I whistled seeing her jerk herself away from the hole and followed it up with a chuckle. “Yeah, I’d say a little too close.” I looked at the black hole in the ground, wondering what the hell was that about. “A random hole in the ground, in the middle of the forest? That’s odd.” I had never come across one like that, and it didn’t seem to be that deep anyway. I looked around us, at the trees and their branches, looking for one that was sufficiently thin enough for me to effortlessly cut with my sword, but also long enough to be able to efficiently measure the hole. I cut the branch and then prodded the hole and then stabbed the snow right in front of the hole to warn any who travel by to be careful. “We wouldn’t want some traveler that is paying less attention than you to fall in, now would we?” I said teasing the young girl as we went on our way toward the site of the fire. “How much longer do you think we have to go to reach this place?” I both asked her and wondered out loud; it was kind of cold, and my lack of a jacket was making me shiver more and more as we went on.

"We're in the mountains," the girl commented, glancing back to the crevice. "There's probably caves all over the place. I wonder if it's worth exploring." She watched you for a moment as you propped up the stick, seeming pleased with the idea. Shaking her head to clear it then, she focused forward once more. "I'll just include it in my report when we get back." At your last question, though, her gaze swept around her, and she stopped briefly. "This is still the right direction. At our pace, we could probably travel a mile in maybe seventeen or so minutes, so it shouldn't be too much farther now." Another grin, and she started off again.
Just as she mentioned, the site wasn't much farther at all and, unfortunately, that meant that the two of you were subjected to the grisly sight left behind. The source of the smoke did appear to have been from a campfire, which was burnt out and cold by that point. Snow had been cleared from the ground to provide a dry spot, and a tent and a couple of bedrolls suggested people had tried to make camp. The bodies, though, suggested they didn't get very far. Yumiru stopped in her tracks the moment this came into sight, suddenly unsure of what to do. They had hoped it was just a group--either humans or a yokai patrol--passing through, but there was no such luck.
After a moment, she careful approached, swallowing bile. Thankfully the bodies weren't particularly rotted, due to the frigid temperatures. The first body, a girl who had tried to crawl away, bore a stab wound straight through her back. Farther in, a black substance still appeared to be liquid, despite the fact that the human blood had long since frozen or dried. It was that ooze that Yumiru's attention locked on. "Ichor." Her voice had taken on a much more serious tone than earlier. "They were attacked by Yokai. A patrol maybe. Or maybe some wild ones."
Hearing that it was only a handful of minutes left, Yumiru would hear no more questions from me, instead I followed silently taking in the environment around me and shaking as I walked behind her from the cold. As I walked absentmindedly, I did not notice that the girl stopped walking and bumped into her. I looked over to where she was looking upon and saw the bodies. I walked forth and saw the body of the girl first, examining the body of the dead girl, seeing the wound on her back. “We shouldn’t stay here for too long.” I said as I moved to look at the other bodies, followed by the blood of the fades. I took some steps, following the trail, but did not go too far from there before circling back. “Can you carry the girl? She seems the be the lighter of the three. It doesn’t feel right to leave them here, they should be buried back in the city, among their own kind, not to leave them here, in the snow. A pauper’s grave not a fate I’d like to give their bodies after what they must have endured while they lived… However, we could follow the trail, if you like.” If she decided to follow the trail, I would go over and follow the trail of blood which she called Ichor, if not, I would lean over one of the bodies and slung it across my shoulder and did the same with the other over my other shoulder. I expected Yumiru to protest, but I would have none of it as she would soon find out if she tried to protest.

Yumiru half shook herself out of her shock, standing up straight to face you. At the question of whether or not she could carry the girl, she looked confused. The deceased girl was probably a few inches taller than your companion, which meant she probably weighed more, despite Yumiru's chubbiness. "I can lift quite a bit, but there's no way I'd be able to carry her. Especially not all the way back to town." She looked back down at the body, and then at the other two--one male and one female--before her eyes drifted to the tent. "I don't think either of us has a shovel. We could bring them back using the tent canvas--I have some rope--or leave them here and have a larger group carry them back. I don't think they'll rot in the cold, and they're probably too frozen at this point to scavenge off of." Crossing her arms, she shifted her weight and moved slightly in the direct the black ooze splattered off in. She pointed at the snow. "There's at least three different sets of tracks, two sets that look like boots, and one barefoot. I think the barefoot one was the one injured."
She paused for a moment, but finally turned back to face you. "Those metal footprints suggest that we go back and get help if we want to track them down. But, if you feel confident to at least follow them and find out where they went, I'll follow you."
[This is technically the end of this mission. You get [200] exp for the mission,[100] exp for wanting to bury the bodies, and [100] for the altercation at the gates (since it was technically a win). You'll get the exp, upon reporting back, or you can continue and follow the tracks. You can also loot the camp if you want to see if there's anything of value.]
I stood and ponder on what we should do but the decision was a quick one truth be told. I turned back to the bodies and their camp to see if they had anything of value. After my quick look, I returned to Yuu with the tent in hand. “Here, start tying the tent up, I’ll move the bodies once you’re done. If you think its for the best for us to head back, then that’s what we’ll do. If the three of them couldn’t hold off the Yokai, I’m afraid we might not fare any better, although it doesn’t seem like they were fighters. It’s a pity.” I let my eyes linger on the girl on the ground before I turned to the bodies of her companions and brought them over to Yumira. If she had not finished by the time I returned, I set the bodies on the ground softly and helped her rig the rope and the tent to carry them. Once that was done I placed all three bodies on the makeshift triage; I grabbed it on one end and if she did so on the other, I began to make my way back to the village.

