My younger sister gets game overs in NSMBwii. Clearly age has something to do with this, so that also bugs me.
People who have been playing these games for 20 years want the games to be scaled to their growth of skill, and think it's dumb or insulting to their natural, adult level of competence when it isn't.
I'm lookin' at you, game grumps.
To be fair, their generation single-handedly shifted the demographic for video games.
What do you think the average gamer's age is? 10? 15? 18?
37.
It's the Mario franchise. A new gamer isn't that much more likely to buy a Mario game than they are an obscure rip-off. They keep making Mario games because they want us to think to ourselves "I remember playing the last Mario game, it was great. I bet the new game is even better." I think it's reasonable to expect games to mature with us, like Zelda and Metroid have on a lot of levels.
I totally see your point though. There definitely should be games that cater to kids and people who aren't experienced. Nintendo is fully capable of making different franchises for that.
