SIC VIS PACEMPARA BELLVM Gerulf chuckled a bit. I've been called alot of things, but optimist is new. Opportunist on the other hand... "So, Frau Sheila, where is this job of yours? One of the shipping companies, perhaps?"

Sheila Locklear She had wondered how long it would take for that question. "How much do you remember form the night we met?" She asked him out flat. Sheila had talked to the officer that 'arrested' him. If he could remember their conversation then he would know what she was.

SIC VIS PACEMPARA BELLVM I remember that you tied me up, you naughty girl! Gerulf thought to himself. "Nicht very much. Ich remember shooting out your door unt zen passing out. Nicht much after that." He took a few bite of his food and had a sip of tea.

Sheila Locklear Good she thought "like I said I am a secretary I work for city hall and various other government buildings as a typist and file keeper, basically I am a librarian in a city where no one care for the records kept there." Sheila was using a common tactic of here. She did not lie she just did not tell the truth. All she had to do now is hope that Gerulf spoke the truth when he said that he did not remember much from that night.

SIC VIS PACEMPARA BELLVM "Ah... Das sounds like fun... If ever you feel like a change of career Ich could use a book keeper, unt Ich probably pay better." Gerulf added with a smile. I pay much better, but he vaguely remembers mention of relation to the police while he was tied up.

Sheila Locklear Sheila rubbed her chin. "well, that might be an option, I am a little sick of the rat race and politics." She thought but did not add and of course the duplicity. The fact that many of the officers were on the take and breaking the Volstead act flagrantly disgusted her. If you want to drink fine but don't degrade the uniform by wearing it. "But, you will find shop ownership turns over quickly here. Your place could get shot up, robbed or fire bombed if you don't pay your 'protection' or if you align yourself with the wrong people we might find you wearing a chain belt and cement shoes." Sheilas tone was one of warning. As she started to eat her meal. Although she had little doubt that powers that be had made themselves known to him.

SIC VIS PACEMPARA BELLVM Gerulf tried but could not help himself. He laughed. He laughed very hard for a good thirty seconds at least. The thought of someone coming in to threaten him was just hilarious to him. Mostly because of what he kept in his coat, under his desk, and in his basement. "Ich apologize. I vas just thinking how silly zat vould be..." He took a few more bites of his food and chuckled at the thought of the look on some mobsters face when he pulls a maxim on the poor b*****d.

Sheila Locklear Sheila was taken aback by his laughter. She wondered if someone had already tried or if perhaps he had done that to someone else to get his business. "Why is that funny?" Was all she could manage to ask. How could the idea be so ridiculous to him when it happened constantly. She could not count the number files she had typed up on the cases of bombings.

SIC VIS PACEMPARA BELLVM Gerulf couldn't come up with a good reason. He just couldn't. He was still chuckling intermittently. "Ich have no idea vy ist funny... Just ist." Was all he could come up with in between thoughts of what might happen if someone tried to burn his shop down or rob him.

Sheila Locklear Sheila was confused and a little upset. His laughter belied something more than he was saying. Did he already have allies with the gangsters? She tried to find out, after all she should know what she was next door to! "I think you will find they are a little harder to kill than my door was." Her words were mocking but she attempted to have it be playfully so. Perhaps this man was truly dangerous after all. Sheila began to wonder if he would bring more fun to her door....

SIC VIS PACEMPARA BELLVM Gerulf managed to pull the reins in. "Ich am sorry. Ich just find it amusing, the thought of a street thug trying to, how do you say, "shake down" a trained soldier."

Darth Ghranna Sheila Locklear Pouring herself more tea she shrugged. "you assume they are nothing but gutter snipes, but many of these boys are also veterans for the Great War. They came back wounded in body and soul to find nothing as they left to. No jobs waiting, things being what they were they turned to the only thing they had." Sheila said the sadness plain on her face. "The country they fought for let them fall on their faces when they came home. The war your comrades started destroyed so much more than anyone can know." She could feel herself starting to feel like she might cry. She had lost her brother, and her sweetheart in that war. Her brother fell in the Somme her fiance had fallen in Belleau Woods. It was not long ago that casualty lists were posted on notice boards. She remembered the crowds praying and hoping not to see their father, son, brother, husband or friends name on those lists.

SIC VIS PACEMPARA BELLVM Gerulf's face hardened quite sharply. "Forgive me, but Ich must correct you. It vas nicht mein countrymen das started der var. It vas der Serbs. Mein Fatherland vas dragged into ze conflict like everyone else. It vas just as Herr Von Bismarck had predicted. Some damned foolish thing in der Balkans indeed..." Sorrow now stained his face. "Now mein once proud country has fallen victim to great injustices unt suffers barking hunds."

Sheila Locklear "Yes, a Serb popped of the arch duke and his misses. Because he wanted to be free." Was all she said in response she remembered her father and mother reading the paper and listening to the radio during the start up of the war. She could remember how long her country tried to stay out of it, but in the end the young men of America went their death for no reason.

SIC VIS PACEMPARA BELLVM Gerulf sat eating his food in silence for a time. He had never stopped to consider the war before. He, after all, wasn't there. He looked at the woman. "Zere vas this man... Herman. He vas in mein unit. He vas caught in ze same net as me. He vent to another supply depot. One zat dealt in ze guns for ze army..." He took a few more sips of his tea and pours himself some more. "He vas court-martialed a second time. Zat time it vas for rerouting guns and selling zem." Gerulf blows on his tea."He vas arrested unt spent time in prison... I hear he vent back to his home in Munich. I vas just vondering vas ever became of him. Maybe he continued to be an arms dealer..." Gerulf had a wistful look on his face.
