - who then stopped to swing Thresher around like she was merely nothing - did not heal her fizzled nerves. In fact, it took far too long for her to find her voice, and she hadn't been able to properly think all the while.
"M-miyuki," she squeaked out as she looked at the towering shark man. She brought her hand up to her head to rub at it nervously, but, feeling the lack of a hat, she stood up straight and squared her shoulders. "Miyuki Ukyo, Shadow of the Storm. But today, I am Thresher's travel partner. And I hear that you're quite a celebrity around these parts," she said, showing too many teeth, perhaps, with her overconfident grin. She stuck her hand out without thinking, then left it hanging out as she feared his mighty grip might hurt her more delicate hands.

tab“Shadow of the storm…” Sha repeated quietly, slowly, to himself with a puzzled look on his face. Then after a beat a look of realization dawned on his face “Oh! The Arashikage, welcome to the village of Heiwajima! Please, make yours;f at home!” The giant of a man leaned down to shake Miyuki’s hand with surprising care, a farcry to how easily he crunched Thresher’s ribs. “It’s nice to meet you!” Sha added with a grin and placed his hands on his hips. A confident stance that seemed to come as natural to him as breathing. “Can’t say I’m not honored, but what’s a Kage like yourself doing hanging around my punk kid?” Thresher didn’t respond to the ribbing, not verbally anyway. She just quietly reached over and took Miyuki’s hand in her, intertwining their fingers together plainly so her father could see.
Sha’s face lit up once he realized what that meant, his eyes seemingly filled with stars. Suddenly he was upon the two of them, squeezing Miyuki and Thresher into one of his famous shark hugs. “That’s amazing news!” He exclaimed, spinning the two women around in his arms. “My daughter leaves home and comes back dating a Kage, I’d expect nothing less! And is that the Kabutowari on your back?! Oh well, nobody’s perfect.” Sha eventually put the two of them down, leaving Thresher to rub her aching back. “A feast!” The giant declared triumphantly. “To welcome you both home!”
“Pa, I don’ think tha’ tha’s necessary.” Thresher started, only to be met with a dismissive wave from her father.
“I’ll hear nothing of the sort.” Sha insisted. “You and I both know when a kid comes back home, their family holds a feast for them. It just so happens that the village is your family, ‘cause it takes a village to raise a child after all.” Thresher’s father turned to Miyuki then. “Oh! She probably didn’t tell you. We have a tradition of sending our young out on a pilgrimage around the world. So that they can learn about it and come back with a wide array of knowledge and strengths.” He explained. “As a way to make sure the next generation is more learned and stronger than the ones before it. Now, I insist you join us for dinner, Miyuki.”

When Thresher intertwined their hands and there was a moment between the action and her father's reaction, Miyuki tensed so slightly she was sure only Thresher would notice. She exhaled softly when his reaction was positive, and her face even broke into a smile. She had a lot of questions about his reaction to the kabutowari, but she didn't have an opportunity to ask about it.
"Thresher has learned a lot and she is one of my strongest shinobi. I would love to stay for this celebration." Miyuki admired the philosophy of improving the next generation. Belatedly, she answered the question of what she was doing with Thresher. "I have always been impressed by her strength and resilience. She has always been so much more confident in her abilities than I ever was. I was drawn to her because she was living life in a way that I had only ever thought about. She makes me more adventurous. She helps me remember that life exists outside of still paintings and novels. If I stop to recollect everything I have seen, I will miss out on seeing so much more."
She looked to Thresher, and though her eyes were soft, she was examining her face closely as if it could reveal something she wasn't seeing already. There might have been a little tension between Thresher and her father, but it could have just been a bit of bashfulness about a whole feast for the two of them. It could have been something deeper, though. Miyuki didn't want to overthink things but she tried to keep herself attuned to the way Thresher was feeling. With her eyes, she hoped, she told Thresher that she was here for her and nobody else. If Thresher wanted to call this thing quits, she was more than willing.

