The word is derived from Latin, acus meaning "needle", and ignus meaning "torch". It is the incantation used in Match to Needle exercises, and is pronounced aku-sig-nis.
Looking back at our categories in Chapter 1, this spell falls under the Transformation Transfiguration branch. It is used to transform a match into a needle. This is one of the most basic Transfiguration spells and is commonly practiced in all beginner Transfiguration classes.
The spell itself does not cast any light or noise, but strictly transforms a match pointed at with the caster's wand into a needle.
The level of this Transfiguration is basic.

Reparifarge
This spell is the basic spell for Untransfiguration. It should be used to help undo mistakes during transfiguration as well as to revert an object that has been transfigured back into its original form. The incantation for this spell is Reparifarge, or for easier pronunciation, "re-par-ee-far-je."
Please Remember!
As these spells always require the use of the formula for transfiguration, it shall be listed here. Please keep in mind the correct amounts for each part of the equation.

I had a dream the other night About how we only get one life Woke me up right after two Stayed awake and stared at you So I wouldn't lose my mind
Rick leaned against the desk as he waited for students to file in. He wasn't that worried about this lesson, not by a long shot. This lesson was certainly one of those that needed to be covered anyway. It was the most basic spell in Transfiguration, after all. Closing the door with a flick of his wand, he looked at the class with a wry expression. "Hello, and glad to see all of you today. I hope you practised Reparifarge enough last lesson, because we get to have fun with transfiguring items today. Don't worry, we won't be doing animal transfiguration until later in the year. Instead, we are going to be working on the most basic spell of them all, Acusignis."
He tapped the board, and then walked over to his desk where he took a match from behind his ear and held it up for everyone to see. "Acusignis is the spell that turns a match like this, into a needle like this." took his wand out and tapped the match. "Acusignis." Instantly it transformed into a silver needle, perfectly straight and pointy. He held it up for everyone to see, and then handed it off for people to pass around. "Go ahead and pass that around. As you can see, the match was easily transformed into a needle with this spell, and while it may not seem like much, it is devilishly tricky to do the first time around. I had to cast the spell myself three times before my match even started looking vaguely like a needle, and it wasn't until later I was able to transfigure a match into a needle properly. This spell is perfect however for working on your concentration, your will, and your ability to focus on the spell itself to successfully transfigure."
Getting up from the desk, he grabbed a small box from the desk and started passing out matches. "Now, I want to see you work on the spell itself. Remember, work on pronunciation and focus. Don't worry about the equation regarding Transfiguration right yet. It's easier if you don't think about it and instead work on will, the way you say the spell, and focus. Those three themselves actually do more for transfiguring anything than the other variables. Concentration, will, and pronunciation are the three variables you control, so work on those the most. I'll be walking around and checking people's progress on the spell, and if you need help, just raise your hand and I can come around." He then walked back to the front of the classroom and started watching the students work as he leaned against his desk, getting up every now and then to look over his students' progress.

Rey took her seat, idly wondering when her excitement would wear and she's start dreading her classes. Not anytime soon, she thought, looking at the notes Professor Drage wrote on the board. She wrote those down quickly and listened as the professor explained and then demonstrated the spell, examining the needle when it was passed to her.
When she received a match, Rey first practised the incantation a few times before raising her wand, pointing it at the match, and clearly saying, "Acusignis." Nothing happened. As expected of my first try. She repeated the incantation, concentrating harder, and this time the match partly turned silver. However, after multiple attempts, there hadn't been anymore improvement and Rey could feel her frustration increasing with each attempt. She sighed and took a deep breathe, trying to reign in her anger and tried to focus as much as possible. "Acusignis," she said once again and to her delight, most of the match turned silver. My focus then, she thought, and continued to try.

Oh, great. From a stick of wood that bestows children fiery power (on second thought, this description greatly fit a wizard's wand) to a thin strip of metal that could poke anyone's eyes out. This lesson would probably end in tears, one way or another.
When Cecil got his match, he didn't waste any time before trying out the incantation. "Acusignis." The match fizzled slightly, but otherwise didn't do much. "Acusignis." It fizzled slightly harder.
Cecil huffed.
Pronunciation wasn't the issue. He was also focused, obviously, because otherwise, he wouldn't be attending classes (history of magic is the sole exception to this clause). So the issue had to be "will".
I want this match to turn into a needle. If this wasn't the issue, Cecil's dignity would probably throw itself off a cliff. "Acusignis," he chanted as he tapped the match. The match, immediately, turned into a needle. It wasn't shiny or perfect, but it was still a needle.
With the strap of his satchel around his shoulders, Gavin entered the class and quickly took his seat. Copying his notes, he practiced the pronunciation quietly under his breath as the professor continued his lecture. When it was time, he held his wand firmly in his right hand, pointed his wand at the match and said the incantation. But nothing happened. After a few tries, the match was smooth and slick and pointed, but still wood. He frowned, reversed the spell and tried again. Twenty minutes and half a dozen incomplete transfigurations later, Gavin sighed and buried his nose in his books hoping to figure out what he was doing wrong.

