Wait... what's the point of playing a game if it's not fun? Other than to see what the game is like.
To play a game that isn't fun just to say you did it is a dumb reason. There are much better ways to impress people.
Isn't the point of games to be fun and entertaining?
If you're playing a horror game and you're thinking about how much fun it is, it's probably not doing a very good job as a horror game. The entire point of the genre is to scare you, and part of that is generally putting you on edge and making you worry about getting attacked by monsters. A good horror game still has to be engaging and play well and everything, but a game like Amnesia isn't bad just because the goal is a scary experience instead of a fun one.
I don't play a whole lot of artsy indie games, but a decent number apparently try to do something similar and make the player feel some other emotion(s)? If the game is boring or terrible to play, nobody's going to care about the loss of innocence metaphor or whatever. But some of the ones that people go nuts about are probably because the game was successful in making them feel sad/scared/etc.
