Tell me, what is a human worth without a heart?

She curled up in the soft red sheets as she closed her eyes tightly. It seemed like the kittens were already asleep since she didn't hear the familiar sound of their cries for their mother. Violetta bit her lip.. she didn't know what to do anyone. Of course her father wanted to help but she was too afraid to reach out and take it.. after all, it could just come tumbling down and she would end up in the same position she was in before, maybe even worse. Violetta didn't want to risk being betrayed like that again, she didn't want to let anyone else into her life to have the same thing happen. People said they weren't all the same, that they wouldn't do something like that.. but she had heard those same words from her fiance.

Burying herself under the various sheets, her face was expressionless, even a bit paler than it had been before. Even though she wasn't asleep, her eyes were still closed as she listened to everything around her. It was so peaceful.. so quiet... and yet she didn't feel anything, anything at all.

For mine seems to have been destroyed.

Brandon kept his mind empty of thoughts, completely concentrating on trying to catch any sounds that came from his mistress' room. He didn't like it, the silence. Silence was emptiness. Sure, he liked the quiet, but not complete silence. It made him nervous, like there was no life around at all.
Unable to sit still, he got to his feet, pushing himself away from the wall. Despite himself, he started pacing. Other people pacing had always annoyed him but now he understood why people did it.
What was she doing in there? Was she asleep? Surely she couldn't fall asleep that fast. But then what was she doing? It was too quiet in there for his comfort. Maybe she was trying to fall asleep. Maybe his pacing was keeping her awake. That thought made him pause, confused. He glanced at the door, leaning back against the wall but remaining standing.

Tell me, what is a human worth without a heart?

She sighed when she heard the pacing, she guessed that it was her father. "Come in." she said, loud enough for the person outside her door to come in. She sat up and leaned against the headboard. Her eyes opened, her bangs had moved and now her different colored eyes were both visible. She had found a bit of comfort in the silence, but it was never for long before she felt she was falling in some kind of an abyss. Placing her hands on her lap, she sighed as her stomach growled. She hadn't eaten anything in days due to the fact that she wasn't inspired to live life.. or motivated to do anything for that matter.

Wrapping her arms around her thin waist, she tilted her head back as Ebony jumped up onto the bed and sat down next to her, purring lightly. The only thing that kept her alive these days were her pets.. otherwise she would forever remain in her room.

Brandon blinked when he heard his mistress speak. It was quiet, barely audible, but he did hear her. Stepping away from the wall, he walked up to the door then hesitated. But she'd told him to come in. Surely he couldn't get in trouble just for following her orders?
Grasping the doorknob, he pushed the door open, peering inside. He tilted his head at the sound of her stomach growling, surprised by the fact that she was hungry and yet didn't get up. Perhaps she wanted him to get her something to eat.
He glanced at the cat before looking back to his mistress, stepping into the room and watching her, waiting for an order.

Tell me, what is a human worth without a heart?

She sighed when she realized it was Brandon. "Oh.. it's you.." she said quietly before pulling her knees up to her chest and resting her head on top of them. "Did you need something?" Violetta asked, tilting her head slightly to the right, making her bangs fall back over her green eye. No, he wouldn't answer her as usual, no matter what she asked. "Feel free to sit if you want." she told him, not really caring about anything at the moment. Slowly she got up off the bed as Ebony stretched.

Violetta moved over to her slave, it was odd to think of it that way but it was the truth. The tips of her fingers gently touched his chin. "You must be hungry." yes, she was hungry as well, but she didn't want to eat. Her voice didn't have any emotion to it at all though.. it was just soft, yet it could send chills down one's spine if she wanted it to. Moving over to the door, she opened it and leaned against the frame of it. Catching a nearby maid, she asked her to bring some food up for her, since if she told her that it was for her slave, the maid would surely bring scraps. After that, she closed the door and went back to sitting in the same spot she had been before on her bed.

