That game would be nowhere near as hard if it weren't for a) cheap enemy respawns and b) cheaply placing you at the beginning of the sixth act every time you lose to one of the final bosses even once.
I never have had the patience to deal with cheap bullshit in games so I'm determined to just go through with it this one time just to say I have. I mean, at least it's overall a good game while still being bullshit. It's not like bullshitty AND generally shitty like a lot of NES games (Ghosts 'n Goblins)

It sucks that a lot of NES devs thought they had to make the game hard to beat rather than desirable to replay. Though I guess it sucks now that devs think they need to throw fluff into good games to make them seem longer.

As far as hard games go, I Wanna Be the Guy seems to be a benchmark.
NES games were by and large linear. A second play-through of Castlevania or Mega Man isn't going to be anything new, because that's the nature of the games. Very few video games are desirable to replay, even today.

People replay Megaman games all the time! In any case, it's certainly a better thing to go for than just making the game frustratingly difficult. Well designed games are worth replaying because they have good secrets worth finding or just feel slightly different with each playthough. And I've seen way harder games than IWBTG. But IWBTG is actually a good game. Harder games I've seen are just hard for the novelty, and that's stupid.

Well, that's fair. Mega Man lets you choose the order you fight bosses in, which actually does add a lot of depth. I still think that for the most part, 2D games don't have much replayability, though.
Contra, Sonic, Mario, Kirby; all fun games to replay, but you know what you're gonna get.
And yeah, of course there are games harder than IWBTG. But without question when it comes to hard games, IWBTG is the gold standard of quality.

Thank you. ^.^
I'm going to have to play nice, colourful games that are designed for small children for the rest of the year as I recover from the trauma.

Very few video games are desirable to replay, even today. People re-watch movies because they really liked the movie and want to experience it again, not because they expect the movie to be different the second time through. New options are nice, but if I'm going to replay a game linearity is pretty much a non-issue compared to quality.
