• Fire Gazing, or Pyromancy (from Greek pyros, “fire,” and manteia, “divination”) is the art of divination by means of fire.
History of Fire Gazing:
• Due to the importance of fire in society from the earliest of times, it is quite likely that pyromancy was one of the earlier forms of divination. It is said that in Greek society, virgins at the Temple of Athena in Athens regularly practiced pyromancy. It is also possible that followers of Hephaestus, the Greek god of fire and the forge, practiced pyromancy. • In Renaissance magic, pyromancy was classified as one of the seven "forbidden arts," along with necromancy, geomancy, aeromancy, hydromancy, chiromancy (palmistry), and spatulamancy (scapulimancy).
Forms of Pyromancy:
The most basic form of pyromancy is that in which the diviner observes flames, from a sacrificial fire, a candle, or another source of flame, and interprets the shapes that he or she sees within them. There are several variations on pyromancy, however, some of which are as follows:
• Alomancy, divination by salt, one type of which involves casting salt into a fire • Botanomancy, divination by burning plants • Capnomancy, divination by smoke; light, thin smoke that rose straight up was a good omen; otherwise, a bad one. • Causinomancy, divination by burning (non-specific as to the object burned) • Daphnomancy (also, Empyromancy), divination by burning laurel leaves • Osteomancy, divination using bones, one type of which involves heating to produce cracks • Plastromancy, divination using turtle plastrons; in China, this was done by heating pits carved into them. • Scapulimancy, divination by scapulae; in Asia and North America, this was done pyromantically. • Sideromancy, divination by burning straw with an iron (Greek:Sideros)
Interpreting Images presented by Fire:
• Many of the methods of interpretation can be taken from what was learned when we studied Dream Divination. • It is important to note that, for all but the most experienced or attuned Seers, what is seen in the fire is seldom meant to be taken literally. • If one is properly attuned to the forces and to their own Sight, they may see a pure, unobstructed vision or what is to come. • However, most will only see symbols. • Details like emotions are hard to place and generally require another detail to throw the meaning into the light. • Details like themes can be very telling, but are very much open to interpretation. • Details like objects are usually tied to some sort of symbolism; how they are presented, or not presented in the example of the missing pants, is more important than the object itself. • People are a very interesting thing to note; their presence can mean many things. Just because a person is in your dream doesn't mean that they'll be present when the events being foretold take place, which is the general belief. Rather, it can mean that you would want them there, or that they represent something you will need. The presence of a brave friend can be because you'll need your courage; a wise friend could mean you'll need wisdom.
Homework: Spend some time Fire Gazing and attempt to interpret what you see. Make a record of it, and attempt to interpret anything of note.

When the quills had stopped and the eyes were on her, she smiled.
"Alright, now, I'd like you all to sit in your seat like so, or on the floor, if you like. Sapphire stepped into the class and immediately started jotting down the notes. And when the professor started, she sat in the floor. She would rather sit in the floor when in any sort of position... She closed her eyes and followed the professors words precisely. Calming herself and letting everything drip away. She breathed in and out slowly, and when she was sure she was calm, she opened her eyes and looked to the fire. At first? There was nothing, and when Sapphire was about to give up, it almost looked like eyes opened in the fire... Big, red, evil eyes. They startled the girl and she leaned back as if to get away and looked around. She had totally just freaked out! With a few gasping breaths she looked back to the fire and saw nothing. She started trying to calm herself... But she wasn't sure what was going on any more...

Lesson 1: Palmistry
The Definition of Palmistry:
• Palmistry, or chiromancy, consists of the practice of evaluating a person's character or future life by "reading" the palm of that person's hand. Various "lines" ("heart line", "life line", etc.) and "mounts" (or bumps) (chirognomy), purportedly suggest interpretations by their relative sizes, qualities, and intersections. In some traditions, readers also examine characteristics of the fingers, fingernails, fingerprints and palmar skin patterns (dermatoglyphics), skin texture and color, shape of the palm, and flexibility of the hand.
