Someria smiled. "That's great! Is there anything I can do to help?" I've never met anyone who controls shadows, but how much worse is it than controlling dark fire?

Rin shook her head. "No, we're just keeping our eyes open. That's all we can do for now." She smiled and raised her hand to cast a shadow on the table. The shadow started to wave, without Rin's arm moving. "It's great for distractions and sending messages."

Someria gasped. Then she laughed. "Awesome! Let me show you something." She summoned a flame and made it dance with the shadow. "I like doing that sort of thing. It makes my bad magic seem... less bad, you know?"

Rin smiled. "There's no such thing as bad magic, just badly used magic. It wasn't your fault anyway."

Someria laughed nervously. "You haven't seen my badly used magic then. The only magic that I have that I don't hate is my power to change appearances. And even that's been missused... My magic is not good. I can assure you of that."

Rin smiled sadly. "Did you know Thia can do this too? The shadow part at least... She used to drag people into the shadow and torture them. I use it for distractions and since I showed her how I use the magic, she hasn't tortured anyone else."

Someria shook her head. "I didn't know that... I don't know how to use my aggressive magic in a good way. There isn't a good way to burn things. To drown people. To cause really horrible things to happen to people you barely know. I just want my magic to go away. I can't do good magic. I've tried it. It doesn't work for me."

Rin tilted her head. "Have you tried to start a campfire on a snowy summit? Or bring water to a thirsty man in a desert? There's a good and a bad side to each ability, it's up to the user to choose which side to use." She moved the shadow and made it look like a cat's shadow, making the flame look through one of it's eyes. "This is a fun way of using magic. Like to entertain people who have nothing better to do."

Someria smiled wryly. "I would, except that my magic has really horrible properties. For example, my fire explodes on contact with water. My water only comes in floods. I can't control all of this power."

Rin thought. "Hmm... Maybe your abilities are so strong and uncontrollable because you haven't practiced using your more minor abilities..." She shifted the shadow into a bird shape. "I practiced this lot so I can make a fly's shadow or a human's. Maybe you just need practice?"

Someria laughed under her breath. "I doubt that. When I didn't have practice, I couldn't even get a fire to start with a tinderbox. Now... I can't let more than a drop of magic go without burning an entire building with a flick of my index finger." Then Someria suddenly lowered her voice so that only Rin could possibly hear her. "I remember... Dalier giving me this poisonous root that increases magical ability. I was always able to do magic. Except... I think that root corrupted me. I just want things back to the way they were. Before I met Dalier."

Rin's ears perked up. "A root? Was it a dark brown or a greenish brown, twisted root? If it was I might know what kind it was..." She seemed to be lost in thought. She stood up and smiled. "Come on, I think I have a book that could help you."

Someria concentrated to remember. "I don't know. I think... he crushed the root so that I couldn't see what color it was. But... you can really help me?"

Rin smiled. "That depends on how much you remember about that root. Like the taste or color. And if I can find the counter to it." She walked toward the exit. "Come on! That book might really help." She led the way to her dorm.

Someria followed quickly. I might really be freed of this horror? She thought for a moment and said, "It was bitter. The drink, at least, was really bitter. The color... I think it was greenish-blue with the brew added to enhance its power. I know it was brew because he gave it to me in a huge mug and made me take a mugful every day for a week. I try to block those memories now..."
