"Who's-" It took Will a moment to realize exactly what Amelia meant. Adrian, he was gone. It hurt a little, but the sense of despair was replaced by the realization that they were without a leader. The rest of the men couldn't know, at least not yet, not while victory was so close for them. Will deflected the news and instead focused on Amelia's injury. "Get to medical and have them look at your arm. In-" Will paused and looked down at his shadow. Adrian had always promoted older ways of getting things done, ways that didn't involve technology. It was Adrian's father who had been a bigger fan of machines. Because of Adrian, Will could tell the time based on the position of his shadow. "two minutes..." There was a moment, a brief moment where it seemed that Will would panic, instead he grabbed his radio and asked for a status report on the evacuation. He was ready to end it just as Adrian had been, but Will lacked the same willingness to kill the people who refused to leave the building.

Amelia glanced down at her arm almost as if she had forgotten about it, almost as if it was someone else’s arm. Nothing but fire and numbness radiated from the limb hanging from her shoulder. She tried to move her fingers only to get no response from the red painted digits. It wasn’t important right now anyway. They had to destroy Sybil. She had to finish Adrian’s last orders and so she relieved Will didn’t try to force her to go straight to the medics like the guy who had reluctantly showed her where Will was standing. “You have to tell them before Sybil does.” She insisted. Certainly the machine was working on sending out the broadcast as they spoke. It only waited this long to remove the body of the President.
A voice came over the radio from the evacuation team. According to the scans the building was about 60% evacuated, however Sybil had gone homicidal. The machines were going after civilians and rebel alike. Those remaining in the building either still believed in Sybil, or were too frightened to venture out and brave the battle ground.

"Then go spread word, I have to be here." Will would not be the man to tell the Resistance that Sybil had killed another of their leaders just before the Tower fell. They needed a victory before they could hear the news. Knowing that, and know the time had passed Will gave the order, it was a far more merciful one that Adrian would have given. "Open fire on the Tower! Aim for the top!" Will knew it risked casualties but had given the order regardless. Adrian's timetable was up, the people had their chance to flee and even now Will was giving them a chance to get out of the building. There would be a one minutes interval between each volley of cannon fire and with each minute, they would destroy another floor of the tower. With the order given the tanks opened fire. The rebels positioned on the rooftops surrounding the tower held theirs. They only had so many rocket and they were saving them for the final strikes. If the people did not leave, they would die. "Keep me updated on the evacuation effort." Will ordered over the radio. He was not their leader but they did not yet know that. They had not yet divided into civil war. Even if Sybil broadcast the message before Will told the rebels, the Tower would fall. They united in mind on that one matter, the Tower was to be destroyed. Still Will felt wrong... he knew it was wrong to lie, and he knew he didn't have to tell them in person he knew the one way to tell them all. "The Director has fallen." Will spoke softly over the radio and as he feared, everything came to a halt. The tanks ceased fire, the men turned to look towards him and all was quiet.

“Will….” Amelia began softly, but let the words die as he gave the order to fire on the Tower. Who was she to tell them Adrian was gone, even if she had the means to do so? Most of them didn’t know her and those who did only knew her as the one who fought with Adrian all the time. “Will!” She exclaimed, snatching the radio from him with her good arm, pressing down the button. “Don’t stop fighting; don’t let everything you’ve worked for be in vain! The Director gave everything to get you here today, to free us from the oppressive rule of the machines. He gave me his final words knowing he would not walk away from this battle, knowing we could defeat Sybil and rebuild a better world without him. He knew you could do it, so let’s finish what he and his father started.” She weakly held the radio out to Will. Pain started to flare up in her arm, the earlier adrenaline from her escape wearing off. It had crept up on her slowly during her plea to the rebels to keep fighting until when she felt nauseous from it. A cold sweat broke out on her flesh, but still she wouldn’t move to find the medics. “You have to lead them Will.”

Will took the radio back after Amelia had made her plea and he held it down at his side. "I'm not a leader Amelia. It's not an ego or confidence thing, I'm just not qualified. I can't lead them-" With that said Will tossed the radio onto the ground. "and I shouldn't. Adrian wanted a world with free choice. It's time to give him what he wanted." Almost immediately after Will had spoken the tanks opened fire again. The rebels chose to destroy the tower, not under orders, or command, they just chose to end it.

