I actually prefer a button masher to most RPGs. At least you have a bit of input in the former.

Yes. But at least you're playing, rather than watching. >.> Note: Most RPGs. A number of them are fairly decent. gutterball29 Unsynched, button-mashing Ice Climbers are actually quite effective in brawl.. I'll have to disagree. Pain In The a** =/= Effective.

I believe it was Zero Punctuation's Yahtzee who said, "there has to be something wrong with a genre where you can spend 15 years learning every possible combo and still be beaten by someone randomly mashing buttons". XD

Button Mashing won't save your hide in Pocket Fighter.
You gotta know the punch-kick combos to get the upper hand.
I myself don't really button mash. I do tend to press the button once or twice. I dunno, maybe I just want the attack to deliver all the sooner. (Though I know that won't happen xd )
Just keeping calm and knowing when to execute the proper command is bound to trounce some of the trigger-happy ones out there.

Hey, If I have a move that works, I'll use it maybe two or three times. Doesn't mean I'm button mashing. Though, I love when i'm playing a button masher, and they say "Do that again!", when I pull off something powerful, and I do. Shuts 'em up. *shrug*

Meta_Fish Trenn Flashkill If you can't find a way to counter it, who's the real noob? xd ... I should know, I'm a high ranking officer of the button-masher army. STOP CHEESIN' THE FIREBALL But really, button mashing in Brawl? It seems like the one fighting game where that wouldn't help you win. That said, I don't like other fighting games much. xd ACTUALLY... my cousin beat me by button masshing Marth's forward+A... kinda pathetic how i always jumped back in front of him instead of hanging to the ledge...maybe im the n00b?

I can understand trouble getting the timing right for a parry or counter if they're just randomly pressing buttons and even they don't know what they're going to throw at you next. If you get out of their range, a player with a limited or unpredictable arsenal will most likely charge at you to repeat what they were doing, giving you the opportunity to beat them to the punch with a nice big run counter. This, however, is coming from the Namco fighters, which give you a fair bit of room for 8-way movement.
As for Brawl, I don't mind spammers, since they're easy to get around. It's people that seem incapable of losing the race for a Smash Ball that I can't stand.. gonk I'm looking at you, Lucas!

i only used BRAWL as an example of button mashing because i was obsessed at the time i wrote it. but the soul caliber games got on my nerves, ever since i got the first one. "soulblade" for PS1 i always used the same move over and over... good time good times....

Capcom made it easy to button mash on a lot of their crossover titles. I almost think they encouraged it with the Marvel vs. Capcom series, considering their "easy control" mode can let you perform a super move just by pressing either all 3 punch or all 3 kick buttons. The King of Fighters and Fatal Fury basically require more complex configurations in order to perform any of the super moves. Terry Bogard move list:
