Earthquakes may be bad, but snow is even worse! I mean snow KILLS people, and there's little you can do about it! At least with Earthquakes you can do stuff to make sure your house will be protected an stuffies....

I can Iceskate on my street. It's pretty bad with the ice right now because it's too cold to melt with salt. So basically we all get to play who's brakes give out first when going to school/work. So far I've been fine but the house at the end of the street has solid concrete poles being installed in front of its lawn.

O.o I'd MUCH rather be stuck in a snowstorm than hit by an 8.0 quake...especially here on the coast, where such a quake would likely be followed by a cute little tsunami... gonk @ Giga - Are tire chains legal in Utah? I forget... ninja

Back in the Earthquake of '89 my little island city of alameda survived quite nicely. Heck our apartment building didn't even take any damage! There's things you can do to earthquake-proof buildings, bridges, etc. There's no way to snow storm proof your house. I mean yeah if the earthquake is at an area strong enough to split open the Earth you'd be screwed, but if it was just strong shaking...that can be defeated. twisted

Tire chains aren't just legal, there required on most cars. You can be pulled over for driving in the snow without having chains on your tires. But there must be snow on the road, it must be snowing, and at least one other person had to get in a fiery wreck earlier.

Why not? If people can live in the Himalayas, then the technology to withstand a snowstorm must surely exist... ninja Thanks, Giga - I was always iffy on the chain laws there - in NC, it used to be illegal to use them - ever.

The problem with Utah is since we live so high in elevation we always get snow. And because we are one of the main passes through the rocky mountains we have to establish strict chain rules or the state could get a bad reputation as Winter crash hell.
Although we are pretty close to it considering how many people do crash.

Yeah, but you could totally get trapped inside a snowstorm for a VERY long time. Once an Earthquake hits, that's it. It's all over and done with. Just one quick shot and it's gone. A snowstorm can hit for DAYS, trapping you inside...

Yeah - and the devastation? If your whole village/town/city was just flattened in an earthquake, it's not all over quickly...
...and you can see a snowstorm coming - time to stock up, make preparations, get out of town...an earthquake strikes without warning: you might not appreciate an earthquake if you happened to be on top of a tall ladder at the time... xd