Amelia breathed a sigh of relief as the tanks started firing again. Adrian’s will would be finished, they hadn’t broken and ran to leave Sybil on a killing rampage. They knew the truth, Sybil wouldn’t be able to break them. “It’s not the same thing Will. They are free to choose to fight, or not to fight, but someone still needs to lead those who want to. To organize the battle, the troop movements, communicate between the evacuation team and the tanks so we don’t hit our own people.” She closed her eyes briefly, taking a deep breath and swaying slightly though she did manage to keep to her feet. “You know about those things Will.” She finished finally after a wave of nausea passed.

“It seems to be working.” A voice reported over the radio. “They would rather take their chances with the machines out here than definitely die in the Tower.”

"No Amelia I don't. I am no more trained to lead than the men in the tanks shooting at the tower. I can't make the choices Adrian could." Will was right, he was not qualified. Like everyone else he had spent most of his free life following Adrian and his father's commands. He went where he was told when he was told. If anything Will was probably less qualified than the rest of the men. Generally he worked alone. While the rest of the men in the Resistance could be considered Marines, Will was more of a special operations agent. He dealt with all the things Adrian needed kept quiet. Will picked the radio up off the ground when he heard the report. "Take the people as far from the tower as possible so they aren't hit by debris." That wasn't a sign of leadership, that was just common sense.

“Then find someone who is!” She answered angrily. She was upset with the entire situation really. Adrian had left them without a succession plan and Amelia figured that had been on purpose considering she had had a very similar argument with him. About life after Sybil. Why couldn’t any of them understand? Sybil was a ruler and an oppressor, but never a leader. There would be anarchy and lawlessness without a leader of some kind. The pain radiating from her broken arm was too distracting however. “Just…find me when it’s time to play his message.” She added bitterly, imagining what Adrian would have said about her injury if he was still around. Either way she turned to leave and go find the medical area just as another message came through the radio.

“The machines have broken through the left flank.”

When he heard the report over the radio, Will mumbled "We don't have enough time to find someone." The machines breaking through the left flank was not particularly troublesome, they could break every flank and nothing would save the Tower. "Is everyone out of the Tower?" Will asked over the radio.

Mason, the man who had been guarding Adrian until he was ordered to return to the tower, gathered a few troop and took to the left flank in order to buy some time. No order had been given but he, as well as the thirty rebels with him knew that it was needed. When they found the machines they opened fire on them.

“Negative. About 20% remain in the building.” There was a slight pause, then a somewhat defeated addition. “Look, we are getting hammered out here. Machines have broken ranks and have gone nuts. We are losing more people than we are saving.” He stopped short of outright saying they should bring down the Tower, that the remaining we a lost cause. They were losing too many people trying to save them. Or course no one wanted to condemn those inside to death without a chance to leave, no one wanted to make that final call.

Sybil had long since stopped worrying about self-preservation, it knew it was doomed. It was mealy trying to take out as many people as possible with it. No concern was given for friendly fire or the preservation of machines. After all once it was dead, it didn’t matter how many machines were left. Not to Sybil. Perhaps, the collective reflected, they should have taken this strategy long ago, for they were pushing the rebels back on all fronts now that they stopped pretending to have the civilians best interest at the heart they didn’t have.

Will was moments from panic. He was not Adrian, that was the key factor in them losing so many right now. He didn't know what to do and so he did the only thing he could think to. "Pull our people out and open fire on the left side of the building. When it goes down the machines and people inside will move to the right side. Have men waiting to take out the machines. " It wasn't perfect but it was a plan. It was the only plan. If this failed he would level the building. They couldn't lose any more people. In response to his orders the tanks refocused from the top floor to the supports on the left side of the bottom floor. Then they opened fire. "Report."

Much as Will predicted the humans ran from the tank fire, with the machines in hot pursuit. The machines weren’t trying to preserve themselves, only kill the fleeing humans. Today wouldn’t be a day of victory, but a day of mourning; Sybil would do everything in its power to see to that. Naturally there were losses on both sides in the initial blasts before people started scrambling to safety, though really there was none to be had.

