Well there are a few types of Natale, the Italian Christmas.
The Santa Claus Tradtion is acutally becoming more popular, and is called Babbo Natale, or literally Father Christmas.
This is more similar to the stories I was told growing up, But I do acknowledge Santa Claus.
On Christmas Eve, Italians celebrate "La Vigilia", or the Feast of the seven fishes. Then, presents are brought on Epiphany by(is a festival celebrated throughout a couple of weeks and January 6 is the actual day of Epiphany - Which we celebrate the American Way on Christmas Eve.) La Befana.
La Befana is a character of Italian folklore, very similar to Santa Claus. She is usually portrayed as an old lady riding a broomstick through the air wearing a black shawl and is covered in soot because she enters the children's houses through the chimney. She is often smiling and she has a bag or a hamper filled with candy and/or gifts. She visits all the children on the night before Epiphany leaving gifts, while another character, an old man (his name escapes me at the moment) comes and fills the stocking. If you were bad you recieved a stick in your stocking, which signified you were bad, and your parents should beat you. The more stick.. More beatings.. (but that was old old tradition. It changed into only La Befana, and lumps of coal since she climbed through the chimneys.)
Thats just a short..