tab“I’m impressed that this knucklehead has learned anything!” Sha replied with a booming laugh. “She was always so stubborn when she was younger! Always wanting to be the strongest, yeah? Tell me something.” The giant Hoshigaki leaned into Miyuki, hiding his mouth with his hand, despite his words being loud enough to hear anyway. “Does she still do that thing where she acts like a big predator to seem tough?”
“Pa!” Thresher snapped. She lunged at her father, wrapping her arm around his neck to put him in a headlock. Despite her growls in protest, Thresher was blushing like mad. “It’s s’posed t’ be an intimidation’ tactic! Make ‘em too scared t’ fight ya!” Sha reacted with more hearty laughter and Thresher slowly released him with a small smile on her face too. “Anyway, we’re not ‘ere fer very long, anyways. So we don’ need a whole-”
“-feast.” Hours later, a disgruntled Thresher was surrounded by the commotion of a large party. Sha hadn’t listened to his daughter’s complaints and set upon a town wide return party for his daughter. The meal hall was filled with friendly people, delicious food, and upbeat music. People were laughing and dancing or enjoying their meals with their families. And while Thresher was pouting, she was obviously tapping her fingers and foot in time to the music. Thresher looked to Miyuki and her lips spread into a meek smile. “I’ve never been on th’ recevin’ end of this. It’s really fun, but it’s embarrassin’.” The Hoshigaki girl’s smile became less shy and was replaced by her signature: wide, with lots of teeth. She slid her hand over the table and lightly gripped the hand of her Kage. “It is part o’ my culture though, an’ I’m glad t’be sharin’ wit’ ya, M’yuki.”

Miyuki smiled at Thresher's embarrassment, happy her girlfriend had such a good relationship with her father. Miyuki's parents weren't as lively, as they were both very prone to illness. She had put them up in the nicest home in Arashigakure after being Arashikage, so they could get the help they needed to maintain good health. She hadn't talked to them in so long, though, and it made her heart ache for something like this for herself.
The feast was nice. Miyuki was taking notes with her left hand, drawing with one inked finger on a scroll that was sprawled on her lap as Thresher squeezed the other. "You deserve it," she said earnestly. But that was pretty mushy, so she saved it with, "I hope something really cute and embarrassing happens to you after you withheld so much information about this place and the culture from me. I could have prepared for this," she teased, but her heart raced at Thresher's tender kindness anyways. She wanted to be prepared for the future, though, and to be able to prepare a culturally appropriate celebration in Arashigakure when Thresher's father came when Miyuki- No, it was too early to think about it just yet. She feared she'd give herself away if she indulged in thinking about it around Thresher -- the shark woman was a trained hunter, and while Oinin didn't train like ANBU in the art of interrogation or cold reading, she couldn't consider her secrets totally safe around the hunter-nin.

tab“Y’mean having an entire feast in yer name ain’t embarassin’ enough?” Thresher laughed. She gave Miyuki’s hand a small squeeze as she watched her girlfriend scribble on a scroll. Ever the quick study. Her always working mind was one of Thresher’s favorite qualities. Miyuki was always attentive and it showed the Hoshigaki that the artist cared deeply about those around her.
As much as Thresher put on that she hated the dinner, she watched the entire village with a small smile. It’d been a while since she’d been back home, but seeing everyone dancing and singing together made her feel like she’d never left. She even found herself humming along to the familiar tune of the song being sung.
“Here's a health to the company and one to my lass Let us drink and be merry all out of one glass Let us drink and be merry all grief to refrain For we may or might never all meet here again Here's a health to the dear lass that I love so well For her style and her beauty, sure none can excel There's a smile on her countenance as she sits on my knee There's no man in this wide world as happy as me”

Apparently a circle had formed for arm wrestling and they were trying to get the Hoshigaki in on the action. She gave Miyuki a swift kiss before sitting across from her next victim.
“She’s an energetic one, isn’t she?” Sha had appeared at Miyuki’s side, watching his daughter with a glint in his eye. “She’s surprisingly quiet, though. Hard to believe, I’m sure. She never liked to talk about herself, trying to learn about the people around her. My girl is studious, but you’d never guess from how boneheaded she is.” He turned to look down at Miyuki with a smile on his face. “You’ve been quiet yourself, Miyuki. Why don’t you tell me more about yourself? I can tell by the way you move your hand that you’re an artist. Care to tell me more about that?”

The smile on Miyuki's face was wiped away when Thresher prodded her about baby pictures. She hadn't talked about her family too much with Thresher beyond loving her late sister. But no, no one had her baby pictures. Her parents had fought hard and ultimately lost the battle with their memories, something heavily genetic in her particular sect of Ukyo, though there was much historical evidence to suggest Ukyo have commonly had threads of it, and the development of ink-based techniques was to create moving pictures to show older members of the clan what their life had been like. It was neither here nor there, but the sudden reminder shocked her system and put her back in her place. She didn't really belong here. What did she possibly know about family other than she failed to save them at every given opportunity?
Her neutral expression gave nothing away about the bitterness in her. She was so self-involved, however, that she jumped a little as Sha came to her side. His observations brought a smile to her face again, though it wasn't as genuine as it'd been before. She had definitely noticed such things about Thresher - there was nothing about the woman that didn't immediately call to Miyuki, that didn't beg her artist's eye to not just look but see - but only a few seemed to know how brilliant Thresher really was. "I am an artist, but not just someone familiar with a brush. As an Ukyo, I hold a special affinity not just for ink-based chakra, but for creating sustained three dimensional creatures. I get to treat the world and battlefield as my canvas." She laughed as Thresher continued to body everyone in arm wrestling. "It is the strength of people like your daughter that allow me the time and space I need to be strong. I could not do what I do without her."

