I only use one type of pencil: the mechanical pencil. xD
with a 0.7 mm lead. ^^
About smudging... I guess I didn't really mind smudges because since it's a mechanical pencil, I don't leave much stains. I erase and draw and erase and draw. It's just my way of drawing I guess... Oh, and the paper I choose is always the type that doesn't ruin easily when you erase too much.
And yea... using a tablet helps loads too XD
