Unwavering, Ambrosine narrowed her eyes at the stranger before her. He claimed he wanted to help them, but that wasn’t a reason to show up so late in the day… For the sake of the gods, it was almost dark! “Who are you? Why have you come so late in the day if you’re looking to help us?” She asked with her teeth grit. From behind her, Ambrosine felt her sister’s hand on her shoulder.
“Sister, calm down…” Alena whispered.
“Ah yes, my apologies for not introducing myself properly; My name is Boreas. I came straight here after getting a room for the night at the tavern in village. I only just moved here, and thought if I came tonight, then I could start work in the morning.” Slowly, he lowered one of his hands and took a step closer. Offering his hand to shake, he flashed another dazzling smile to the woman. “I mean you no harm. I could never hurt such beautiful women…” He waited to see if she would attack him or accept him.
After a long pause, Ambrosine lowered the pitchfork with a heavy sigh. From behind her, Alena giggled at the stranger’s flattery. “Fine, but keep your flattery to yourself, Boreas. You’ll need to talk to father for permission if you plan to help us. Follow us. We were just headed home anyways.” Putting the pitchform against a wall near the door of the barn, Ambrosine closed. “Goodnight Phobos.” She called to the horse once more, who seemed to have calmed down. After making sure the door was secure, the girls walked back to their house, the mysterious stranger bringing up the rear.
Alena seemed to take an interest in the stranger though, giving him a good look over before whispering to her sister. “He’s really handsome… I hope father lets him work. I’d love to see him topless and all sweaty.” She said with a giggle.
“For the sake of the Gods Alena, keep it in your pants.” Ambrosine commented, rolling her eyes and shaking her head a bit. “Here we are. Father and mother should be inside.” She said, motioning to the house just down a small hill. When the three made it to the home, Ambrosine walked in first. “Father, we’re home. And we have… company.” She said, glancing over her shoulder to Boreas as he entered the house.
“Company?” Called a male voice from the direction of the kitchen. Stepping out from around the corner, a rather tall man with grey hair eyed Boreas suspiciously. “And who is this man Ambrosine?”
“His name is Boreas. He only just moved to the village and claims that he can help us with the farm…” The woman said, taking off her coat and scarf to hang them on hooks near the door. “We brought him to ask you.”
“I see… Have a seat in one of the chairs by the fire Boreas. I’m sure you’re cold from walking all the way here so late in the day. I’ll be out in just a moment to speak with you.” He said, motioning towards the grand hearth on the other side of the room.
“Thank you, sir.” Boreas said, giving a small bow to the man.
“Girls, go get cleaned up for dinner while I speak to our guest.”
“Yes father.” Said both Alena and Ambrosine in unison as they headed upstairs.
Disappearing back into the kitchen for a moment, the male voice became muffled as he spoke to what one could assume was his wife. Boreas crossed the room to the fireplace and had a seat in one of the two chairs. While sitting there waiting for the man to return, he looked around the room. A few nick-nacks dotted the mantle here and there. Just above the fireplace, a deer head with a large rack hung, A hand knit blanket rested on the back of the other chair, and a simple wooden table rested between the two. On the floor, a large brown cow rug kept everything nice and cozy. A few minutes later, the man came back out from the kitchen and sat in the chair next to Boreas. “My name is Timon by the way.” He said, offering a hand to shake over the table between the chairs.
“It’s nice to meet you Timon.” Boreas said, taking the man’s hand firmly and shaking it.
“So what brings you to our little village, and more importantly, my farm?”
“I moved away from the city to escape from all the hustle and bustle. Not to mention all the crime as of late. I had visited this village in my youth, and I remembered it was so beautiful. I decided to move here because of that. As for your farm, I have experience growing crops with a farmer on the edge of the city, so when the inn keeper mentioned that your family was struggling, I thought I would come to offer help in hopes of finding a more permanent place to live.”
