Well if you're using your computers then yeah that's stupid. If you're using their computers, then they have to protect themselves from viruses and other crap. sweatdrop

If you're using their computers, then they have to protect themselves from viruses and other crap. sweatdrop youtube never gave out viruses. They made it where their server will send the information, but not give you back what it recevies. The IT guys admited it stare by the way if you missed it in the Yuri thread

A proxy is a server out there in cyberspace that plays "middleman" for you. You run your searches and view your pages through it, so if the destination site tried to trace back to you, it would find the proxy server as the "source" and have no idea it was you requesting the page view or running the search. Where this comes in handy with blocks is that it also serves to make the page you are viewing anonymous as well - most blocks just have a loooong list of web pages that are on the "bad" list, and won't show them. But since your page views run through the proxy server, the block software will only see the address of what you are viewing as being that server, and not "XXX Hotties" or whatever you are looking at, and allow it.
It's like this: If you were hypnotized so that you could not look directly at naked ladies, a proxy is like watching a tv with naked ladies on it. You get to see the naked ladies, but all you're technically looking directly at is a TV, so the hypnosis doesn't kick in, and you are allowed to see. Get it?

Please don't use a proxy, it causes hell for Wikis.
I am a very active member in a wiki called Guildwiki, and we had to ban multiple proxy ips, thus preventing huge swaths of people from editing, because one person vandalized through the proxy.

Seems like a bit of an overreaction, doesn't it? Banning all proxies and advising people not use them, simply because one person caused you some trouble?

We didn't ban all proxies, just the proxies IP. So say that 20 people used that proxy, and one vandalized, those other 19 got banned as well, simply because we can't directly ban the vandalizer.
