White Rabbit
Song by Jefferson Airplane

User Image
One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall

And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall
Tell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call
Call Alice
When she was just small

When men on the chessboard
Get up and tell you where to go
And you've just had some kind of mushroom
And your mind is moving low
Go ask Alice
I think she'll know

When logic and proportion
Have fallen sloppy dead
And the White Knight is talking backwards
And the Red Queen's "off with her head!"
Remember what the dormouse said:
"Feed your head
Feed your head
Feed your head"

"The time has come," the Walrus said,
"To talk of many things:
Of shoes—and ships—and sealing-wax—
Of cabbages—and kings—
And why the sea is boiling hot—
And whether pigs have wings."

There exists in the older part of London an asylum. It is an underfunded establishment that receives few patients each year. The doctors and nurses are the only ones who enter and leave the institution. Among those who live in the area, there are rumors about screams piercing the dead of night. The patients remain in their own filthy padded rooms, speaking nonsense to themselves or staring right at the wall.

One day, a new patient is registered into the asylum. She was silent, not speaking or acknowledging anyone's existence. In her arms, she clutched a white rabbit plush doll. The nurses showed her to her room, which was as filthy as all the other rooms. There, she sat down on her bed, her back against the browned white padded wall, and stared out the window. Later that evening, she was led out by a nurse to dinner and then for fun activities. She did nothing.

Now, the other patients in the shoddy place lived in their own world. One thought himself an animal; a cat, to be exact. Another came from a violent background where she was constantly beaten. The third had read Lewis Carroll's books about Alice and became obsessed with them. He spun an insane, imaginary world in his mind where everyone was a certain character. It was the latter who attached himself to the silent newcomer. He followed her around, calling her "Alice" and inviting her to his "tea party." The girl clutched her doll even more to her chest and avoided him at all costs.

The first night was bloodcurdling. Screams of pain and deep grunts echoed through the hallways. The girl lay in her bed, her eyes full moon circles. She didn't sleep the entire night. The next day, the nurses found one of the patients dead in his room. Bloody hand prints wallpapered his room. A syringe lay next to the body; the patient's eyes had been cut out and his heart stabbed several times. In his hand, he clutched a letter written to his imaginary twin brother. Blood was everywhere. The doctors and nurses cleaned up the mess and covered up the accident. The girl heard their frantic whispers in the corners and shivered in fright.

A week later, another patient was brutally murdered. She was found with her throat and wrists slit, a pocket watch at her side. This time, a message was written on the wall in her blood: "I was late for a very important date." A killer was on the loose in the asylum. Worse, he was murdering patients with details similar to the Alice in Wonderland stories. The crazed "Mad Hatter," who lived in the world of Lewis Carroll's Wonderland, was immediately suspected.

Of course, our four patients know it's only a matter of time who the murderer kills next.

[[ "Alice" ]]
Diagnosed with: Avoidant personality disorder

From the beginning, her personality disorder was inevitable. She was born to a rich couple who neither cared for her nor paid attention to her. She greatly vied for their attention; they either ignored her or criticized her for being so needy. In the end, she withdraw from wanting their attention. The same happened at school: she tried to make friends, was shot down by criticism, and withdrew. Her timidity only made her situation worse. She allowed the words to get to her. Eventually, she avoided talking to people, group activities, and any other related activity in general. Her teachers became greatly concerned about her. They made inquiries as to her home situation. A counselor questioned her; she refused to speak. The counselor then turned to her parents. Her parents answered for her as if their daughter was stupid. The counselor explained her severe withdrawal from social situations, inquiring about a mental examination. Her parents waved their hands and them do whatever.

They did as they liked. They examined her and diagnosed her with having avoidant personality disorder. The analysts suggested a top institution to her for slow integration into social situations for others like her. Her parents seized back their control and ended up throwing her in the ramshackle South London Sanatorium.

She brings with her everywhere a white bunny doll, given to her by her aunt who rarely visits her. She secretly yearns for a deep friendship with someone, but she is afraid of more rejection. She keeps herself at bay to protect herself. She spends most of her time staring out the window, writing poetry, singing songs, painting, and reading.