Richard was pretty sure that transfigurations class was going to be the end of him. He sucked at spell work. Can you really even call someone a wizard if they couldn’t do magic well? He didn’t think so. However, others beg to differ. Sitting in class Richard didn’t think there was going to be much hope for him to turn a match into a needle. If his own professor took three tries, he was doomed for failure. However perhaps he’d surprise himself. Doubtful, but how knows.
Copying his notes down, Richard then turned to the match on his desk. He was worried about it as he turned back at the incantation. “As-u-sign-is… A-kyoo-sign-is… Aku-sig-nis…” After several minutes he finally managed to say the incantation correctly. Looking to the match again he took a breath. With his wand in hand Richard tried to go for it.“Acusignis.”He said pointing his wand at the match. Nothing happened…“Acusignis!”He tried with more force. It seemed to flicker a litter. Trying a few more times, he managed to get the match to what looked like a decent looking needle on his fifth or sixth try.

Saio still wasn’t all that sure about transfigurations. It still seemed so complicated. However she’d done alright she supposed last class. Granted that was just putting something back to normal. She was going to try and remain optimistic. Taking a seat she took detailed notes on how to transform a match to a needle. Looking at the needle that was being passed around, she wondered just how many times it would take for her to make it work.
Getting the go ahead Saio looked at her own match.“Okay… I can do this…”She told herself taking out her wand. “Acusignis.” She said getting nothing more than a shimmer and possibly a dull point. Sighing she tried again… and again… and again… and you get the idea… She was doing as well as Gavin was beside her. Only difference was he had what looked like a wooden needle and she had a metallic match. “What could I possibly be doing wrong…?”She questioned herself knowing she as focused as she could be. If only it was easy…

Kazu entered and looked around, feeling sheepish as he felt like he was late. Which he was, technically. This was going to be bad, wasn't it? He looked at the board and wrote down notes, and then looked at the needle being passed around. Wait, was that a match originally? He couldn't tell to be honest, and considering that the professor mentioned that hehad problems with the spell initially himself, felt intimidated. Grinding his teeth however, he decided to try his hand at it and held up his wand. He then faltered, taking a deep breath before concentrating on the spell as much as he could. Acasignis. No, I mean Acusignes! Ugh!" The match, which had been just a plain match, burst into flame at the tip which prompted Kazu to bite his lip and wince as the fire quickly ate the match. He meekly rose a hand to request a new match, certain that he was going to do terribly at the new one.

I had a dream the other night About how we only get one life Woke me up right after two Stayed awake and stared at you So I wouldn't lose my mind
Rick leaned against the desk as he waited for students to file in. He had prepared the lesson carefully and figured the class was ready for the next step in transfiguration. He knew that the spell was more difficult than changing a match to a needle, especially since they would be working on something living this time instead of something inanimate. "Hello, and glad to see all of you today. We had plenty of practice with match to needle, so the next step in transfiguration is to work on something living. While I know that this might be a bit more difficult since some of you are undoubtedly uneasy about casting magic at something alive, I can assure you that as long as you have been practicing Reparifarge like I asked you to, you can undo any damage that you cause without difficulty. If not, I can reverse any damage you might have caused."
He then gestured to the board, knowing that it was in plain vew with the lesson for the day. "Today we are working on the spell Cochleafors, which changes snails into teapots. This is a good beginner's spell for students as it gives you a feel for transforming more complex items into your intended target, and yet doesn't have the same complexity levels as say a vertebrae." He took out his wand and approached a small box on the table next to him. Picking up a snail from inside, he held it up for examination before he tapped the creature with his wand. "Cochleafors." The snail stiffened for a moment and then transformed into a teapot, one with a swirl design along its base and lid. He held it up carefully for everyone to view before he handed that off to a student. "Go ahead and pass that around. As you can see, the teapot doesn't have any vestiges of what once made it a snail, though some wizards enjoy making their teapots have something about them to suggest their original form such as the swirl decoration I added to mine and perhaps even small snails that are incorporated into the paint job of the teapot. That is entirely up to the caster, but I would like to see nothing suggesting that it was once a snail about your attempts with the spell."
Getting up from the desk, he grabbed the box from the desk and started passing out snails. "Now, I want to see you work on the spell itself. Just remember to work on focus, pronunciation, and will when you cast the spell. The three components you can control. If you want to, you can even concentrate on the look of the teapot that you are creating to assist with your work. I'll be walking around and checking people's progress on the spell, and if you need help, just raise your hand and I can come around." He then walked back to the front of the classroom and started watching the students work as he leaned against his desk, getting up every now and then to look over his students' progress.