Miyuki looked around as Sha mentioned they had a lot of artists. She hadn't pegged the culture to be one that appreciated the arts. Like Zaishin, she figured they savored the blade and the fight and little else beyond history or blood. "Your daughter honors the ways of the scholar," Miyuki finally said as she watched everyone's competition of strength. "She is the brightest hunter-nin I have at my disposal. She's an intelligent hunter, not just for her skills or reflexes, but because she's very capable of judging someone's fighting spirit and their likeliest action. Getting into someone's head like that is immensely valuable and not just for someone who hunts fugitives." Indeed, she had spent a lot of time working on getting into someone's head, so she could be the best prepared as a fighter and leader.
It was a daunting, exhausting task. It seemed to come naturally to Thresher, though Miyuki would never go so far as to belittle Thresher's accomplishments to nature or chance. "It is foolish to separate fighting and knowledge. It is important for our warriors to understand the world they are fighting for, and for our scholars to understand that our knowledge was not gained without bloodshed, that it cannot be pursued endlessly because it will only be done so unethically. And I value the duality of my people to identify as both and become both." The answer seemed cheap. She pursed her lips as she thought it through further.
"My people are undeniably diverse. Arashigakure has the most diverse population out of all of the other governments; not just purely in race, but in background, culture, language. Our strength is in this blending coexistence, but if I cannot unite the people of Arashigakure under our banner, under our unified identity, I believe the diversity will divide us to the point of debilitation." It was too much. It was too much to reveal to anyone, too vague to be helpful for him but too specific to be anything other than a betrayal of her village. Who was she to speak to her village's weaknesses, ever? Again, the dismay she felt was hidden with the same placating mask she always wore, even as her gaze fell on Thresher. Her internal conflict rested without a hint on her expression.

And even more than that to admit where it’s faults lie.” Sha looked out over the sea of people who lived in Heiwajima. “And it’s only natural to want to examine the weakest parts, whether it be in a weapon or in a society, because you want to make it the best thing it can be.” He shifted his gaze down to the younger Ukyo for a silent beat. “Right?” He wanted for an answer before he continued. Cheering would erupt from the crowd as Roa sat down across from Thresher, the Hoshigaki woman smirking with her teeth as she gripped the man’s hand and her biceps began to flex as they competed with their strength.
“Miyuki, I’ve been leading this village for a long time.” Thresher’s father continued. His words and tone were serious, but his mouth was turned up into a small smile. “The best lesson I ever learned about being in charge was to find the courage to let everyone in your care thrive in their own way, and grow at their own pace. It’s hard, giving up control like that. Especially when you only want the best for them, so you push them to do what you think is best. But I’ve found the best way to support your people is to grow into someone that can cover their flaws.”
There was a booming thud and the crowd cheered as Thresher slammed Roa’s arm to the table. “You’ll figure it out, you seem like a smart girl.” Sha clasped her giant hand on Miyuki’s shoulder supportively and smiled at her. Within moments of that, Thresher had jumped on top of the table she’d been sitting at.
“Alrigh’ old man! Come get yer whoopin’!” She snarled with a smirk as she jabbed her finger at her father.
“What, and risk injuring my shoulder before our fight?” Sha laughed, a deep sound that came from his belly. “No thanks, I’ll just have to take my lumps tomorrow.” A look washed over Thresher's face, but the exact emotion would be hard to read. Whatever it was, it wasn't good. The giant of a man reached down and grabbed his mug of alcohol from the table. “But as long as I have your attention! A toast! To Thresher, for coming back home from a long journey! And to Miyuki, the newest addition to our family!” The crowd all let out a cheer before downing their drinks in uniform.
The music in the background began to pick up volume just above talking level, and Thresher hopped down from the table and made her way back to Miyuki. “Care fer a dance, love?” She asked, extending her hand down to her girlfriend to help her up.
