A sequel is a continuation of a series' storyline. It may or may not entail similar gameplay, with some new things added to the mix.
A remake is a retreading of an already existing game, but with new up to date features, and minor tweaks, but other than that it's the same exact story told.
That therein is where the slight differences lie.

Regulust Isn't Heart Gold just a stupid remake of Gold? Remake, yes. Stupid, not so much. Especially since the internal battery for the original G/S/C cartridges dies after six years or so. Having a copy that can actually save would be nice.
