Indeed Hayao Miyazaki is worth every praise in his works. Even those who have no clue what anime really is know of his work. And according to wikipedia his works also happen to bring in the highest income from since they were released (source).
As for my favorite - choosing one is plain tourture. I have a whole load of them downloaded and can watch them whenever I see fit.
