"Yeah, his grave. He was surprisingly well put together after the fall but... no one should see him. It... it changes things." Will tried to explain but it was hard. Losing Adrian was one thing, seeing him was another. He didn't know what to say any better than anyone else. Adrian was gone, nothing could change that and any words trying to commemorate him would have been a waste. Nothing would compare to him, no words would be enough. At least, none Will could think of. "I don't plan to say anything, at least not before the mass that will gather. Maybe with the council but even then... maybe I'll just find a quote from one of the books he used to read."

“I’m sorry Will. I can’t imagine….thanks to you. Really thank you Will. You didn’t have to do that and I will always be grateful. I don’t think I would have done too well if you would have let me seen him.” Amelia admitted to Will. It was something she’d never be able to repay him for, sparing her that moment. She recognized that now, but still wished to try to help Will deal with seeing Adrian dead like that. “Why don’t you tell me about him? About how you met?” Maybe talking about him will help she thought.

It was then that the car stopped. they hadn't really reached the new headquarters yet and they weren't in a heavily populated area of the city so Will just stopped in the middle of the road. "There was a totality to seeing him. A kind of hook that dug in and tore away any hope that he had survived. If you can imagine that, then you'll know what it felt like." Will spoke softly with a solemn voice before beginning to drive again. "Tasted like lemons. Sour." That was his best attempt at making things light again. "I was actually a street rat before the resistance. Only seven or eight with no parents alive. Spent my time stealing and hiding. Eventually I wasn't good enough at hiding and Sybil found me. So did Adrian's father. He saved me and brought me into the resistance. That's how I met Adrian. He was about the same age at the time."

Amelia looked at Will, silently watching as Will stopped the truck. She felt her stomach clench. Had she said something wrong, as she seemed prone to doing? Had her comment pissed him off? She let out a breath she didn’t realise she was holding when he began to try to explain what it was like instead of getting angry with her. “I…think I understand, but I’m sure experiencing it and imagining it are two very different things. I suppose for the rest of us that hope will slowly fade over time. Do you regret doing it?” Logically they all knew he was dead, or at least she had since she saw him fall from the building. The rest had not but her word it happened. Logically she told herself he was dead but even she understood that small glimmer of hope that he had made it somehow. “And I like lemons. You must have been pretty good at hiding still, to make it any length of time without Sybil finding you. What was his father like?”

"My only regret is that I went to hold our ground around the Tower while allowing Mason to go with Adrian. If I'd been there... no.... no one could have stopped what he was going to do. He had probably planned it all. That would be just like him." Will knew he wouldn't have been able to stop Adrian from going. No one would have. They were only a few minutes from the end of their journey now and he knew it. The new headquarters was growing closer and closer every moment. "No one knew this city like I did in those days. Not even Sybil. But age has dulled my memory of the secret passages I knew. I thought I was the only one but his father must have at least known of some. His father was a good man with an iron heart. I was amazed to hear what had happened to him down in the basement of that building. He never would have broken but he did. He was twice the leader Adrian was but not willing to sacrifice near as much."

“I don’t think it would have really mattered at that point anyway….or that’s what he told me anyway. That his heart was going to give out soon, that even if he would have had made it out of the building he would’ve be lucky to live long enough to see the Tower fall. That he would die while you guys celebrated around him. He just seemed so….determined to die. I…sorry, but I don’t know how else to say it.” Amelia really didn’t know how to phrase it. At her every attempt to try to save him he would shut her down and tell her there was no hope. After getting shot he was so angry and bitter, yet if he had really hated her why didn’t he take her up on her offer? “I wish I could have met him. I don’t think he really did….at least not in the way you think. I mean Sybil was a bunch of brains hooked up together and able to directly interface with computers and machines right? I imagine there was some sort of process involved when hooking up a new mind, but maybe Sybil didn’t want to wait. Adrian had already almost gotten his Father back once so maybe it decided to directly interface with him without doing the proper prep work. Maybe in doing so it drove him insane and Sybil only got part of the information it wanted. What was down in that basement…well he was better off dead when we found him.”