Reading the Palm:
• Unlike many other forms of Divination, the purpose of Palmistry is to look into a person's entire life, rather than to isolate particular events. It cannot be used to divine anything specific or answer a specific question. Rather, it tells a person the sort of life they can expect to live. • A reader usually begins by reading the person's 'dominant hand' (the hand he or she writes with or uses the most)(sometimes considered to represent the conscious mind, whereas the other hand is subconscious). In some traditions of palmistry, the other hand is believed to carry hereditary or family traits, or, depending on the palmist's cosmological beliefs, to convey information about past-life or karmic conditions.
Hand Shape:
Depending on the type of palmistry practiced, and the type of reading being performed, palmists may look at various qualities of the hand, including the shapes and lines of the palm and fingers; the color and texture of the skin and fingernails; the relative sizes of the palm and fingers; the prominence of the knuckles; and numerous other attributes of the hands. In most schools of palmistry, hand shapes are divided into four or 11 major types, sometimes corresponding to the Classical elements or temperaments. Hand shape is believed to indicate character traits corresponding to the type indicated (i.e., a "Fire hand" would exhibit high energy, creativity, short temper, ambition, etc. - all qualities believed to be related to the Classical element of Fire). Although variations abound, the most common classifications used by modern palmists:
• Earth hands are generally identified by broad, square palms and fingers, thick or coarse skin, and ruddy color. The length of the palm from wrist to the bottom of the fingers is usually equal to the length of the fingers. • Air hands exhibit square or rectangular palms with long fingers and sometimes protruding knuckles, low-set thumbs, and often dry skin. The length of the palm from wrist to the bottom of the fingers is usually equal to the length of the fingers. • Water hands are seeable by the short, sometimes oval-shaped palm, with long, flexible, conical fingers. The length of the palm from wrist to the bottom of the fingers is usually less than the width across the widest part of the palm, and usually equal to the length of the fingers. • Fire hands are characterized by a square or rectangular palm, flushed or pink skin, and shorter fingers. The length of the palm from wrist to the bottom of the fingers is usually greater than the length of the fingers.
The number and quality of lines can also be included in the hand shape analysis; in some traditions of palmistry, Earth and Water hands tend to have fewer, deeper lines, while Air and Fire hands are more likely to show more lines with less clear definition.
The Lines:
The three lines found on almost all hands, and generally given most weight by palmists:
• The heart line is the first of the major lines examined by a reader and represents love and attraction. It is found towards the top of the palm, under the fingers. In some traditions, the line is read as starting from the edge of the palm under the little finger and flowing across the palm towards the thumb; in others, it is seen as starting under the fingers and flowing toward the outside edge of the palm. Palmists interpret this line to represent matters of the heart, that is, more literally, our emotional living; it is therefore believed to be an insight into how the emotional sides of our mindframes will act out and be acted upon during our lifetimes, and often said, to what extent we possess emotional reservoirs within us, for example, a chained or gridded heart line (or emotional line) is often seen in people who are highly strung, nervous and draw upon emotional strength and insight to attain their ambitions, i.e. they wear their 'emotions' on their sleeves, often to draw strength. Such chaining or gridding on the heart line (emotional line) is often seen in intensely creative artists such as musicians and writers, as well as deeply driven scientists. Dealing with emotions, the line is also claimed to indicate romantic perspectives and intimate relationships, again, a chained or gridded heart line is said to point to a flirtatious attitude to love, and one which can be prone to fall in love easily. On a physical level, the heart line is indirectly associated with heart health, moreso through the effects that emotions can have on the body such as with blood pressure. A chained heart line is often associated with high blood pressure, but also of an 'adrenaline junkie' attitude in life. • The next line identified by palmists is the head line. This line starts at the edge of the palm under the index finger and flows across the palm towards the outside edge. Often, the head line is joined with the life line at inception. Palmists generally interpret this line to represent the person's mind and the way it works, including learning style, communication style, intellectualism, and thirst for knowledge. It is also believed to indicate a preference for creative or analytical approaches to information (i.e., right brain or left brain). • The life line is perhaps the most controversial line on the hand. This line extends from the edge of the palm above the thumb and travels in an arc towards the wrist. This line is believed to represent the person's vitality and vigor, physical health and general well being. The life line is also believed to reflect major life changes, including cataclysmic events, physical injuries, and relocations. Contrary to popular belief, modern palmists generally do not believe that the length of a person's life line is tied to the length of a person's life.
The combined length of these three main lines (heart, head, life) can also be used. If this combined length is longer than a persons foot they may be over bearing. However, if it is shorter they may give in too easily to other people. A similar length suggests a well balanced individual.
Additional major lines or variations include:
• A simian crease, or fusing of the heart and head lines, has special significance in that both emotional as well as reasoning nature have to be studied from this line alone. The peculiar line is thought to be a combination of the head and heart lines on such hands that are separately marked on the rest of the hands. • The fate line runs from the bottom of the palm near the wrist, up through the center of the palm towards the middle finger. This line is believed to be tied to the person's life path, including school and career choices, successes and obstacles. Sometimes this line is thought to reflect circumstances beyond the individual's control, or alternately the person's choices and their consequences. • Sun line - parallel to the Fate Line, under the ring finger; believed to indicate fame or scandal • Girdle of Venus - starts between the little and ring fingers, runs in a rough arc under the ring and middle fingers to end between the middle and pointer fingers; thought to relate to emotional intelligence and the ability to manipulate • Union lines - short horizontal lines found on the percussive edge of the palm between the Heart Line and the bottom of the little finger; believed to indicate close relationships, sometimes - but not always - romantic. • Mercury line - runs from the bottom of the palm near the wrist, up through the palm towards the little finger; purported to be an indicator of persistent health issues, business acumen, or skill in communication. • Travel lines - these are horizontal lines found on the percussive edge of the palm between the wrist and the heart line; each line is said to represent a trip taken by the subject - the longer the line, the more important the trip is to the subject. • Other markings - these include stars, crosses, triangles, squares, tridents, and rings under each of the fingers; their supposed impact and meaning varies by location on the palm and freedom from other interfering lines. • "Apollo line" - the Apollo line means to have a fortunate life; it travels from the Mount of the Moon at the wrist to beneath the Apollo finger. • "Ominous line" - crosses life line and forms 'x' shape; very bad sign to find; palm readers will often not mention this line because of the worry it causes to the person being read. Common indicators of ominous line include 'M' being formed by other lines.
The Mounts:
In order to be able to interpret the lines—and their effects on our relationships—it is essential to have an understanding of the underlying mounts. The hand is divided into seven segments called mounts. Each mount relates to a corresponding planet with a specific portfolio. The mounts of the hand provide a tangible record of how we deal with each of these planetary influences, and what our challenges are. The mounts also represent the colors in the spectrum of the rainbow. The more each mount begins to reflect the characteristics of its own specific light frequency, the more representative it becomes of the superconscious soul or light within. The mounts are Luna, Venus, Mars (formed by its negative and positive poles), Jupiter, Saturn, Sun, Mercury and Rahu and Ketu. Following is a brief description of the mounts and the specific characteristics that they reflect.
• The mount of Luna (or Moon - represents the first stage of our evolutionary process. Luna stands for the original plan of creation, as in the Bible quotation, “in the beginning was the Word...” As such, it relates to the collective unconscious as well as to each person’s individual receptivity to tune into that creative source. Luna pertains to the qualities of perception, creativity, imagination and sensory awareness. • Venus - next in the sequence of mounts, represents the actual physical manifestation of the “concept” which was initiated in Luna. (“... and the Word was made flesh....”*). Venus represents the actual cellular makeup—or energy—that manifests itself in physical form. It shows the condition of the body and how at home we feel in our physical form. The mount of Venus reflects the presence or absence of qualities such as harmony, kindness, grace, charm and love. It reflects our degree of physical and sexual health, sensuality and beauty. • Mars negative - is the next focus of attention for the unfolding human soul. Symbolically, it relates to the mobilization of the spark of incarnate energy originally conceived and then brought into being through Luna and then Venus. Mars negative stands for our energy, which, when not properly harnessed and channeled, can lead to exhaustion, or possibly to anger and aggression. • Jupiter - represents the awakening of the conscious mind. In India, it is referred to as the guru or dispeller of darkness. It speaks of our sense of purpose—what role we want to play in life. Jupiter stands for ambition, confidence, leadership and justice. • Saturn - indicates the necessity to search within. It represents the alchemist who is able to synthesize the experiences of Jupiter in order to extract a deeper meaning of life. Saturn stands for wisdom, co-ordination and discernment. • The Sun - in our hand indicates our desire to share all that has been learned from the profound nature of Saturn. It is referred to as atma and represents our soul. The Sun shows that aspect within us which can transcend any limitations. Success, charisma and integrity are all characteristic of the Sun. • Mercury - In India, stands for the Buddha and reflects an “enlightened” consciousness. It relates to our involvement in the world, and also our ability to be detached from the fruits of our actions. Mercury denotes intuition, spontaneity and the ability to communicate effortlessly. • Mars - Next lies the mount of Mars positive (which, with Mars negative—located on the opposite side of the palm—forms the Mars galaxy). Whereas Mars negative relates to our physical energy, Mars positive deals with our mental strength. Positive characteristics include endurance, persistence, and a calm mental state. • Rahu and Ketu - are inextricably intertwined. Ketu represents the kinds of circumstances we attracted in the past and our attitudes towards them, whereas Rahu relates to our immediate environment. A famous Sanskrit verse tells us that “our present is the result of all our yesterdays, and the future depends on how well we live today.” This sums up the relationship between Rahu and Ketu.
