These two lines can be viewed separately, or together.
The first line is one powerful word "life" signifying existence and ones-self and soul.
The second life can be viewed in two different ways. The first inthat it curiosity got the best of the writer.
The second possible meaning can be viewed when juxtaposing the first two lines together. "life i wondered off the trail" shows the writer has lost his way in life.
This line shows that the writer got lost in his altered way of life. Lost in his life away from his trail of life.

Given what the writer has shown in the prior lines of his work, we can gather from the two lines we look at now that now only is he off the trail; He wants to be off the trail.
The writer shows that he has the ability to get back on to a set trail of life, yet simply denies the trail, showing he has found something more than the trail can offer off the trail.

This line shows that the turbulence of three separate ways of life may have been too much, and that while he enjoyed one type of untraditional lifestyle laid out by the path, he does not like all types of lifestyles off the path.
