Judging someone for something like that would be real dumb, although you could do normal mode with proto and it'd still be pretty easy. Also just play the normal mode... the one that's not classic.
2 is only the easiest because it's the one everyone has played the most. In 3 and onwards I'm pretty sure you keep E-Tanks after game overing, so you can use them if it gets too BS. For the NES ones, at least...

I spent a weekend with some friends and their friends out in a cabin in a big resort area on a lake in Gordonsville a few summers ago. The were running a promo where if you brought them a four leaf clover they'd give you a free 1 hour boat rental. We found a clooover.
I spent a few days in a really beautiful, horse ranch just outside of Harrisonburg when my brother graduated from JMU. That place I even recall the name of. It was "River's Bend Ranch," and you could actually see the stars at night. It was neat. We rented the actual old ranch house, but there was a bunk house for larger groups, and several smaller cabins dotted the road back to the highway.