The Tower gave a loud groan as the steel protested the loss of supports. Silence fell over the battle as all sides stopped what they were doing to look at the structure that at produced the sound. Metal screamed and concrete crumbled as the whole thing slowly started leaning to the left. The radio came to life with panic making it impossible to hear what anyone was saying, though the general idea was clear. Anyone fighting on that side should run now. Hopeful any people in the buildings in the Towers way saw what was happening and ran, but it was unlikely. In any event there wasn’t anything the resistance could do now. Then all at once the supports failed and the whole thing came down, crushing anything in its path, which given the height of the Tower, was quite a bit. Chocking dust filled the air making it impossible see very far. Well they brought down the Tower, if not in the way that had been intended.

“We’ve killed your leader and now you have failed to collapse the basement floors. In fact you have made our location more secure, buried under tonnes of rubble. It looks like I win after all.”

Those in the resistance had begun moving out of the way the moment they heard Will tell the tanks to fire and the rest had begun giving the Tower some space in order to prevent it from crushing them. All and all the rebels had done a pretty good job of avoiding the debris. Still the dust had been overlooked and the rebels sought cover in the nearby building along with the people they had managed to get out of the tower. Will found himself in the nearest building to the Tower ignoring Sybil's taunts. If the machines believed that knocking down the building itself was the endgame than it was amazing that they had managed to control the people for this long. Adrian had been in the tower, he had reported where the brains were and he was smart enough to know that knocking down the tower would do nothing.

"Amelia, get your arm fixed, you'll need it." Will ordered before speaking into his radio. "Mason get to a computer and command the machines under our control to begin clearing the rubble. We need to find that elevator shaft."

"You're not in charge here Will, why should I-" Mason's voice shot back over the radio

"Fine, enjoy living in a world ruled by Sybil then." Will's tone was dripping with sarcasm. As he tried to look through the dust outside. For a few moments there was nothing, no movement, so gunfire, but then Will saw some of the machines rise and move over to clear rubble. It was fortunate they had not all been destroyed in the battle because it would have taken too long for the rebels to do it themselves. "Tell me when they find it." With that Will clipped the radio onto his belt and moved over to one of the other rebels in the room.

"If the bomb still in the back of Adrian's truck?" Will asked. The rebel nodded and Will pat him on the back. "Thank you." With that little token of information Will checked the number of shells he had left and slung his shotgun over his shoulder before taking the rebel's fire axe. He needed to get Adrian's truck over to the elevator shaft so they could drop the bomb to the bottom floor. If they didn't, it was over.

Will’s actions left the collective in an unexpected predicament, one that running the numbers seemed to have no clear answer for. Continue its homicidal rampage or stop the bots from clearing the rubble? Was it possible they might survive this, or should they continue to spread as much destruction and death as possible? To leave the remains of the Tower undefended would certainly lead to their demise some said. To turn their attention to stopping the machines that had been taken over would leave the open to fire others countered. They can’t be saved. They can be saved. The numbers are too close to say definitively. Even if they did survive things couldn’t go back to the way before. Split vote, split our forces. It seemed the closest they could get to an agreement. So a group of machines began picking off those trying to clear the rubble while rest continued on their guerrilla style fighting of breaking ranks and killing whatever human was closest to them.

“I don’t know about using it in the near future, but I’m not bleeding all over the place anymore. What do you need Will?” Came Amelia’s answer over the radio.

Mason noticed the shift in the shift in Sybil's focus. He noticed the shift in numbers that were attacking the people. So without consulting Will he radioed in to have the men protect the machines clearing the rubble. Fortunately for them, the dust filling the air provided those who had escaped from the tower with cover and the Resistance had taken control of surrounding buildings so survivors did not have to go far to find shelter and protection. That was why Mason had been so quick to order the men to attack the machines impeding progress on the rubble clearing. Sybil was slowing progress in their search but not by much. Mason was ensuring the shaft would be discovered by the time Will arrived.

"If you have any of those little spider things left I need them to clear me a path towards the place Adrian died. His truck was out front. Sybil has larger concerns right now but I need that truck." Will responded to Amelia as he moved over to the door into the building. The moment he stepped outside he would be under fire, he had to act quickly.