Ketu is our karmic account book, whose balance sheet portrays the entire record of our thoughts, attitudes, and behavior of the past. Rahu reflects the kind of environment we are likely to attract in the present, and how receptive we are to either making the most of it, or limiting its potentials by resisting opportunities that come our way. From a metaphysical viewpoint, as the mounts begin to express the ideal characteristics for which they stand—for example, the objective perception of Luna, the unconditional love of Venus, the calmly active energy of Mars—they consequently begin to radiate at their specific light frequencies in the color spectrum. The result is pure radiant light.

spaceDrusilla entered the classroom in a daze. She was quite late, she was certain of it. Where did the time go? She'd been so caught up in her cards and runes that she'd completely lost track of it... or perhaps she'd simply stared off into space for a couple of hours. Both were equally possible, after all... except that when she arrived in the classroom and checked the clock, she was actually on time. She frowned; the clock in her office must be wrong, then. She'd have to fix it... if she remembered. Which she probably wouldn't, of course. She blinked a moment, then smiled at her students, her arms sweeping open in a grand gesture."Hello, my little ducks, and welcome to Divination. I am Professor Somerset. Now then, in this class, you will need to have an open mind, open eyes, and patience. Divination is a powerful art, but difficult. Also, there will be no disrespecting of my craft, or of the abilities of fellow students... now then! With that unpleasantness out of the way, we can begin."
spaceShe paused long enough to let the students absorb her words, and long enough to get just a tad distracted... what was she looking at, though? She scowled for a moment, shoved the visions away, and smiled widely again at her students before launching into the lecture."Palmistry is an old and rather odd form of fortune telling. It is the method of looking at a person's hand and reading the lines to determine what direction their life might take. Emphasis on might, of course, since, as with all forms of Divination, it is a fluid art which is rarely definite. Palmistry is a fairly easy form of Divination for students to begin learning, but it is also one that takes years to master. Its tools are simple, your mind and your hands. Because of this, it is one of the most easily accessible methods of fortune telling. The more practiced you are at the art of Palmistry, the more detailed your readings will become."She stopped then, curious. She had, of course, seen this play out, but in different ways each time... how would it happen then?
spaceThe Seer's eyes glazed, and she shifted a bit, her head tilting in an odd manner, rather like a bird's, her eyes unblinking and unseeing. After a moment, she gave her head a light shake, and smiled again."Where was I? Oh, yes. On the board, you can see notes on the day's lesson. Please copy them down. While you are doing so, think of your own answers for these questions; How can reading the lines on a person's palm tell their future? Is this a feasible method for making a prediction? Any student who contributes anything worthwhile to the discussion will earn House Points."She waited patiently, eager to hear what her students had to say. It would tell her much about them... but didn't she already know? Sometimes she forgot...

Jasper took a seat in Divination right after world studies. Honestly he didn’t think he was going to do that great come the OWL test but he figured he’d stick with his classes. Sitting down he started copying down the wall of notes on the board. He didn’t mind taking notes so it wasn’t that big of a problem and the idea of palm reading didn’t seem overly complicated. It probably was the easiest form of Divination. Listening to Professor Somerset as he continued copying the notes Jasper thought about the questions she was asking.
