You out an animal in front of a mirror and record their reactions. It's really a very crude test, but like I said, we can't mind read. -shrug-

She lay down on the grass,
Looking up at the sky,
thinking, it’s all she can do.
If she disappeared she would not be missed.
She will be gone just like everyone else.

Getting up from the grass,
she walks on the sand,
looking outward towards the sea.
She walks into the water high up above her knees.

If by animal you mean, living breathing creature, then yes. What else could there be? Plant? We're obviously not a plant. Just because we no longer live in the wilderness of a jungle, doesn't make us any less of an animal than a lion, dolphin, monkey, snake, or insect.

So, we have languages of our own, we build buildings that touch the sky, we kill and cook other animals. What part of that makes us more superior to any of them? Sure, we might be at a high part of the food chain, because we've developed weapons to kill almost any animal there is alive, but that doesn't make us superior. That just means our brains have developed in a way that other's have not. Other animals communicate with each other, and perhaps a dog's bark is its way of speaking to other dogs, just like they can't understand our language, we can't understand theirs. We live in a town built by ourselves, and they do too... Perhaps they didn't build it themselves, but they get along with what they have and they don't try to change things.

In reply to the tests performed on animals on self awareness: Do we know how other animal think? Some might just be so confused because they can recognize themselves in the mirror... If you didn't know what a mirror was and walked in front of it, would you be confused that there is someone just like you staring back at you and doing the same exact thing? It's scary. The animals don't know what the mirror is so they believe that it's a clone. As for passing, how does an animal pass the test? Does the animal have to think, "OMG!! I look so bootiful", or "I see me! Teehee".

On a note of what Norayr said: Sure we have an eternal soul and were made to resemble God, but how do we know this if we've never seen God? Have you seen him, because I sure as hell haven't. How do you know animals don't have Gods? What if you were an animal not in human form in your previous life? Don't forget it was the humans whom created the bible. And God, and all of religion. Perhaps you are religious and don;t believe this fact, but I do, even though I am Jewish. I'm not trying to change your opinion or any of that, this is simply my point of view, and my arguments to support it.

The waves softly hit her legs.
She looks at the sunset and its yellow-red hues
she walks into the sea, farther and farther,
opening her arms towards the wave.
The water is high up to her hips.
The wave comes towards her.
She looks at the wave with her arms stretched out;
the water starts to rage, the wave hits her body hard.
Then the water calms down. The water recedes,
then darkness falls, and all goes dark.
The sun goes down and the day is done.

I'm going to have to go into Science Mode on this! *Eyes glare as his eyes look weird, lol* Seeing that humans are the advanced and evolved form of the apes, we are still very vulnerable to most things that we consider as...Diseases. So yeah, we're as animals as we can get, I mean...Pollution, greed, selfishness, carelessness, and stupidity says it all, haha...

humans are animals.
we breath, eat, and do other things animals do.
our brains have just developed differently than other animals.
should we say that lions are superior to use because they could maul us to death?
or birds are superior because they can fly?
no, all animals have their own advantages in nature and ours was our brains, which lead us to where we are now.

we are animals because our bodies are pretty much the same in that we eat, sleep and multiply. as for being smarter then they are that's debatable because we have what we do now because we simply built on the inventions of others (just because i own a computer dose not mean i can built one from scratch).

Sugrie
If a creature feels pain and expresses emotion, even discretely, then it must be self-aware.

From wiki: "Self-awareness is the explicit understanding that one exists".

Maybe he is confused with self-actualization? Yay for the hierarchy of needs!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hierarchy_of_needs

But ja, we're animals. No different than any other living things. We just figured out fancy things like math and science. In a way, certain species of primates and dolphins are more intelligant than us. By not creating a society like ours there's no crime, murders, nuclear bombs, or pointless wars. Unless one dolphin steals another's fish, then we might have a slight problem... ninja

I agree with all points that you've said. But it isn't to be mistaken[for other people, not you Sugrie] that animals don't have societies.

thing thing that seperates us from the animals is standards and self-discipline

I say humans are animals. I mean, animal means: A living organism who is not a plant or fungi. So technicly humans are animals.

I do believe humans are animals. Very complex animals that think for themselves, but still animals none the less.

What would we be if not animals? Not like we're special, not like we're better than any other living species. In all senses of the word "better", we are the complete opposite. And another thing about this matter, a human is not an I but a We, humans are made up of millions of small, stupid animals and we seem to forget that often.

I think that my main issue with this whole concept is when we eat animals and they eat humans. If an animal eats or attacks a human, it is killed. If humans eat or hunts an animal, it is completely fine.

Furthering that, there is also cannibalism. We are all animals, so why can't we eat each other legally? Why can't I go down to the store and buy human thighs to put on the grill? Sure, we have ethics, and in general, animals of any type are not cannibals for different reasons.

NOTE: I am Vegan, and therefore rather biased about this.

NOTE: When I say animal, I am not including people. Easiest way to say non-human.

cause you're hot then you're cold
you're yes then you're no
you're in then you're out
you're up then you're down

yes, we are most definitely animals
animals are quite conscious of what is going on around them
even fish are conscious
the only difference between us and animals is that we have a bigger brain capacity
however, there are still some animals that have bigger brain capacities than others, for example, a tiger and a fish