Brandon, of course, did not respond to her questions. Did she really expect him to? After all, people thought he was mute and he wanted it to stay that way. Did he need something? Yeah, something to do. He had long ago forgotten what it was like to think for himself, to do something without having to be told to do it.
At her offer to sit, he remained standing. It was only right that he stand or-. The thought was cut off as the girl got to her feet, walking over to him. The soft feel of her fingertips against his chin surprised him and, this time, he didn't even try to hide it.
At her words, he realized that he was actually quite hungry. They hardly got fed in the store, only just enough to keep them alive. He knew his face didn't show it, for which he was grateful, but under his shirt, his ribs poked through his skin. He was lucky he didn't easily lose mass from his face. Often, slaves weren't chosen because they were too skinny, too gaunt. A gaunt face was even more disturbing than a gaunt body.
Watching her walk over to the door and call out to a maid, he found himself, once again, confused. This one didn't follow the unwritten laws that seemed to bring masters together as one kind. She was different from the others, in some aspects anyway.
When she returned to sitting on her bed, he walked over, taking a seat on the floor beside her bed, closest to her feet.

He was surprised by her actions, she knew that much. Sighing, she quietly waited for the maid to come back. Violetta couldn't help but blink when he sat down next to her bed, near her. She had offered him to sit in a chair but she guessed he preferred to be on the floor though she couldn't figure out why. Shaking her head, she heard the soft knocking of the maid on her door a few minutes later. "Come in." she told her as the maid brought in a cart full of various food. Red and green grapes, fried chicken with rice, mashed potatoes, fish with different kinds of seasonings and so on. "Leave us." she told the maid since she had looked at the slave in a strange way.

Once the maid had closed the door behind her and Violetta was sure that she was gone. "Go ahead and eat." she told him as the smell of all the food filled the room, making her stomach scold her for not feeding it but she shrugged the feeling off, leaned back and closed her eyes. She knew that the cooks in the kitchen were excellent, her father had made sure of that. Brandon would enjoy the food, anyone would if it was offered to them but she didn't want any of it. There was no point in eating if she didn't want to stay in this world.

Brandon was aware of his mistress' eyes on him. He wasn't sure why. Surely she must know of the lessons that were beaten into every single slave. A slave's place was at his master's feet. A slave was never to look his master in the eye -he'd never been able to learn that lesson, which had gotten him beaten on several occasions. A slave was to obey his master's will, no matter what.
A knock at the door pulled Brandon from his melancholy thoughts. He watched as the door opened, a maid walking in, carrying a tray of food. The very sight of it made his stomach ache with hunger. The smell that wafted from it made his stomach growl, thought he quickly stifled the sound by wrapping an arm over his stomach, a trick he'd learned in the store. If they made what the owner thought was too much noise, they were beaten, even if it wasn't a noise they consciously made.
Noticing the maid watching him, he quickly lowered his head, his hair falling over his eyes as he looked at the floor. He only looked up again when he heard the door close.
"Go ahead and eat." Turning his head, he looked up at his mistress in confusion. It was her food. But, then, he noticed something he hadn't before. He had seen it so often in other slaves that he was surprised he hadn't realized it sooner. He saw in her a lack of will to live.
He frowned and shook his head. She was hungry and it was her food. She was the one who should be eating. Another of the lessons taught popped into his head. The master's wellbeing, and that of his family and friends, comes before the wellbeing of the slave. He normally wouldn't refuse food, and certainly never such extravagant food, but, if he did eat it, she wouldn't.

She laughed lightly when he refused the food, though it was a sad laugh. "You refuse?" she tilted her head in confusion. "But I know you're hungry." Violetta smiled a bit before getting up. Walking over to the cart, she picked up vine of grapes with one hand then went back to him. Kneeling down in front of him, she offered him the grapes. Plucking one off, she placed it between her index finger and thumb, giving it to him. "I don't want it." Violetta told him, her cold eyes had a hint of sadness to them. "There's more then enough food for the two of us if that's what you're worried about." she added as she looked into his rather beautiful eyes. They had the will to survive.. the will that she had lost.