[[ "The Mad Hatter" ]]
Diagnosed with: Histrionic personality disorder

He was born into an asylum to a single, crazed woman. His mother was diagnosed with having paranoid schizophrenia. He never knew who his father was. His mother developed a severe phobia of her own son. Because of this, he was separated from his mother and given a room of his own. At a young age, he began showing mild signs of schizophrenia. The nurses responsible for him brought him to the main doctor. There, he was diagnosed with having a mild form of disorganized schizophrenia.

As time passed, the little boy grew into a delusional young man. He lived halfway between reality and his own world. When he read Lewis Carroll's Alice books, he became completely addicted to the storyline. Before long his own world was Wonderland. He deemed himself the Mad Hatter. Everyone was a pawn; he had yet to find the one he would call "Alice." He dressed seductively and attempted to entice many of the female patients and nurses into being his Alice. None of them relented; he was rejected many times. Each rejection sent him spiraling into a moderate depression. Sometimes his depressions were so severe that he had to take medication to calm himself. Finally, this was brought to the attention of the head doctor. He ran over the Hatter's symptoms and once again diagnosed the young man, this time with histrionic personality disorder.

In a fit of rage, the Hatter's mother killed herself. She was deemed a short, brief funeral service. The Hatter didn't attend. He was transferred to a downscale sanatorium in the south of London. He quickly adjusted to his new home. He was able to discover the Queen of Hearts, the Chesire Cat, the White Rabbit, and the Tweedle twins. Of course, the newest patient fascinated him. Soon, he became obsessed with her and was intent on making her his Alice. But this "Wonderland" pattern was extremely similar to killings that had slowly been making their way around the sanatorium, coincidentally since the Hatter's arrival. Because of his unstable history, the Hatter is quickly suspected of being the murderer. The Hatter doesn't confess anything, so no one knows if it actually is him.

The Hatter enjoys bothering the Cat and the Queen, following "Alice" around and trying to seduce her, having tea parties, and coloring books. He is quite fascinated with the recent "Wonderland" killings.

[[ "The Queen of Hearts" ]]
Diagnosed with: Antisocial personality disorder

She was born to a poor English couple in the slums of southern London. Her father worked as a janitor. He often came home in an alcoholic rage. Her mother was an aspiring fashion designer who ended up working as a the neighborhood seamstress. When drunk, her father frequently beat her mother. In turn, her mother beat her so hard she began to take it out on the kids at school. She was placed in detention and even arrested several times. Other times, she was able to charm her way out of trouble. Eventually, her mother ended up retaliating and killing her father. Her mother was arrested and she was gathered into a foster care. She continued her violence towards others. Social services gathered her and had her examined. She was diagnosed with having antisocial personality disorder and dropped into Southern London for rehabilitation.

In the hospital, she frequently hits and thrashes violently at others, calling, "Off with their head!" Her favorite color is red and her favorite shape a heart. When not violent, she is frequently seen playing with her deck of cards. She was close to the "White Rabbit." Overall, she keeps to herself. She doesn't like "Alice" or "The Mad Hatter."

[[ "The Chesire Cat" ]]
Diagnosed with: Schizotypal personality disorder

No one in his family had the disorder. And no one blamed him for getting it. The "Cat" was born to a fairly average couple in the heart of London. His parents loved him dearly. Once he was old enough to play with other children, they noticed that he acted strangely. He didn't say or do the strange things normal of children. He was afraid of them. Surely, they believed, it must be simply because he was shy. When they passed a pet shop while going for groceries, a dark gray kitten, nearly purple, caught the Cat's eye. He begged for it day and night until his parents relented on the day of his birthday. The cat, who he called "Barbados," was his most treasured companion, and Barbados loved him in return.

His parents weren't worried about the time he spent with his pet. Until, of course, he began mimicking it. The odd behavior continued and gradually progressed to a point where the Cat dressed up like it. He acted like a cat at school and at home. His parents were deathly worried and had him taken to see the counselor. The counselor suggested a therapist. The therapist suggested a mental doctor. The mental doctor examined him, attributing his symptoms to a personality order. He was diagnosed with being a schizotypal.

Life for the Cat and his parents went down from there. His behavior became extremely antisocial. Withdrawing from attending school altogether, he stayed home and played with Barbados. His parents took Barbados from him. As a young child, he was taken from his parents and shoved into the South London Sanatorium. There, he kept to himself and was happy believing he was a cat.

Leisurely, the Cat enjoys mid-afternoon naps, creamy milk, sweets, playing with his toys, and being near his new friend "Alice."
