Ironically, I discovered this guild and learned about the holiday on the 25th... and it was fairly late by then... so, with perhaps three hours of daylight left, I threw my towel around my shoulders and proceded to make up for lost time by marching around the yard like a mad person. Nobody noticed though, except my brother, who already knows I'm nuts, and my mom, who tried to get me to take it off.
Mom: What are you doing? Me: It's International Towel Day! Mom: Take it off, you look stupid. Me: No, I look cool and froody. Mom: Wha? Me: Hey, if the Star Wars fans can wait in line with plastic lightsabers, I can walk around wearing my towel!

xd I like your logic very much. ^_~
I started wearing the oversized towel, but it was a hot day, so I switched to a smaller one and wore it on my head. ^^

eccentrica So, it's May 25th now... last few years I tried to participate in Towel Day no one knew what day it was supposed to BE. Douglas Adams' birthday? deathday? The 42nd day of the year? 3rd thursday past the spring equinox? (joke on that last one, but you get the point)
towel day site Towel Day was intended to be a wake. A way of showing respect for the passing of this most hoopy frood. It was first slated for one week after his death, but that didn't give us nearly enough time to get the word out. So we moved it to two weeks after his death. This question also appears in the form, "But, why not 42 days after his death?" Again, it's all about timing, 42 days is a long time in the history of the Universe, so we were concerned that the enthusiasm would vaporize like a planet in the path of a Vogon Constructor Fleet. Some people still won't just give up, and ask "But, why not on Thursday, since that's when the trilogy begins? Well, we didn't think about that until the idea had already exploded across the Internet. I could never get the hang of Thursdays, anyway. If you have any other questions about why Towel Day is on May 25, instead of (insert date here), feel free to consult your Guide.
