I definitely think Gaia is in a decline. Mostly because of the millions of users who don't know how to talk to other people. I remember when I first joined Gaia, they said that you should type sophisticatedly [or something to that effect] and not in 1337 because people won't respect you. That's one of the reasons I type like this now and not in 1337. I'm wondering, did that disappear? Or are people just not paying attention to it? It makes me so sad.
I think the lack of cool MC's and items is also part of the problem. One of Gaia's most appealing features is dressing up your avatar and trying to make it look cool.
And I agree that the Cash Shop should go. I understand why it's here and that they need money, but I don't like it. Partly because I can't buy anything, and partly because they're handing out so many crap items with it.
I just hope Gaia gets better once they add the MMO. :[

This passed April 30th marked my fourth year on Gaia, and I agree that a lot has changed, some for the better, more for the worse. The horrible increase in stupidity plays a big part. It used to be that you didn't have to post up a rule in the first post of a thread stating "Follow the dang rules." Duh.
I also find it sad that when I first started, it was outrageous when an MC was sold for 4k in the MP, and now it's hard to find one for 15k.
But yeah, I agree with a lot that's already been said. Sure, it's understandable that funds are necessary to maintain the servers, but not everybody can afford to pay real money for the Cash Shop items.

Partly because I can't buy anything, and partly because they're handing out so many crap items with it. Well... I take care in picking out the best stuff. I can't afford much anyways.  Trying to differentiate the good crap from the bad crap is hard to tell now, because of the evolving items. You, quite honestly, never know what you're going to get. So it's a risk with every item now. It could become a ridable and cause the price to take a nosedive, just like the White Drome Egg. *slowly raises hand*

i've been here for near a year...this upcoming sunday will be my anniversary....and i've seen a lot of changes on gaia too
some have been better, some have gotten worse...more and more things are released on the cash shop...which you have to pay real money to afford those items...
i think that gaia has still maintained a bit of its old self..
although there are quite a lot more sponser items nowadays...
things have gotten worse..things have gotten better...
so it's around 50/50~~

Heh, fun thing that I picked this gem up before it got bumped off.
I lunno if other 03'ers posted, seeing how I combed through SOME pages, but I have to agree with the majority of the posters, Gaia lost it's luster a while back, at least to me.
This might feel like a rant, but meh, I don't care.
(tl;dr? Summary is at the end of the post)
As it's been pointed out, the MCs/Cash shop/Gaia Cash come first of all. In the past, ypu had to work your a** off to get gold, and be able to buy the little things that came out every month or so, and wear them proudly. Nowadays, a spoiled kid that has nothing to spend on can pretty much buy every item in the Gaia inventory if he wants to. Where's the fun in that?
On the inventory itself, we got a few items sets every couple of months along with a cool high quality item that we could OPTIONALLY buy for $2.50. If we opted to, that's all Gaia asked for, and we'd gladly give it as a donation to keep the thing we used running. But now, not only do the MC's have different low-quality poses to compensate, but there's the cash shop. There are quite literally 10 Cash shop item updates for every single regular item update. What happened to the site being free? Now, if you want to be able to have items of the same quality as the cash shop items, you need to dish out REAL money to pay for it.
The amount of items being dished out is ridiculous too, especially the sponsor items. In the past, I could actually keep track of what items existed and recognize them accordingly. Now, so much crap is coming out at the same time, and I just stopped caring.
The Gaia userbase itself has changed too. All you have to do is take a look at the forums. The GD? /b/ without explicit imagery. GCD? Idiots having orgasms to pixelated characters and complaining that items are too expensive. Barton Town? Full of illiterate people who think that they're Mary Sue "ORIGINAL DO NOT STEAL" characters are the best s**t ever. The entire Entertainment section? Fanboys/girls bickering over which crummy anime/TV show/game/sport is better. You can't even build up a decent conversation in the music forum without an elitist p***k coming up and taking everything you did down because he thinks he's the authority on whatever it is you like.
Basically put? Gaia's been going downhill since 2003, wether it's a quality drop, or just an increase in members, the devs keep getting lazier event-wise. The first 2003 Christmas, the whole Ron Bruise parody whose been reduced to plain cinema-duty, the whole Santa vs Jack event, those were memorable things. Ever since the winter event with Santa vs Alien #whatever, every major event has been basically the same. Go to Forum B, click on X thing under the user's avatar, etc. If the next event has the same system, I'm not gonna even bother participating.
So yeah, that was a mouthful, but it's the thoughts of an angry Gaian from 2003. I lack the attention span for Gaia as it is, and if they come up with bullshit like "GAIA PLATINUM, PREMIMUM ACCOUNT SERVICE", consider me gone from the whole thing.
tl;dr , Gaia's only been going down since they hit their prime, they're paying so much attention to their MMO that the whole site is going down the shitter.
