The whole 'X decade was the best and nothing matches it' mentality is stupid. Were there good things in the 90's? Sure; there are plenty of 90's shows/games/music/etc. that I really like. But there's also a ton of entertainment that we all forgot because it was mediocre or terrible. I can go dig out old boy bands if you need a reminder of bad 90's pop music, for example.
Same with the 00's/10's. There's a fair amount of good entertainment coming out along with a ton of garbage; we just think about the garbage now because it's more recent and we hear about everything nowadays thanks to the internet. And while there's been some annoying nostalgia grabs, we've gotten some really good original franchises and some old franchises going in very different directions this millennium; 00-13 covers the libraries for the Gamecube, DS, and PS2 (among plenty of others) if you need a starting point.
I also don't understand how you can complain about Netflix being insufficient when it has streaming (watch things
right now) and streaming in general has become more widespread (again, watch things right now; no going to the store, no having to settle if the disc/tape you want isn't available, no waiting, and it costs less than rentals in the long run if you're regularly streaming). The disc service means you still have some waiting, but if you're smart about managing your queue you can minimize that problem. And rentals aren't completely gone; they've just changed to services like Redbox.
Also, from a mechanics standpoint,
first gen had a lot of problems. I love RBY, but I would never use them to introduce someone to the franchise. I'd like to see Nintendo take Pokémon in new directions, but I'm glad that they've at least been fixing and improving the mechanics over the last 15 years.
Pokémon designs are more debatable, but aside from gen IV I feel like my like:dislike ratio has been pretty consistent. I think the ice cream pokémon is stupid, but I thought fighting food was stupid when I saw Exeggcute too.
