It is in my opinion that the capacity to tolerate certain music determines your intelligence. Haha, I know many people would agree, but that's what I think. Persuade me otherwise.

I think most people CAN'T enjoy classical music is because usually in classical music, there's so much going on at once in a piece it's hard to... oh I don't know, follow? Rap, rock, etc. etc. is much easier to follow along with. Beats are easier to hear, yadda-yadda. It takes time to appreciate classical music for most people. It's a generational thing I suppose.

Wow, your guys cases are quite extreme to me. I remember one time my teacher played classical music in the middle of class, and people didn't seem to mind at all! and I sometimes actually invite my friends to my youth symphony concerts and they seem to like it...and want to come again! and when my school orchestra plays at assemblies, we usually get good response! not just polite clapping, but whooping and cheering, and at one time a standing ovation o.o maybe it's just where I live xD

Well, I guess we all have a tendency to be grim about it. Played some classical today at school with my laptop, people thought it was weird music. They reacted like I was someone strange, but one older person (much older) in the class did really like it. And others too now and then.

Thats so cool. Where I live. The education system is trying so hard to get rid of band. They even tore down one of the band rooms of one of the middle schools. Only to much protest by local musicians rebuilt it. You can forget having a school orchestra where I live. The only thing there is, is the bands that manage survive no funding, no help, no attention. The directors are only local musicians who care enough to want to see the music stay in schools. Otherwise they wouldnt be teaching. If they didnt step up and teach, there would be no music. The kids here dont care about music. They dont respect it at all, and want nothing to do with it. The adults are just as closed minded and care about football and the "FCAT" more than anything else.

We have an Orchestra here in town created not too long ago and thats where I play, as well as most of the directors. We are the cultural center of our city, and were trying hard to rebuild the culture here. But it can be hard with no respect. Were slowly becoming more and more popular though, as more people here open thier minds and eyes.

I like classical music but my sister doesn't. She likes any song with words. and then sings with it. It give me a headache after a while. But its the best way to kick here out of the house or to her room.

It's probably not. I've had similar experiences. For one thing, being at a live performance is profoundly different from hearing a recording. For one, it's a heck of a lot louder, unless you have a killer sound system. It's also much more nuanced, as something is always cut out in the recording process.

It also depends on the music. If you're playing music that you like earnestly and with the knowledge that you like it, that enthusiasm will help bring the piece to life, and create an emotional response to the audience in turn.

Amphion--I totally agree. I actually don't like recordings. at all. I prefer live performances. You don't get the same thing with a recording :S you're probably right, though. our concerts are pretty intense. and we play awesome music that we loveeeee :]

`Kel`--I hate that schools focus more on sports than the arts. that's messed up. In middle school they tried to drop the band and orchestra program. We all protested and signed petitions and stuff. grrrr. My high school is much much better with that. They totally support the arts. I see my school administrators at my youth symphony concerts. and the students are pretty supportive too. I mean, almost EVERYONE goes to school plays and musicals, and I hear a lot of good feedback from them afterwards. It's actually the opposite--no one goes to football games and stuff, but everyone goes to the school plays xD

nechuroo--aww that sucks :[

I Cosmo I
i think people dont like classical music because they werent around it when they were little, they were raised listening to modern music, i was raised listening to 'The Classical Child' and i also when to a catholic church which means i had listened to classical hymns alot. its hard to change someones like of music .-.

I was brought up with Rock and pop. I love Classical Music though... Though thats just me, I suppose a lot of people aren't into it because they brought up with it.

I didnt grow up on classical. I grew up on Irish music and Rock. Now I love classical too.

I really don't think that it's a matter of what kind of music you grew up with. I grew up listening to nothing but pop, and alternative rock, but I love not only classical music, but all eras of music whether it be baroque, neo classical, romantic. I think the lack of appreciation is more over a lack of knowing what to listen for. I mean in todays world of retrogressions, and parallel fifths it hard for most people to listen for and hear a good secondary diminshed vii7/iii chord, or listen to and appreciate the difference between a baroque sonata and a classical sonata. I think that if more people were educated in the different styles of music and the theory behind it there would be an increase in the appreciation of "classical" music.

They serve their purpose. If you want/need to get familiar with a piece, it's much more efficient to check out a recording of it than to wait until a local group performs it live, especially if it's something obscure.

just to get back at him

I think it's because people are just interested in the next new thing, and Classical Music was the "Next New Thing" 200 or so years ago. I like classical music but it gets boring sometimes, so I switch over to pop and country periodically. I personally can not stand Rap *Blech*. It's not rap, it's poetry! and bad poetry at that.

I think its a matter of exposure. Most of us here who like classical music either play it, or were brought up hearing a lot of it.

I have very few friends who enjoy classical music ... and those who do still don't appreciate it as much as I do = It's quite sad, really.

I think that it's because we have a very short attention span, and what we DO pay attention to, it's very very shallowly.

Take a Bach Fugue.
It's very VERY interesting, but... people think they're boring because they don't hear voices, they hear notes. They're not listening, only hearing.
