Are you serious? Are you blocking that memory, or are you just uninformed? The worst-hit area during that quake was Alameda - the highway that collapsed, killing nearly 50 people, was in Alameda...the county reported $1.5 Billion in damages...
I can't recall the last snowstorm that resulted in one and a half billion in damages... wink

We have bridges and tunnels...but NO highways. That'd be Oakland or SF. Also that's the only real Earthquake in over a decade that's been powerful enough to cause any real damage. Snowstorms kill lots of people and do a lot of damage stuff all the time I'm sure....

Now who's ignorant?
During that last storm when schools actually where closed, and many people had to walk home because there cars where stuck, caused: One black out, no deaths, and about 20k worth of overpriced towing expenses.
Of course in Utah we are overdue for a ~8.5 earthquake for some time. My house is close to the fault, so when it hits and I'm home, I'm probably going to die =D.

I was not ignorant, just overestimating - I was thinking along the lines of Alameda County, not just the City of Alameda. After checking the map, it's no wonder you had little damage - it's just a tiny island with a few streets. That doesn't mean that the earthquake was insignificant, just that your town is. ...and your final line of "I'm sure" is an unsupported supposition, and not a valid point of debate. One cannot counter fact with supposition... wink

Alameda isn't significent! We had The Matrix filmed here, not to mention it STILL hit us pretty bad. Our island is miles across, and we have over 70k people living here. Heck our pool ejected a whole bunch of pool water. I'm just saying that Alameda knew how to better prepare for Earthquakes. Our tunnels got shook quite a bit, but we only had minor damage. Not to mention our smaller solid steel draw bridge took little to no damage as well.
If you have the bottom of your building on rollers, then your building should survive earthquakes pretty well. The problem is when you have a super solid foundation which won't let you bend with the Earthquake, thus it can break apart.
Before you start pointing fingers at Earthquakes just look at snowstorm damage and kills. I mean those things happen EVERY YEAR, while our Earthquakes happen less then every decade blaugh

Ayanami Rei First Child I'm just saying that Alameda knew how to better prepare for Earthquakes. So, you're saying that people who live in areas prone to certain hazards learn how to prepare for them? Like people who live in areas where there are snowstorms? xd Quote: If you have the bottom of your building on rollers, then your building should survive earthquakes pretty well. Thanks for that little lesson in building design - what that has to do with the topic at hand, well... rolleyes Quote: Before you start pointing fingers at Earthquakes just look at snowstorm damage and kills. ...and these would be found where? See? Snowstorm damage is so minuscule, it is rarely documented! ninja

I don't think it's that miniscule. It causes car wrecks and other stuff. It's just not on the massive scale as earthquakes. My point is, is that it's a lot of smaller stuff that adds up to big stuff.
Meh there was still a lot that people didn't do to prepare for that Earthquake.
There IS no topic at hand! This place went off-topic long ago....
...That reminds me...I should mention to Uke-chan to dress you like Sailor Moon when I see her again twisted heart
