 Izzy came to a stuttered stop when he entered the cabin and saw only Mary Anne sitting in the window seat instead of his captain. He glanced around thinking maybe Edward had stepped off from his usual spot but did not see him.
"Where is Blackbeard?" asked Izzy.
"Not here," replied Mary Anne.
When Izzy gave an annoyed sigh, Mary Anne chuckled as she looked up from the book she was reading.
"He went off with a few of the boys to shore to check something out," she continued. "Probably won't be back for awhile."
"Why was I not notified of this? I'm his f*cking First Mate!" growled Izzy.
"Don't fret about it too much. It's probably nothing. You know how he is. Just finding an excuse to do something to break the monotony of the recent lack of raid potentials." She then scooted over patting the window seat next to her. "Come sit with me, love. You've been on your feet all day... and probably all night knowing you."
Izzy shifted on his feet as if debating whether to let his guard down or maintain his First Mate persona he used whenever on deck among the crew. He finally looked down at the ground and nodding as his shoulders slumped.
"I suppose it has been awhile since I took a break," said Izzy.
"Come. Sit with me," prompted Mary Anne again. "You can tell me how much this man is telling the truth about these pirates he writes about."
Izzy walked over and sat down next to her taking the book from her hands. Flipping through the pages, he saw names and illustrations of various pirates he was familiar with either by hearing stories about them or having crossed paths with them before. He stopped when the book opened to the section about Blackbeard.
"I thought you might find that section interesting," said Mary Anne, resting her chin on his shoulder. "Being his First Mate and all."

Izzy wasn't sure how he ended up with his head on a pillow in Mary Anne's lap with a blanket over him but there he was. He had become engrossed with reading the words of the man who had published a book about the history of famous pirates in the area.
"Who the f*ck is saying he does that?!" exclaimed Izzy.
Mary Anne chuckled as she gently trailed her fingers through his long salt and pepper hair. "You know how it is. People take a mundane event and start talking about it to others. Along the way people start embellishing new details... until it eventually becomes fantastical stories like this."
Izzy sighed as he laid the book down in his lap and closed his eyes enjoying the pleasing sensation of her playing with his hair.
"What do you think they'll say about me?" asked Izzy.
"You were committed to your job," said Mary Anne. "And people could always count on you being by Blackbeard's side... or at least not too far away from wherever he's wandered off to."
"Yeah? Yeah, I suppose so."
Mary Anne leaned down and laid a whisper-like kiss on his forehead. The corner of his lips rose upon feeling it.
"And what about you?" he asked. "What would they say about Blackbeard's wife?"
"Well, hopefully I have a better ending than all of the other women," she replied. "I would hate that after all of the amazing adventures I had I would end up going back to the mundane life of being a housewife or wasting away to death by some illness."
"Yes, we can't have that, now can we," said Izzy, raising his hand up to gently caress her arm.
"Maybe I'll have some major showdown with the navy... and just when they think they have me, I'll sail away in a ship of my own... never to be seen again."
"Never?" asked Izzy, opening his eyes and shifting to look up at her.
"Hmm..." she thought as she gazed back. "Not by the navy anyway. A select few pirates may still see her appear out of nowhere... and they would know better to speak a work of her location to the Navy because otherwise it would be to Davy Jones' Locker with them."
"Yes. We can't have that now can we?" said Izzy.

"We need to talk," said Edward, gently grabbing Mary Anne's upper arm as he passed by her.
Mary Anne's eyebrows burrowed in confusion as she turned to follow him into his cabin.
"Is everything okay?" asked Mary Anne, closing the door behind her.
Edward walked over to his desk, casually rifling through the various items scattered about its surface between the piles of books, skulls, and candelabras.
"There's been talk of new alliances being made," said Edward after awhile.
"New alliances?" echoed Mary Anne, tilting her head in confusion.
Edward turned to look at her.
"Between someone of high standing among my crew and you."
"Ah," said Mary Anne. "And this 'alliance'... it worries you?"
"It does make me concerned on whether it is foreshadowing something that wouldn't be bloody optimal."
"Ed, love," said Mary Anne, stepping forward and cradling his face gently with her hands. She felt him nestle into her embrace. "You are my husband and nothing will change that."
"Then... these stories... these statements about... about Izzy and you?"
"Enough with beating around the bush," said Mary Anne. "Tell me what tales these boys have been spreading about Izzy and me."
"They seem to think the two of you are getting close... possibly romantically."
"And if we were?"
"Are you?" asked Edward, pulling away from her hand and looking down at her.
"Jealous?" she retorted, returning the gaze.
"Just wondering what he has that I don't."
"Nobody can top you, love," said Mary Anne. "And I won't hide the fact that Izzy and I have been getting close. We both care very much about you and have found ourselves bonding over that. Should you ever want our company... in that sense... I'm sure we would be open to it."
Edward looked down at her hands that had dropped down to his chest before reaching up to grab one and brought it to his lips.
"You are better than any treasure I could ever find," said Edward.
"As are you."