Once finished, Jasper raised his hand before speaking. “Palmistry, it’s just a general outlook on what someone’s live is going to be like, right? I mean… it doesn’t tell you key events.”Falling silent again he might have gone into left field but how accurate could that really be? Not that parts of it weren’t accurate.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~Iñigo Albion-Alexandré
~~~~~~~~~~~15|Fifth Year|Ravenclaw|Seer
"The best way to keep something bad from happening is to see it ahead of time..."
Iñigo had walked into class a tad late, but found out that he was one of the only one's there at the moment. There were a few, but what happened to everyone else, did they sleep in or something? Well...like he did anyway. He had no idea, but he instantly apologized to Somerset, before taking a seat and reading what was on the board and taking notes.
Instantly getting into the lesson, he tried to clear his mind a bit, but was utterly failing. Why? Probably because he was thinking about Lexine...and some of his friends, mainly wondering what they were up to. Jasper obviously should be here, so he found his mind picturing the kid's face coming in late. He found it very hard to clear his mind of these, but after about ten minutes of a meditation period, he found himself blank. Opening his eyes, he stared into the fire, but found what he had expected...just about nothing, but a few colors had resonated a bit. A seemingly furious shade of red inside of the fire and and then a cooling shade of blue. It almost made him wonder if it had to do with the Quidditch game, because he was furious that Lexine had gotten hit and but he calmed as the game went on. But unfortunately, he didn't think they pertained to the past and the thinking obviously broke his concentration.
Now, he had to go through the meditation over again, before trying again.
"and you can't see it if you refuse to face the possibility."
Palmistry, or chiromancy, consists of the practice of evaluating a person's character or future life by "reading" the palm of that person's hand.
Homework:Write a short essay on Palmistry.

spaceDrusilla entered the classroom in a daze.
Palmistry, or chiromancy, consists of the practice of evaluating a person's character or future life by "reading" the palm of that person's hand.
Although variations abound, the most common classifications used by modern palmists: • Almost everyone, regardless of whether they've studied palmistry or not, recognizes earth hands on another person - they're the people with bear paws! Their palms are large, expansive, wide and long. Their fingers are generous and wide, neither long nor short. Often, they are very dry hands as well, and may even appear chapped. The wide palms show a mind that is often reflective in nature, and may evidence itself in a person who is quiet, although not necessarily shy. The energy presents itself like that of the mountain; steady, reliable, and slow, or perhaps even resistant, to change. These are the hands of the sensible, functional, "get stuff done" kind of people. Earth-handed folks are good with their hands, and often have careers and/or hobbies that involve working with their hands. They may be expert woodworkers, or make a living as a massage therapist, but they each can attest to having hands that "can think for themselves." They are not overly emotional people • Air hands are long and narrow, often elegant in appearance on either a man or woman. The hand itself is a dry hand, often with long fingernails and/or long nail beds, and a long palm as well. Being one of the most graceful shapes, air hands are often seen on hand models. In palmistry, the person's mental energy is imagined as originating at the wrist and traveling the length of the hand to the fingers, where it is put into action and made manifest in the world. The long palm, therefore, indicates a mind, which spends a great deal of time with its thoughts until they are released through the fingers and out into the world. Long fingers are also indicative of an active mind, perhaps to the point of restlessness. Quite often, air-handed people are self-studiers and pride themselves in being learned in many different aspects. Ideal bookkeepers, they have minds with the capacity to hold and manage lots of detailed bits of information. And, they are often the ones who find themselves bored at tasks that are too easy, or those which don't keep the mind active or challenged enough. Air allows little to no resistance - air-handed people move very fast through life; they think fast, they talk fast and they walk fast. They're usually the ones to whom everyone is saying, "Slow down already!" Of the five hand types, air hands are one of the most likely to take an interest in and/or practice psychic phenomena. • Water hands are long, much like air hands, but the quality in water hands is their immediate dampness, or moistness, apparent upon first touch. While it is true that some people occasionally have sweaty palms, this tendency goes beyond the phenomenon to be the person's regular state. Their palms are often soft and rounded in appearance, with high mounts, showing an emotional softness and a natural state of charged emotional awareness. They can sometimes have pink palm mounds and fingertips as well, and the shape of the hand looks