"Probably best not to say anything then. That's the funeral idea." As Amelia spoke Will tried to focus on driving. This was not a pleasant topic. It was bringing up memories that really should have just stayed buried. "We should discuss something else. I'd rather not think about Adrian and his father right now." Will finally said aloud as he drove.

“I’m sorry….I didn’t mean to upset you.” Amelia said softly turning her gaze away from Will towards the new headquarters. It seemed like a poor way to end the conversation, but she honestly couldn’t think of another subject. The biggest problem was she did want to talk about these things, to get all of the thoughts rattling around inside her mind out into the air and he was the only one she really could talk to about these things. Her explanation had meant to be comforting, that the first Director hadn’t betrayed them or given in, but simply had his memories taken directly from his mind. Clearly she had failed on that front. “What are you planning on doing between now and the funeral?” She finally asked.

"I don't know. I don't have many plans until they Council suddenly tosses a bunch of work my way, and they will. I guess I may have to oversee the work on the rest of the city's facilities." Will responded. "What about you? Are you gonna just wait to see what happens with the power plant or do you have other plans?"

Amelia leaned back in the seat and closed her eye, taking a deep breath before answering him. “Beyond having my arm looked at, I’m really not certain. Perhaps I’ll go back to the power plant and see how things are running. Maybe look into some upgrades or something if the council doesn’t need me….I feel lost….” She finally admitted to Will. “I’ve always had as much work as I could handle. A next task or something to work on. I don’t really know what to do with myself.”

"There will always be room for improvement. Plenty of ways to increase power output, flow, you know, overall performance." Will admitted. The power plant's first Sybil-free run would probably go less than perfectly so they would have plenty of time to try and fix it but if it worked, they would have at least the power they needed. "You should probably relax. Head into the city and make some friends. Plenty of Sybil and Adrian-free minds now."

Amelia gave a soft laugh at Will’s description on ways the power plant could be improved though she remained seated as she was, leaned back with her eyes closed. He was not wrong, but after spending four days with people like her she found the vagueness of his answer amusing. “If the world is going to run on fewer machines I imagine the demand for power will go down anyway. Food production is going to be the real problem I think. Power hasn’t really changed in 200 years, but food certainly has. It’ll be difficult to go to a less machine reliant process while still producing enough to feed everyone.” There were still ‘farmers’ but the machines did all of the work. Amelia wasn’t even certain how much they really knew about producing food as she largely suspected it was a make work position to keep the humans busy while the machines really did everything and largely ignored any human input. “Adrian free?” She questioned finally opening an eye to look at Will. Sure the Sybil comment made sense as that was what they had been fighting for after all, but Adrian? “Why do I feel like I am being dumped?” She added with a small laugh. She wasn’t sure if the Adrian comment had been a slip of the tongue he didn’t want to talk about or if he had deliberately said it, but decided it would be best to give him an opportunity to ignore her question. “If you haven’t noticed meeting people and making friends isn’t exactly my forte.”

"You'd be surprised. Plenty of land to farm. Not in the Hangar but Adrian grew most of the food he stored. We don't know how he kept it hidden from everyone but a few miles east of the city limits there is a small farm. Very small and entirely machine free, but it has the potential for growth if we can get it up and running again. " Will responded before immediately hopping to what he meant by Adrian free. "People saw how he acted around you and may feel inclined to act the same. Even when we do not want to, we have an effect on the actions of others. An you're never going to make friends with that attitude."

“Does anyone else know how he grew the food?” It was all well and good that Adrian was able to grow his own food, but who knew how many years of trial and error it took him to figure it out. They didn’t have that luxury, they had a city to feed. “I’m not sure there will be much of a difference now. Isn’t there some saying about only getting one first impression? But….if you come with me I’ll try.” Perhaps with Will to act as a sort of buffer for her utter social awkwardness the experience wouldn’t be entirely horrible. Plus they might be more inclined to give her a chance with his presents.

"It's not very hard to grow things. Put seed in ground, put water on seed. Wait. That's how the books talked about it." Will dismissed the grievance with ease and without any regret. "You know that there are other people, outside of the Resistance who have never met you. I'm sure you'd be fine talking to them. Still if you want me to go with you, I will."
