What program are you using to color your sprites in and if you save them as a PNG instead of JPG you'll get a better image quality.

I personally like photoshop and seems to work well. This site Spriting Guide | The Cave of Dragonflies has a pretty good tutorial for spriting.

with a little more practice and shading you can have some pretty sprites.
like the one you did but with a little more shading. here is a touch up of the one you did.

then download GIMP.
it's basically photoshop, for free. it opens all Photoshop formats, brushes, fonts, etc, and has a better set of filters in my opinion (besides Fibers, thats the one Photoshop filter i WISH gimp had...)

I have no porblem with paint I actually prefer it! All my work is with paint.

Made the Ninetales BW sets today, not sure if I showed you guys the BW Red and BW Yellow stones to go along with the Blue and Green BW stones.