much like a heart in how the long fingers will taper together, stemming from the rounded palm. The energy of the hand presents itself as soft and yielding, like a current of water. These folks are the highly emotional ones, the "softies" through and through but often with a heart of gold, and a super-sized sense of compassion in how they greet the world. They are often so wonderfully self-effacing; they will laugh when you call them a "softie" and nod in complete acknowledgment. However, like the water creature the crustacean, if they have not learned to cultivate some sort of protective shell as part of their ego, water-handed people may find themselves feeling harshly abused by the cruelty of the real world, which often fails to live up to their own idealistic expectations. Water-handed folks are also greatly influenced by the currents in their lives, both positively and negatively. Their extremely emotional nature can lead to destructive or neurotic behaviours when not managed well. They can often have substance issues, especially when attempting to self-medicate their emotional state, and/or may battle with depression. Water-handed people are the ones you want for your very best friends - the ones you call when you feel terrible, and just hearing your water friend's voice will make you feel better. Somehow they always understand, even when they don't say more than two words. They are often natural Empaths, and as such may find crowd situations uncomfortable to the point of psychic claustrophobia. • People with fire hands have expansive palms, wide and generous, sometimes boxy in appearance, as well as short fingers. Because of the shortness of fingers in conjunction with the wide palm, fire hands can look "stubby." If they are extremely stubby in appearance, it is often a sign of a very stubborn nature, especially when coupled with wide knuckles on the fingers. Their short palms indicate a mind that is sometimes hasty in its fired-up state and how it approaches decision-making. The beauty of fire-handed people is they are the ones who conceive brilliant new ideas and convey tremendous fire and passion behind their beliefs… at least, for a little while. The downside to fire-handed people is that their passions are sometimes short lived, and they can have difficulty following through with the things they begin, such as new projects or inventions. While the idea is burning inside, their passion will possess them and drive them into almost frenzied creative states of manic production… followed by a rapid, and often inexplicable, cooling-off period in which the idea may die if it is not nurtured, or met with a cultivated sense of discipline. Fire-handed people are ideal salesmen as they can talk just about anyone into just about anything, and often so sweetly, or politely, that you'll find yourself grinning and nodding while jumping through their every hoop. Their persuasive nature, coupled with their innate passions, makes them exciting speakers. They are often extremely charismatic, the centre of everyone's attention. • The number and quality of lines can also be included in the hand shape analysis; in some traditions of palmistry, Earth and Water hands tend to have fewer, deeper lines, while Air and Fire hands are more likely to show more lines with less clear definition.
Homework:Draw a sketch of your hand; this week, focus on the outline of the shape. The rest will be added in as the year progresses.

spaceDrusilla sat behind her desk, staring forward, waiting. She watched the clock on the opposite wall, her head bobbing back and forth, left and right, tick, tock, tick, tock, tick tock... her students should be arriving any minute now. As they filed in she sat up straight and gave a smile, her eyes bright. Today's lesson should be easy, particularly compared to some of the others. It was just building more on what'd been discussed the previous week, after all."One of the key factors in reading one's palm is the shape of the hand. The length of the fingers, the shape of the palm, all of this can affect the rest of the reading. It is in the most minute of details that you will find the most interesting things. Hands are generally sorted into four categories, based on the elements, Air, Fire, Earth and Water. If you read the descriptions on the board, and observe your own hands, it should not be difficult to categorize them. My own hands, for instance, are Air Hands, characterized by their length, delicacy, and that they are, unlike Water Hands, often quite dry. This is indicative that I am a very inward-thinking person, quite drawn in my own thoughts."She stopped then, curious.
While you are doing so, think of your own answers for these questions; Do you believe that there is any accuracy to the shape of one's hands and their personality and disposition? Do you believe that your hands, as you see them, fit neatly into one of the above categories, or are they a combination of two or more? Do the traits associated with this Shape or Shapes seem to match up? If you'd like to ask a question, or contribute to the discussion, please feel free. House Points will be given to those who contribute."She waited patiently, eager to hear what her students had to say. It would tell her much about them... but didn't she already know? Sometimes she forgot...
