Today someone described me as calm and cool and I would have laughed if I didn't feel like I died a little on the insider.

I WANT THE 90S BACK SO INCREDIBLY BAD

Even if it means no Animal Crossing or Persona 3 or Gaia or high-speed Internet connection and web 2.0.

I think it really was the golden age of gaming. A lot of things just seem like throwbacks to the original, awesome games that came out then. It's all about dat nostalgia and there doesn't seem to be much really, really good original stuff anymore.

Back when Pokemon was so insanely popular that the movies played in theaters, and it hadn't become stale and repetitive. Back when Sanic was KING and his games were like, flawless. Back when everyone loved the N64, which MAY be my favorite console overall. Its games have always made me happy. The games could just be simple and not gimmicky. Super Mario 64. Donkey Kong 64. Kirby 64. Paper Mario, just an RPG, not a weird sticker game. So straightforward, and good. Mario Kart 64 gave us everything a MK game REALLY needed. Mario Party wasn't overdone as hell. Super Smash Bros. always had a completely different, more simple atmosphere than its successors, and makes me feel so much more at ease because people don't play it as seriously.

Back when TV had more quality shows. and you could just go rent a movie or game. You can't do that anymore, and Netflix is completely insufficient.

Back when pop music was good and you could just listen to whatever was on the radio and it'd be good. I guess I could listen to Internet radio stations...

Back when I could live in real life and not have to get online to find people who don't suck.

People will say it wasn't that good and I'm just being nostalgic, but I just feel like there was a higher quality of life back then. I guess a big part of it could also be that when we were kids, my peers and I actually had common interests and now they all are like hipsters who like partying, school and shitty TV shows and don't care for games or cartoons or any of this "geeky" stuff anymore. And my family is like the opposite of what it once was. My dad used to have an awesome gf in the 90s and my mom an awesome bf, but now they're all broken up and are with new people that are real lame (or just single, in my dad's case). They also have a bunch of little kids who make me feel really out of place for being 20 with parents in their early 40s.

Fish had better make sure you don't spend your retirement funds on a 90s sports car.

Viz put the first dubbed episode of Tiger & Bunny on their YouTube channel. It's a pretty fun anime about superheroes (although it's kind of dumb in places, but that's hardly a new thing for superhero stories) with a great cast, and the dub is pretty solid so far. Go check it out.

I don't know if they'll put any more of the dub up online, but the whole thing's on Hulu if you're fine with subtitles. Otherwise the discs come out in a few days.

The whole 'X decade was the best and nothing matches it' mentality is stupid. Were there good things in the 90's? Sure; there are plenty of 90's shows/games/music/etc. that I really like. But there's also a ton of entertainment that we all forgot because it was mediocre or terrible. I can go dig out old boy bands if you need a reminder of bad 90's pop music, for example.

Same with the 00's/10's. There's a fair amount of good entertainment coming out along with a ton of garbage; we just think about the garbage now because it's more recent and we hear about everything nowadays thanks to the internet. And while there's been some annoying nostalgia grabs, we've gotten some really good original franchises and some old franchises going in very different directions this millennium; 00-13 covers the libraries for the Gamecube, DS, and PS2 (among plenty of others) if you need a starting point.

I also don't understand how you can complain about Netflix being insufficient when it has streaming (watch things right now) and streaming in general has become more widespread (again, watch things right now; no going to the store, no having to settle if the disc/tape you want isn't available, no waiting, and it costs less than rentals in the long run if you're regularly streaming). The disc service means you still have some waiting, but if you're smart about managing your queue you can minimize that problem. And rentals aren't completely gone; they've just changed to services like Redbox.

Also, from a mechanics standpoint, first gen had a lot of problems. I love RBY, but I would never use them to introduce someone to the franchise. I'd like to see Nintendo take Pokémon in new directions, but I'm glad that they've at least been fixing and improving the mechanics over the last 15 years.
Pokémon designs are more debatable, but aside from gen IV I feel like my like:dislike ratio has been pretty consistent. I think the ice cream pokémon is stupid, but I thought fighting food was stupid when I saw Exeggcute too.

NO YOU'RE STUPID I LIKED BACKSTREET BOYS AND N*SYNC

Canada's Netflix has an utter crap selection compared to the US's and we don't have Redbox either.

The early 2000s were pretty much as great as the 90s. It was around when facebook became popular that I started to feel like, just TOO connected, and things just got a bit too complex in some areas.

Pokemon probably reached its peak at Gen 2. That game was worked on as though it was going to be the last Pokemon game, and it was just perfect. Now people EV train and junk and there are WAY too many Pokemon and it has just gotten real stale. I still like it, but it's just not, like, perfect anymore. I didn't mind the problems in the first gen, either. At least it was simple and fresh.

But for me, a big part of it was the social life more than the entertainment. At least now a lot of media-related things are more convenient.

Have you ever considered you might just be more discerning as an adult?

Yep.

As a 90's child, I'm not all that nostalgic about 80s music, but going back to it, it just sounds WAY more quality than what we hear on the radio now, for example. To my adult, discerning tastes.
