Emotive Hardcore.

Started in the underground DC area around 1985-86.

Rites of Spring, composed of members of popular punk rock bands.

Spawed emo, post emo, and hardcore by 1993.

Genre died about 1997.

Now the word is abused by "suicidal" 14 year olds that "hate" their life.

14 is old for "emo". I was thinking 11-13.

I once saw a 10-year-old... thing.

I thought the steryotypical emo was 17-16-15 ish

Nope Isel's right, the average age of people requesting to join is about 11-13 these days.
my fav band is emo and there all 23,23,25, and 28

But i think that bands are different.

What do bands have to do with the people that join?
I really don't think you listen to any Emo music.

Half my school are emo wannabees. It's so stupid how hard they try and in the end they can't be emo.

Topic: What does "emo" mean?

I think "Emo" means easily misunderstood, mysterious.

You really don't have to cut yourself to be emo. It's like stereotyping.
I'm emo...but that's because I like darkness, mysterious things, and anything black, (and yes i'm a bit emotional). So basically emo means anything from dark to mysterious. In my case anyways.

I think all emo is is being yourself but expressing strong emotions. You don't have to act or dress a certain way to be emo. you don't have to listen to a certain type of music. You're just a person who has strong emotions. Stereotypical people all ruin the meaning...that's just what I think...

To be completely clear, I read a report somewhere that emo doesn't really have a deffinite meaning. I know that it originated from around the DC area and such. But to be completely honest, nobody knows exactly what "emo" means. It can be a fashion, lifestyle(etc.) Whatever you believe. And that reason right there makes the definition confusing, yet, very interesting that you can have your own biased opinions on it. ^^

Emo means fan of Emotive Hardcore.
The same was as Punks are fans of Punk Rock and Goths are the fans of Goth Rock.
Funnly enough, Goth and EmoCore spawned out of Punk which carried on with the trend as using part of the name to lable their fans.
Emotive Hardocre has evolved from Introspective lyrics to Hardcore punk, to just the Introspective lyircs.
The Genre is still on going with bands such as: From Autumn To Ashes.

Wikipedia
Emo is a somewhat ambiguous slang term most frequently used to describe a fashion or subculture derived from hardcore punk fashion and its subculture. The slang term emo is best known for its fashion style[1] and attitude. Emo may describe this fashion or music, or a general emotive state (as in to "feel emo"). It is also, sometimes pejoratively, used to identify someone fitting a particular emo stereotype or category.

As the remaining indie emo bands entered the mainstream, newer bands began to emulate the more mainstream style, creating a style of music that has now earned the moniker emo within popular culture. Whereas, even in the past, the term emo was used to identify a wide variety of bands, the breadth of bands listed under today's emo is even more vast, leaving the term "emo" as more of a loose identifier than as a specific genre of music.