I could honestly say that I'd never been south of the town. I woke up in the outskirts of Tsukihara and traveled a ways down the mountain to where I bumped into Shea and Jean. From there we went back north a bit, to where I'd fought off the yokai and freed the sprites. We established the center of the town there and spread slowly down to a couple other gatherings of houses. But, again, because of Fiorzia, I'd avoided going out into the forest so this was all unfamiliar territory for me.
Thankfully, however, the paved path was mostly removed of growth over the last few months, and it was the path I needed to follow in order to find my target. The wolf appeared mostly at the edge of the forest, and only at night. The sun was already leaning toward evening anyway, so, hopefully, the wait wouldn't be too long. Assuming it actually came after me, because it seemed to mostly target people it thought were 'weak'.
The trees were thinning, meaning I was nearing the valley at the base of the mountain--around then I realize that after all this was said and done I would have to climb back up the mountain, which drew a sigh from me. Still, by that point the sun was beginning to set. I found a large boulder alongside the road to settle by to wait. I didn't want to light a fire because the creature was a beast, and flames tended to chase them away, but it was freezing. And... starting to snow. My gaze turned skyward as the flurry began, fat flakes falling to the ground around me. Fantastic.
Rubbing my hands together for warmth, I glanced at Fiorzia to make sure she was fine, and then closed my eyes, extending my senses to listen for danger.

Yumiru led the way silent back through the forest the same way she and Taiki had gone earlier. The snow was falling heavy at this point, which only resulted in the small girl picking up her pace more. Eventually they passed the marker to the crevice she'd almost fallen in and she carefully skirted around it this time, then kept going.
After jogging for a ways, the campsite finally came in view again. All that remained really, due to their visit earlier, was the firepit and the bloodstains, both of which were quickly becoming covered in snow. Yumiru slowed to a stop, looking around briefly, her breath puffing out in front of her from the cold. She pointed to the splashes of 'ichor' she has mentioned before, her finger following the trail north. "It looks like the yokai went that way."

I waited in the cold for around fifteen to twenty minutes, focusing all I could on signals around me. But the temperature was getting to the point of overwhelming. I was wearing enough to stop myself from getting hypothermia--I was more than familiar with the symptoms of it, even before winding up in the middle of the frozen land--but that didn't stop the chill of the accumulating snow from seeping into my bones. Finally I couldn't take sitting in one spot anymore and pushed myself up off the boulder. "This is a waste of time. I have an idea," I muttered quietly to Fiorzia. I envied her a bit for seeming to be immune to the cold.
I still had some of the supplies I'd gotten when I first woke up three months before, along with the strange items I'd accumulated since. I wanted to set up a trap. Setting the bag on the snow free boulder, I fished through it in search of a couple of particular items. In the meanwhile, though, my hand bumped into something warm I hadn't noticed before. Curious, I pulled the object out. It was an amulet. As had happened before, the moment I saw it, I somehow knew what it could do. The more important part for now was that it would keep me warm. That would have been handy at literally any point before then. Placing the thing around my neck, I felt instant satisfaction, and continued digging.
Realizing how much I needed to organize my stuff, I found what I needed: a ball of twine, and the sparkler I'd used on a fade three months before. There was enough twine to wrap around a small area, and I could rig it to fire off the sparkler if the trap was tripped. Not only would that startle it--I learned form the report that it was afraid of fire--but give away its presence as well. So I set about setting up my trap.
I wrapped the twine around several trees on either side of the road surrounding the boulder. Once done, I set up the sparkler facing inwards, wedged between a branch and the trunk of one of the trees. Then, I returned to Fiorzia, who had been quietly watching me the whole time. I grimaced slightly. "I need you as bait. You're a sprite, which is going to draw its attention, and if you pretend to be injured..."
She rolled her eyes, giving me an indignant huff. She feigned fainting, in a way that suggested a 'damsel-in-distress'.
I scowled at her. "That's no what I--" I started, but she waved me off. I sighed. "I won't let you get hurt." The words were all I needed to activate one of my Oaths. Transparent chains made of green chakra wrapped around my limbs and torso before fading away. However, I knew the invisible shield was there, and it would help stave off at least a couple of attacks.
Fiorzia smiled, genuinely and with full trust in me, as if to say 'I know'.
I took a step back, observing my surroundings briefly before retreating altogether, climbing up the tree with the sparkler in case it didn't work as planned. The snow cast enough light to see by, if barely, so hopefully even if my trap didn't work, I would still be able to see it. If anything, I still had another resource in my bag I could use to produce light if all else failed.
On the ground below, Fiorzia fell dramatically to the ground, crawling forward within the circle of the trap. If nothing else was tempting, then the presence of a sprite, and an 'injured' one at that, was certain to get the yokai's attention.