Rey dragged her feet into Transfiguration, exhausted, greeting Professor Drage unenthusiastically as she did. She'd woken up with a sore throat and a headache that steadily grew worse as the day went on. Getting sick is definitely what I need now, she thought irritably as she sank into her seat and took out her wand and books. She'd go to the Hospital Wing after class but until then; she'd have to suffer.
Ignoring her throbbing head, Rey took down the notes written on the board as Professor Drage spoke passing to watch his demonstration before continuing. She finished just before the transfigured snail was passed to her and she examined it carefully. Knowing how to reverse the effects of the transfiguration helped quell her instinctive horror at the snail's plight and she passed the teapot to her next classmate.
As she waited to receive a snail, she pondered the merits of slamming her head against the table repeatedly; it would help with the pain but would draw the attention of her classmates. When she was handed a snail, she couldn't help but coo at it despite her headache. It was adorable and Rey felt no small amount of guilt for what she was about to do. After muttering the spell, she waved her wand and said "Cochleafors." Well, that's what she tried, it came out raspy and slurred and Rey cursed as the snail did absolutely nothing. She tried again but her throat and head distracted her and Rey watched with aggravation as the snail shifted into... something that didn't resemble a teapot at all. There's no way I'm leaving this class without mastering this spell, with a new wave of determination, mind over matter. She used Reparifarge; which thankfully worked, and started anew. After many attempts, Rey finally leant back as she looked at her transfigured teapot with pride; she'd done it. She then closed her eyes and rubbed the sides of her head slowly; the exercise did not help her headache at all. At least this was the last class for the day.

Vito was happy to finally have a class he could find some use in, though he was not much of a tea drinker since he was more of a coffee person but the idea of turning the slimy snails into something someone would want else would want. Maybe he could get a sail farm and just sell teapots to people. If only he could get a matching tea set to go along with the pots.
Vito blinked and shook his head, he was losing focus he'd first need to turn the creatures into the teapot. He looked at the snail and imagined it turning into the teapot, the shape of the teapot, the gloss of it It would have to be something he'd want to drink from. "Cochleafors."
Vito said as the snail grew and took somewhat of the shape but was clearly still alive, and moving around.... That was a horrifying experience "Reparifarge." The cthulhu-ish horror changed back into a snail. The boy tried a few more times with better results till he got a pink teapot with a sunflower on it... Well he was not one for the design on it but at least it would work, maybe some grandmother somewhere would like such a teapot. He glanced over at Ray and saw she was having a hard time, hearing her say the spell name he could tell she was not feeling well. "Miss Whyte it's clear your not feeling well, if you'd like I can escort you to the hospital wing."
Rey looked up when she heard Vito address her. She was sure he wasn't supposed to look that blurry, it took her a few moments of squinting and concentrating to realise that he'd offered her something and even longer to gather her thoughts and answer. "No, it's fine Vito, thanks. I can go after class." Rey was grateful for the offer but she was sure she could last until then end of the lesson; she didn't want to make a commotion or trouble Vito unnecessarily. The drummer behind her skull told her otherwise. "And you can just call me Rey. Only my old teachers call me Miss Whyte and usually when I'm in trouble."

Transfiguration is, at it's most basic, transforming one object into another. This is usually accomplished by magical means. However, it is not simply changing something's appearance into something else's, it is actually changing the very item into the its intended target. This very act changes its structure even down to the molecular level, so that when you transfigure a bird into a cup, you are taking that bird and turning it into a cup on an atomic level.
What kinds of Transfiguration are there?
There are actually four different branches of Transfiguration: Transformation, Vanishment, Conjuration, and Untransfiguration. All four of these branches of transfiguration you work with if you wish to master this branch of magic, but you may not see all four during your course of study at Hogwarts.
What is Transformation?
Transformation is at its core turning one object into another. This is the most basic form of transfiguration. There are three different subcategories of transformation known as Human Transfiguration, Switching, and Trans-Species. Human transfiguration however is the most difficult form of Transformation.
What is Vanishment?
Vanishment is the act of taking an object and willing it out of existence. The Vanished item will simply cease to be, and instead you will have nothing. As such, this is the most difficult form of transfiguration you will probably encounter on your OWLs.
What is Conjuration?
Conjuration is the act of bringing things into existence. This is much harder to do than simply willing something to appear. This area of Transfiguration you will learn about in your NEWT-level class should you get that far.
What is Untransfiguration?
Untransfiguration is the act of reversing a transfiguration. The branch is considered both Transfiguration as well as a counter-spell. This branch is generally the very first one encountered when you are learning the subject of Transfiguration
