So the alternative is to grin and bear it, without showing the other person what it's like?

You can't tell someone that they need to back off your country, because that starts a political discussion, which is not what this is about.

The alternative is to prove them wrong with (as cheesy as it sounds) kindness.

Show them that they're wrong, and that the United States is in fact a place open to other cultures. The way to shut people up is going to be to prove that the U.S. is in fact a country of fairly nice people, and not a bunch of arrogant assholes as much of the world seems to think right now.

The kindness of one person, as nice as it can be, can't overturn societal expectations all at once.

It's better than that person acting like a total a*****e.