She slowly brought the grape to his lips and gently pressed it against them with one finger on the other end. Yes, she was stubborn but he needed the food more than she did and besides, she didn't want it. In her other hand she still held the vine of dark red grapes. They were ripe and sweet, freshly picked as well. She finally sat down as she waited for him to accept the food. Perhaps he was stubborn as she was. Tilting her head to the side, she couldn't help remember a familiar scene that had been between her had her arranged fiance. It had been outside.. they both were rather happy, or he was pretending to be. There was food spread out between them and he hand plucked one of the grapes before bringing it to her lips with a smile. Of course she had accepted it then.. looking into his dark brown eyes.. she should have known better. She decided she would never hurt this slave in that way.. no human being deserved their heart to be ripped out and crushed like that.

Brandon raised an eyebrow at the laugh that reached his ears. The sorrow that filled it was so thick, he was surprised it wasn't tangible. "You refuse? But I know you're hungry." Of course he was hungry. He'd been in that store for too long not to hungry. But he couldn't eat. Not until she did.
He watched as she got off the bed again, walking over to the food cart. His eyes darted over the grapes she picked up, his mouth aching to crush them, to grind them up, even swallow them whole.
As she knelt down in front of him, his eyes locked on the single grape she held between her thumb and finger.
"I don't want it. There's more then enough food for the two of us if that's what you're worried about." He wasn't worried about it, at least not fully. The truth was, he knew for a fact that he could eat all of that food by himself in one sitting if given the chance. But she needed it more than he did.
But, as she pressed the grape to his lips, he felt his will crumbling like an old wall. She needed it more, but she didn't want it, she was even offering it to him. He pressed his lips together, forming a tight, thin line, despite his trembling hands aching to snatch the whole bunch from her.

"Stubborn, aren't you?" she told him as she smiled. He was continuing to refuse the food and she didn't understand why he wouldn't just take it. She simply didn't want it and a slave almost never cared for their master. Sighing, she gently took his hand into her own and slowly made the palm face up before placing the grapes into his hands. Her fingers that were near his lips moved away with the single grape before she slipped it past her own lips and chewed. "Satisfied?" she asked him before getting up. knowing that he wouldn't reply anyway. The scent of all the cooked food filled the room and taking a single breath of it could make even a full man's mouth water.

Getting up, she took a few steps back from him, feeling slightly dizzy due to the fact that she had basically been starving herself. Turning her back towards him, she readjusted her posture to that of an independent woman, or at least of one that wanted to be. It didn't last for long though. Her vision blurred and she stumbled a bit before placing her hand against the wall. Lowering her head, she closed her eyes, taking in a few deep breaths as she tried to regain her previous pose.

Brandon visibly relaxed when she pulled the grape away from his lips, though his fingers twitched when she placed the bunch in his hand. He didn't look at it, didn't dare. He knew that if he did, he would probably eat the whole thing, stem and all. When she ate the single grape, he did feel a tiny bit better, but not much.
The smells that surrounded him tempted him in the worst way possible. He was starving, he knew he was, but he also knew that his mistress was too. Her needs came before his own. Getting unsteadily to his feet, he placed the bunch back on the tray.
However, when she stumbled, he was immediately by her side, hands hovering close to her but not touching, as if he wasn't sure whether or not he should help her.

Tell me, what is a human worth without a heart?

"Would you mind opening the window?" she asked him, her voice strained. She slowly slid down to the ground, planning on getting a glass of water as soon as she was able to stand. Yes, she was stubborn as well. Always determined to do things her way no matter what happened. It wouldn't surprise her if she fainted but she hoped it wouldn't since it would be rather embarrassing. It was strange that she was thinking about being embarrassed like that at a time like this but she didn't question her thoughts as she ran her fingers over her face, feeling a bit weak.

Brandon quickly hurried over to the window, pulling open the curtains and opening the window, a cool, fresh breeze flowing into the room. Turning to find his mistress on the floor, a quiet noise came from his throat, almost sounding like he was being strangled.
Rushing to her side, he grabbed a plate of food, kneeling down in front of her. He knew why she was feeling faint, it was because she wasn't eating. He'd come to know the signs, both in others and himself, when food was necessary.

"Food?" she said lightly, laughing as well even though it was weak. She rested her head on his shoulder after she had opened her eyes. "Water would be nice." Violetta whispered softly, feeling sick and wanting to go to sleep at the same thing. It wasn't a good combination in her opinion. She slowly placed her arm around his neck, as if asking him to stay there without saying any words.
