Because even for a lot of straight couples, marriage isn't religious any more. And people get married nowadays for the legal benefits, e.g. if one partner dies it being certain that their stuff goes of their partner, for example (if they wish). It's not so much about religion any more anyways whee

This is what I don't understand. These selfish people are going on an on about how "It is a sacred union", and thier intent is to stop gays or lesbians from enjoying the benefits that come with marraige. They believe that marriage is only meant for a man and woman, and the benefits that come from it should only be for a hetrosexual couple.

The only reason that Marriage has benefits is because the government gives it to them. Correct me if I am wrong, but there is, in the USA a little something called "Seperation of Church and State" that is derived from a letter that Thomas Jefferson wrote.

If they took the benefits out of Marraige, then it would be completely a religion institution. As it stands it isn't. The benefits were given to marriage, because what often results is children.

But...not all Hetrosexuals couples have children, and they enjoy the benefits of marriage anyway.

So...what is the problem? Why can't Homosexuals enjoy marriage(and it's benefits) too?

Well it's legal where I live, and many more places in europe are coinsidering it... but there is a difference between maintaining the status quo, and not legalising gay marriage...

And specificially making it illegal.

Well, I'm really undecided. I have quite a few freinds of mine who are gay, so I'm not against their happiness. But being born,raised, and still continuing to be straight, I still think the idea of it is a bit well, weird.

I am for it, because equality leads the way to progress. With divorced straight parents, i put very little belief in the institution of marriage, and I also believe that society has no right to interfere with love.

Personally... I'm against marriage being governed by the ...erm... government in the first place.

It's such an intensely personal thing, the decision to join yourself to another person for the rest of your life... the gov't should not be allowed to say who can and cannot do it, and under what conditions.

If we're worried about taxation and rights... perhaps civil union registries, with some sort of proof of the union [secular or religious leader's signature, perhaps. multiple witnesses?].
