When he was 5, he stumbled upon a group of spiritualists in a graveyard who were conducting a ceremony that made Ren get struck by lightning. In the Afterworld, he met the current angel of Death, who told Ren that he may return to life if he became the new Reaper for the rest of his mortal life. Ren accepted, not knowing the consequences, and soon was given the ability to kill anyone in any way and a self-updating "Who to Kill" list.