Silently I followed close behind Yumiru. It took us about fifteen minutes to reach the spot where we had found the bodies earlier. There was black blood on the ground, and in the coming and going it seemed to still be fresh. “I can lead the way from here.” I said looking at both Ussien and Yumiru. “Stay close behind, Yumiru, Ussien, you bring up the rear, make sure nothing sneaks up on us.” My fear was that Ussien would believe that in relegating him to the back, I diminished his worth, but in reality, I needed to make sure that Yumiru could be safely taken out of here if that was needed and I knew I could cause sufficient distraction to give him enough cover to do just that. Regardless of my motives, I would not explain myself unless he protested. Leaving the two katanas at my side alone, I decided to pull out the longsword I had taken from the wreckage, which I had strapped to my back once we had returned. It was heavy, much to heavy to use with one hand, but it was similar enough to my other swords where it would not feel too different to use. I placed both of my hands on the weapon’s handle and led the way down the path of the black blood, shifting my eyes back and forth and with my back slightly slouched ready for whatever would come my way.

The trap went off as planned, lighting up the small clearing with a bright flash and a bang so fast and close that it was almost disorienting after the silence. But it was enough light to let me see the massive creature, even if only briefly. I felt a pit of regret open up in my stomach. The thing was pitch black in color, the only real indicator between it and the darkness around it being a pair of glowing, white eyes. It must have been twice the size of a normal wolf, and, although my glance was brief, I could have swarmed its body swirled shadows. One the bright side--ignoring the pun--I would be able to see it easily against the snow once I got it exposed.
So, the second I saw the creature, and the direction it fled in, I formed the handseal needed for Lightning Manipulation. The bluish-white light it gave off should light up the area enough to let me see where it went. I threw the bolts forward in the direction I'd seen it just a moment before, aiming to hit it, or at least light it up. And then I leaped from the tree, my blade Zephyr in hand, the instant it appeared. Using my height to my advantage, I slammed the blade straight down on the wolf.
Regardless of whether or not the technique hit, I rebounded and jump back to avoid any attack that might immediately follow my assault. I held the the weapon loosely at my side, waiting for the wolf to attack again. In the meanwhile, I focused my chakra, letting it coalesce in a way that I hadn't done for technically centuries. My chakra created a second invisible layer around my skin as I entered one of the Hakemoto states: Zama no Benso, the State of Defense.
[Technique ranks and damage is listed in the spoiler below. To summarize, created light using lightning in order to drive the wolf from the shadows and, the moment it came into view, he attack it. Bounced backwards to put distance between them and centered himself.]

Gains a half rank [.5] increase to strength per two [2] ranks, starting at E, against defensive techniques. • Zama no Benso [State of Defense] While in this state, the Hakemoto gives off a thin aura of their corresponding chakra color. This aura is constantly flowing from their body, so long as they are conscious and aware of their surroundings. Although the user is unable to perform techniques above Rank B, any energy based Ninjutsu (such as Fire, Lightning, and Wind) Rank B and under that make contact with the aura is dispersed. This is not as useful against physical based Ninjutsu (such as Earth or Water), as they have a physical element to them, and instead only deplete the chakra from the technique, lowering their effective rank by two [2]. Additionally, Sight and Touch based Genjutsu Rank B and under are reduced in strength by one [1] rank, so long as the aura is active.
Usien would follow best he could. He didn't know these lands and didn't know these pathways or landmarkings. He had to totally rely on the two of them.
