MMORPGs, FPS, fighting and racing games all have that same problem. They're like ALL the same, but you can list off a few that differ and are interesting. Platformers, action, rhythm and puzzle games tend to be more unique in general, I think...

I think the PS1 has a problem where none of its games are just really good, including ports. It's possible to be entertained by many of them, I'm sure, but all of them are really flawed, especially now. N64 games tend to hold up a lot better.

I think the PS1's just kind of overrated in general. I went back and tried to play a lot of the games I had for mine, and the only ones that really held up at all were the Final Fantasies.

As for JRPGs, anything that is a hybrid of one plus something else is probably worth a shot. TWEWY and KH are action role-playing, P3 and P4 are social sims on top of role-playing, Harvest Moon is a farming/management sim and a roleplaying game (though lately most games of that franchise seem shitty)

Chrono Trigger, Pokemon and Paper Mario are not hybrids, but they all have something unique about them on top of just being really good anyway.

I enjoyed FF7 but would never argue with anyone who thought it ******** sucked because it kinda did XD I just liked it. Probably mostly because of dat soundtrack. I haven't played many other FF games really.

A bit of FF1 on NES and 3 on DS, FFTA2 and the demo of Dissidia. Bleh. I have to admit that Dissidia seems really awesome for a fighting game, though.

Jasmine, the proper way for you to reply to this is "and it starts..."

We were talking about video games in one of my classes and the instructor brought up how games reinforce gender and sexuality stereotypes, and then these two guys started bullshitting about how Final Fantasy has androgynous male protagonists so that females will be able to relate better to them, so it's a feminist game or some s**t. "It has a large female fanbase" DUH, because it has pretty boys

I wanted to be like "PERSONAPERSONAPERSONA" because there are homosexual undertones, strong female leads and like at least three sexually confused characters but I said nothing

Also, I have very fond memories of Chrono Cross. It's pretty unique among the rpgs of it's day in that everyone had 3 basic attack strengths, with varying levels of accuracy, which they got to use several times, based on how much stamina they had. They also all shared more or less the same pool of expanded techniques, except each character got like 3 super moves that were special to them. The world really sucked me in at the time, and the music is just fantastic. Having to do arithmetic may not sound fun, but I enjoyed the simple depth it added.
