 Yes, Windows Live is the same thing.
Although there are many differant messengers:
AIM, MSN, YIM, etc etc.

I normally pick something close to either my real nickname: Cyan or something I'm feeling at the moment. My AIM name came from a dread of imperialism and a book I was reading about metaphysical kinetic energy.
