tamcharles tamcharles Andrew's computer is still down... can't even boot. I'm uploading new sata drivers in hopes that it'll work. Opening it up was like walking into an attic. Dust everywhere as far as the eye can see. rolleyes *RANT ALERT!* Well this is not exactly how I wanted to spend my first night free from exams and such. confused But Andrew seriously needs help... rather his computer. Apparently the warranty had just expired on it but luckily it chose to die at the end of a semester so no real hit to school projects. Sadly it *seems* to be a failure with his SATA drive (300Gb of 1's and 0's are now all 0's). It has trouble booting, with an errie 50% chance in showing a black-screen moments after the XP splash-screen (yeah, seems like windows or an HD issue eh?) Well, it's one or both it seems. I can't even install windows or run a windows repair because XP won't recognize his SATA drive without a 3rd party driver (via Floppy) -- sadly the only Floppy drive I have available to me causes a FDC (Floppy Disc Controller) error and then crashes the system (yes I matched up the 1:1 pins). I even tried running a loop-back Linux Distro (Ubuntu) in hopes of being able to mount the dricves and salvage something at least -- but that was no go. It GPF'd (General Protection Fault) itself into a 0-level Kernal Panic (term init) and errors with the APIC it seems -- oh and bypassing it doesn't work either. *kicks Microsoft for not building SATA support into the XP CD* So now, as a last resort, I've taken an old IDE 5.25" 8GB Quantum HD and I'm installing XP on it. Hopefully from there I'll be able to jury-rig some kind of SATA access to get at the data. But it's not looking good... he's got data up the ying-yang (twice what my computer can store!) I'm hoping to get some kind of network connection running at least. Hopefully that'll solve some problems... I'm seriously hoping this last attempt works. If it works, I can just go out and pick up a new IDE 80Gb drive for cheap and install that as the boot drive. From there, he'll have his old drive as a 300Gb media drive... but for now it's wishful thinking. Okay... back to work... *groan* talk2hand confused It seems the fancy 300Gb SATA drive is the problem. Having disconnected it, we're getting somewhere. sweatdrop
Now my brother is running a Athlon 3200 @ 2.2ghz, 1Gb RAM DDR333, and 8GB HD... gonk
